    No, you're not just moving the pollution.

    A central power plant can/does have far better air scrubbing technology than your ICE. It can also run more efficiently, putting out less pollution for the same amount of power.

    Also, it _could_ (I'm not saying this is actually the case) be in a more remote location, where fewer people are as directly affected, even after the above benefits are still in place. (No, I am not meaning this to be a NIMBY argument, it's an "around fewer people in general" argument.)

    Vaguely similar to how compact fluorescent bulbs _reduced_ the amount of mercury in the environment, even though they themselves have a bit of mercury, because the reduced electricity used caused less mercury to be emitted at the power plants compared to the energy required to run incandescent lights.

    I actually wouldn't mind owning an electric, price is the primary issue right now.

    OK, you're admittedly talking about Teslas here, so you're likely looking for luxury and/or the very long range of Teslas.

    However, if price really is the primary issue, and you *don't* need the huge range or luxury, some of the lowest end electric cars are under $200/month (I think some significantly under) for lease price.

    I bought my smart electric, and after fed & state rebates, it was about $16500, including tax.

    So perhaps my TV won't get updates for long. But I wouldn't expect that from other devices either.

    But maybe you should. Yes, iOS devices eventually get dropped from new updates too.. So far, you have gotten at least a couple of years of updates for any device.

    Yes, so that's simple positive reinforcement, like a dog wagging its tail when you pet it, which people anthropomorphize into "happiness".

    (You and some of the other responses seem to think I'm claiming people aren't animals. I'm not.. I was simply pointing out that the summary talked about mimicry, and not what I'd call more sophisticated communication.)

    The summary at least says "imitate".

    Sure, making noise is some limited form of communication (a dog barking is 'telling' you something). But unless TFA goes into more actual detail, this isn't true inter-species communication, but mimicry. Is a parrot "communicating" with you when it says "Polly want a cracker?"

    It is facebook's pointless, unfair, side-effect prone, and essentially pinheaded "real name" policy that is the problem.

    Exactly how is it unfair? You realize Facebook is completely voluntary to use, right?

    1) They had a policy.
    2) Users are expected to follow that policy, and can choose not to use it if they disagree with the policy.
    3) They whine instead to get the completely reasonable policy changed instead.

    Also, as was noted by someone else, you're blaming the Solyndra mess all on Obama, and apparently the process was spread across multiple administrations.

    1. The government should stick to funding basic scientific research, and refrain from "picking winners" by investing in private businesses. It is far better to leave that to people investing THEIR OWN MONEY.

    GM, AIG?

    I obviously dislike that the U.S. lost money on Solydra, but it seems far "less bad" than those other investments.

    Which is one reason why the vast majority of time, I download to my iPad from my Tivo instead of stream, even when I'm at home... (The other reason is so I can skip commercials with far less latency.) This is mostly for watching shows while I'm walking on my treadmill -- use an iPad.

    Though it is a VERY VERY VERY small minority of shows, in the Xfinity app, I do see that _some_ shows are allowed to be downloaded.

    Then you're not a candidate for a pure electric car. (Though IMHO, you could do well with a hybrid and use relatively little gas overall.)

    since when is anyone's 'Wired' internet "Fast" let alone "Free"?

    It's at least free for "Up to 5 Mbps download & 1 Mbps upload speed" in Google Fiber areas. They list $300 construction fee, but I thought that was actually being waived.

    The copyright owner wants to set a price for their product. You disagree with that price, so either they lower their price to get more sales, or they forsake sales.

    That seems exactly like the free market. "Free market" doesn't mean you're allowed to steal stuff because you think it costs too much... Or, you can, but you have to be willing to pay the legal consequences.

    HAHAHAHAHA. How are different people supposed to watch different things at the same time (on a reasonably sized screen)?

    Heck, I "only" have one TV now, but just for me, I can imagine having a TV in my bedroom (which I have now), and getting a big TV for the living room.

    Do you mean new apps being added to _existing_ TVs? If so, how many years back do they support? i.e. for how many years do you get upgrades?

    There are plenty of other electric vehicles that aren't extremely expensive. Yes, people have "range anxiety", even though the lowest of them get twice the average daily round-trip commute.

    Property taxes are the worst kind of regressive tax because it taxes you on something that you paid taxes on to obtain.

    What do you mean? I didn't pay any sales tax when I bought my house, AFAIK. (If I did, I need to redo my income taxes and deduct that! It wasn't a new house, I've always wondered if they had to pay sales tax.)

    I think a lot of taxes should go down, but a property tax seems like one of the more REASONABLE taxes. Owning property means you live there (or at least have an interest there, e.g. rental property), so the taxes go for local needs.

    While it's not technically a tax, since it's "required" (at the moment I can only find city sites that say it's required, not a reference to an actual law), it is _effectively_ a tax.

    No matter what features Apple puts in their phone, you can bet that within a few months Android phones will have similar capabilities.

    Why can't I buy a car to my exact specifications direct from the manufacturer?

    While it wasn't directly from the manufacturer, the first new car I bought in 1998 _was_ to my exact specifications, and I basically ordered it over the Internet. Through an "auto broker", which I guess is YET another middle man, but I knew exactly what I'd have to pay, and it was a painless process.

    2) You are apparently unaware of Tesla's plans to keep building lower and lower priced cars to break into more affordable markets.

    Sure, you probably mean "mainstream big title games", but what you describe has been happening all along on phones.

    King, maker of Candy Crush Saga, reported $611 million in revenue last quarter (http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/08/12/us-kingdigital-results-idUSKBN0GC1VN20140812).

    While obviously most of that is for people who are paying, you can play Candy Crush Saga (and I presume the rest of their games) without paying one cent. I have never paid anything for Words with Friends, either. (Though admittedly, their ads are sometimes just long enough to make me consider it -- but that's a one time payment of $.99 when it goes down in price to that occasionally.)
