  1. How can you stop this? on IT Pro Admits Stealing 8.4M Consumer Records · · Score: 2, Insightful

Short of probing everyone's orifice as they leave the office. A company's biggest threat has always been inside corruption. The access given to employees is much more damaging than anything an outsider can do, and they can do it so much faster and without being detected. Unless you're auditing every single key stroke and action taken by every single employee and questioning the movement of every piece of data using some intelligent algorithms to pick up nefarious activity, it will be nearly impossible to stop this. You'd have to eliminate any type of "connection" between the employee and the data. It can be done, but it would be hella expensive.

  4. Re:linksys nslu2 on Best Home Network NAS · · Score: 1

I've got an NSLU2 as well with two 500GB WD drives attached. It's great to have that space for backing up my files etc... but to be honest, I've been pretty disappointed in the performance of it overall as far as I/O goes. Moving files back and forth is not exactly quick. I think I'd rather just setup a dedicated PC with a ton of drives in it.

I may have to look at slug'ing it with nslu2-linux to see if that can improve the performance.

    Cheers.

  7. Re:Cheapest, and possibly upgradeable on Sony Shifting PS3 Marketing to Focus on Blu-Ray · · Score: 1

The older Blu-ray players (Profile 1.0 ones) won't be able to run the new Profile 1.1 stuff (picture in picture, interactive audio commentary tracks etc...). They *should* be able to play the regular stuff - movie, extras etc... without issue. Then, there's Profile 2.0 after that which adds 'net connectivity. Seems like it was rushed to market. Now, HD DVD has had their act together from the start with a well established feature set, mandatory requirements etc... All HD DVD players already do PiP, 'net connectivity, Dolby TrueHD, persistent storage etc... Whether people care about that, who knows.

  9. Cheapest, and possibly upgradeable on Sony Shifting PS3 Marketing to Focus on Blu-Ray · · Score: 4, Interesting

Well, it is one of the cheapest Blu-ray players out there, and possibly one of the ONLY ones that is upgradeable to Profile 1.1. All other Profile 1.0 players are most likely not upgradeable. So, while it's not "hi-fi looking" it is not a bad buy if you want a Blu-ray player. You can always fall back on it as a gaming/media platform.

Because really, the difference between 720p and upscaled DVD is only just noticeable. Surely you jest. Either you have a 27" TV or your system is configured very poorly. The difference between a good up-convert and HD DVD/Blu-ray is quite significant, even on 720/768/788p systems.

  18. Re:Huh? on BBC's iPlayer's Prospects Looking Bleak · · Score: 4, Interesting

The uproar from the public is that this new offering goes against what the BBC stands for at it's very core. By choosing a closed, proprietary format they've narrowed the scope of who can take advantage of this offering. The linked article goes into some nice detail

    Here it is: http://defectivebydesign.org/blog/BBCcorrupted

The article goes as far as to suggest the BBC has been corrupted by Microsoft. I'm not sure it goes that far, but I think the BBC had all good intentions but failed on the delivery. I hope they won't abandon the effort but simply update it to ensure it's available cross-platform, DRM free using FOSS etc...

Would be a great showcase for FOSS if they did.
