It does not matter if they would be just as monopolistic as MS. If they are, they should get the legal smackdown, too. Just because someone else might behave the same in the future is not a reason to ignore the behavior now.

Yeah, W2K is a lot stabler than previous MS products.
But the absolutely amazing thing is that they didn't make a stable product until AFTER they got monopoly status. They gained 90+ percent marketshare (desktop) selling CRAP. If that doesn't strongly hint to monopolistic biz practices, I don't know what does.

I bet it takes about 1/2 second after the first episode airs for some hardcore ST fans to start pointing out errors in the history, tho. But then it could be all explained away by rampant neutrino flux and uncoiled 11th dimension reflex sproingies.

Tada, no consciousness. Now, wait and eventually the alcohol will he purged, and they'll regain consciousness. Eureka!

  12. Re:Microsoft case must be abandoned on Bush And The Tech Nation · · Score: 1
    Tell the whole story, man.
    From the Miami-Herald website:

Before Vice President Al Gore conceded last month, his camp had expected to pick up as many as 600 votes from a Miami-Dade recount. The Post review showed 251 additional votes for Bush and 245 more for Gore. The review, concluded last week, also showed the vast majority of ballots rejected as undervotes -- ballots where no vote for president was recorded when counted by machine -- appeared, in fact, to cast no vote for president. About 7,600 undervotes had no mark at all on the presidential column or, in rare cases, included multiple votes. Most of the voters who did not indicate a vote for president did punch choices in other races. But at least 2,257 voters apparently poked at their ballot cards without properly inserting them in the machines. Of these miscast votes, 302 more would have gone for Gore than Bush, The Post review found. Even if those votes had been cast correctly, however, it would not have changed the outcome of a presidential election that turned on 537 votes for Bush in Florida.

In other words, had Dade not had ancient crappy voting equipment, this ONE COUNTY would have wiped out over half of Bush's lead in the WHOLE DAMN STATE.
Then there's the whole butterfly ballot thing, illegal "help" on ballet applications, blahblahblah. Face it, more people in Florida wanted Gore, but crappy equipment resulted in more votes for Bush.

During the election, you Bush supporters kept screaming about The Law, and ANY variation from The Law was evil and unacceptable, even if the intentions were good. (Except for ballot applications. Sure, it was illegal but they acted with the best of intentions). (And except for absentee ballots. Sure, the law required a postmark, but we should count the postmark-less ones because of GOOD INTENTIONS.) Other than that, we gotta FOLLOW THE LAW.
But during the recent confirmation hearings, the would-be Labor secretary BROKE THE LAW, but GOLLY GEE, she had GOOD INTENTIONS, didn't she?

    Hypocrites.

Yeah, dealing with USWest re:DSL is fucking HORRIBLE. I'd rather gouge my eyeballs out with rusty spoons than try calling USWest techsup. Once, after calling to fix a problem (which took about 2 weeks, btw, 'cause the first level tech people SUCK and the 2nd level people never call back) they somehow switched me to "random invoice" for LD, where I was paying 3 bucks a minute for long distance. And THAT took 3 months to fix because the people at USWest refused to believe that we didn't WANT to pay $3 a minute; they insisted that I had changed the service because THEY sure as hell couldn't have fucked it up. All this happened because of me trying to get techsup for my DSL service. Sheesh.

Then, after moving to Seattle and getting DSL setup here, they fucked up the ISP I had chosen, were late getting the service on, and decided to call me "custmr12387" or some such like that. Of course, after calling and bitching about that, now I can't call anywhere in the 712 area code. I can call anywhere ELSE, but can't call the 712 area code. WTF??

Teehee. We've made some press announcements so I don't think I'm breaking NDA by posting this stuff.

Anyway, I work at Tenzing, and here's some info to clear up some of the confusion. You may think some of Tenzing's ideas suck, but hey.

Email: You'll be able to use your current email account, you won't need a special tenzing account. There's some software that basically "dials up" to the onboard server; your laptop thinks it's connected to your ISP. It's pretty transparent, except you gotta use our SpecialNiftySoftware to start the whole process. Then the server just acts as a proxy between you and your ISPs actual mail servers. Mail gets collected, and every x minutes (set by the airline) all the mail is bundled, sent to the ground, and new mail for you gets sent up to the plane. So there is a delay.

Web: As noted, there's cached web content. However, it's not all just static crap. Partnerships with various places and search engines will allow searches, online orders, etc, in flight. Selected stuff will be updated during the flight, like stock quotes and maybe weather and whatever else our marketing dorks decide is necessary, but most updates will happen between flight legs.

Actual connectivity: None, yet. Some companies are working on actual broadband access during flights, but it's still experimental. We hope to get partnerships with these folx later. :)

Electronic device usage: Well, standard airline rules apply. The connection is thru the plane's phone lines to the seats, so there's no special new concerns. We've asked about using wireless, but the gov doesn't like that idea at the moment.

Quake games: Probably possible, but remember that, at least at first, you're limited to phone dialup speeds (since you connect thru the modem). Whether the games are doable or not depends on how the engineers setup the onboard boxes.

A piece of trivia: The servers are all running some OS that happens to be pretty popular around here. Muahah.
