Or herd animals for food for that matter. But primates do not make good pets and are, for the most part, too intelligent to stick in cages for their entire life simply to entertain humans.

To atone for this, in the next thread about SETI I'll make a joke about how aliens won't respond back to us because there's no intelligent life here. I should get modded up because we all read that Calvin and Hobbes cartoon, right?

I think it is the Left that is big on NASA cuts, as NASA is under mostly military spending. The problem is a failure to educate the public about the importance of these areas, If you leave it to average voter they will see NASA as a waste of tax payer money, because the government does nothing to really explain the importance to the general public. It was easy during the Cold war where we can go In Your Face USSR... But now our greatest enemies cannot even get a missile to go a few hundred miles, it seems less of a priority. Why does big business have control much greater then the government... It is easy, they know how to market to the average Joe.

Funny, I've always seen it as the "fiscal conservatives" want us to quit "wasting" money in space so instead things have to be billed under the military to get anything done. Find me a liberal who opposes NASA funding based off of it going to military purposes, cause I think you are full of shit.

It's funny, and sad, that you are both full of shit. The world is not "blue" or "red". "left" or "right". It's somewhere in between, or maybe outside of these stupid simplifications all together. The entire point of the US was for everyone to find some kind of common ground and work together from that starting point. Somehow this has been warped into splitting the country into polar halves and finding the most divisive issues on either side. Followed by screaming these views at each other until someone loses their voice. I can't say I recall much prior to the early 1970's, but the level of discourse is currently worse than I can remember it in my lifetime.

Wouldn't that be more equivalent to the Falkland Islands?

Except Russia did not initially invade Georgia. They defended South Ossetia after Georgia shelled the capitol, Tskhinvali, and invaded their territory. Only then did Russia push the Georgian troops back into Georgia. Tskhinvali was mostly reduced to rubble by the end of it.

This would be no different than if the US defended Taiwan from a Chinese attack. It's all dependent on your point of view as to the nations sovereignty. But regardless of your thoughts on that, Georgia should not have used artillery against civilian targets.

    Thank you Captain Obvious!

Yes, context matters and it is a juvenile response.

There is nothing juvenile about it, and judging by some of the responses regarding this topic, it's certainly not obvious. Frankly I find it pretty funny how politically correct so many on /. are about this. Especially considering how anti politically-correct most are regarding other matters.

The fact remains it has a strong negative connotation with the general public to the actual detriment of its adoption.

No more so than my reference to Lame, retard, master/slave. But good of you to completely sidestep anything you don't find convenient.

As for "heb" (alt. "heeb"), that is similar to Nip or Jap. All are simply single-syllable adaptions of ethnic designations. These are similar to "Brit" or "Yank". Not really offensive, unless you're looking for a reason to be offended. Unfortunately, lots of people seem to have that as a hobby.

Also, I think "Heeb" is a magazine dedicated to Jewish (Hebrew) culture in the New York/New Jersey area.

Plenty of people are appalled by the use of those "single-syllable adaptions". Actually surprisingly so. Most derogatory names can be traced back to a rational root that was not intended to be as such originally. It makes it no less offensive to some. You are correct about Heeb magazine. It also caused a pretty interesting divide among younger and older people in the Jewish community. Many older people found it to be very offensive.

Finally, regarding your wife, you probably already realize the use of potentially derogatory terms as self-reference is not only politically correct but a form of self-empowerment. (For reference, see "nigger" as used in popular black culture versus use by anyone else on the planet.)

No, it's not politically correct. Many still find those terms offensive no matter who uses them. Frankly I find it a little racist/sexist/whatever, that any group of people can use a term that everyone else cannot. It's either offensive or it's not. Anything else is just being childish.

Hmmm...I should have found a way to integrate usages of "hacker" in there somewhere. Oh, well. See the previous /. article on B&N pulling a copy of Linux Format for more of that than you can probably stomach.

For more of what than I can stomach?

So I suppose that they better change the name of this project too then. My wife has MS and walks with a crutch most of the time now. She often refers to herself as "a gimp". Of course the name of the program in question is not "a gimp", it's GIMP.

Is it offensive when I retard the timing on an engine? Isn't that entirely different from calling someone "a retard"? What about setting the Master or Slave for an IDE drive?

Context matters. But frankly I do not understand why people give so much power to these words when they are used as insults. They are only words, generally used by small people and used to make them feel somehow better about their own pathetic lives. Political correctness has run a muck in the US. Don't they teach "Stick and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me" in school anymore? I've been called a "cracka" and a "honky" before that and have had black friends refer to me as a "nigga" too. They are only words.

I didn't find out until I was in my twenties that my family, on my mothers side, left Germany in the late 30's because they were Jewish. They were so scared that they hid this from everyone, including their own family. I couldn't tell you how mayn people called me a "heb" or a "kike" after finding that out. These terms are only offensive if people let them be as such. And making them taboo when they are not even being used in a derogatory fashion is just stupid.

I've noticed that, that seems to be the natural evolution of television channels. Back when I was a teen MTV actually played music videos. And occasionally some interesting ones. Then they became more mainstream and played less and less interesting stuff. Eventually they made MTV2 and the original almost completely stopped playing music and went with reality shows. I have no idea what is on any of their channels now as it's probably been close to 20 years since I last watched it. The SciFi channel originally played noting but SciFi and fantasy type stuff. They showed Dr. Who, the original BSG, Dark Shadows and a bunch of the old movie serials. Now they play wrestling and other non-scifi crap. I earn an above average salary and I pay my accountant to do my taxes to ensure that I am able to claim all the deductions that I am entitled to. The difference is that I don't have a shell company set up in a tax haven paying me in some nefarious manner that is done to avoid yet another fee of some sort.

If you have a decent accountant, they would certainly suggest doing so it it were legal and to your benefit. I know people in Canada who incorporated themselves and have the company they work for pay their "company" and draw their salary from that for tax purposes. Do you think for one minute that people in the US would not do the same if the laws were the same and it would benefit them financially?

These stories wouldn't be stories if MS or Apple simply claimed all that they could on their tax statements, they are stories because of the absurd lengths that they go to. I am absolutely sure that /. and many websites try to claim all that they are entitled to, but I would be exceptionally surprised if the lengths that they went to included offshore tax havens, "Offices" set up in a state to claim a different regional address and the like.

I can't speak for /., but this is really common practice among large companies. The sad part is that the people who write the laws leave loopholes in the law that allow for things like this to be legal in the first place. Of course those companies probably paid for those loopholes in the form of "campaign donations" anyhow. Which is the truly discussing part. All of this outrage should be aimed at the elected officials who allow this kind of crap to happen in the first place.
