Season 2 is massively improved - they've got rid of the whacky MTV camera angles, and (for the most part) the amateurish camera shake.. The storylines are more coherent and *gasp* that damned president has actually learned to act.
It's still trying too hard to mirror US politics for my taste, but I can see why the average slashdotter likes it so much, and there's been some episodes that are a bit 'meh.' but that's a vast improvement.
Depends on what your calling about.. if you gf is just about to break up with then an hour call is perfectly justified. Real Life > Work, and a good boss will realize that (luckily I've worked in good companies where they've realized that).
Their software and driver support is the reason I will not be buying another HP printer.
Their hardware is really nice.. does its job, easy to setup.
Their drivers? Forget it. The drivers for my printer won't install on Win2003 because it's a 'server OS' and HP don't support it. They won't install on XP 64bit because HP don't support it. If you do install on XP the driver is 100mb+ and has software in it that phones home every couple of minutes that *cannot be removed* without breaking the printer.
On top of that it works by modifying the hosts file, which means if the printer is DHCP it breaks every time the printer IP address changes & you have to manually edit it. For months I was reinstalling the driver every time it 'broke' until I found out what the problem was.
If they had decent software I'd buy HP with no issues, but their software is *so* bad I won't have it around any more.
You try convincing the average bloke on the street that a 100gb movie looks that much better and more different on his home television set than an 8gb dvd
In the US Sky HD is being demoed with dummy boxes and standard DVD players connected via SCART.
And people are still filling the forums with 'I saw a SkyHD demo today and it looked *awesome*'. They're quite pissed when people point out that no, you saw a standard DVD and were so convinced HD was going to look 'awesome' you tricked yourself into believing it.
I suspect over here it'll be driven mostly by that expectation... objectively a 26" TV at 8 feet (the average TV size and viewing distance) isn't going to show that much difference.
"Hacker impersonating Alice receives data from Bob and decrypts it into DATA."
That implies that the hacker can already decrypt the data. Unless you know what it is beforehand (eg. a special DVD that contains a known video sequence) you can't do that.
In fact once you've cracked it you can build a device that generates keys on the fly when it's powered up... it doesn't matter how many are revoked - such a device is a permanent HDCP crack.
I'll give it 6 months, then buy one from one of the many manufacturers in china.
CoreCodec do this... They found a clause in the GPL (clause 7) that states that if you don't have the patents/licenses to redistribute you can't. Since they are the only company with licenses they can release under GPL but nobody else can - single generation opensource, courtesy of the GPL.
I'm surprised others haven't exploited this hole.. it means you can take any GPL code, add your own licensed and/or code, and deny others redistribution rights. Sure, you have to give them the source, but it's useless to them.
Also when you *do* drink make sure you have a pint or two of water before going to sleep. And keep a jug of water next to your bed so if you wake up with a raging thirst at 5am you can drink and avoid the worst effects.
Haven't had a serious hangover since my student days. I've felt like shit some days but no headache, no sickness, etc.
The other best hangover cure is a bit more extreme - dialysis. When I was on that I could get absolute shitfaced the night before and be cured of the results completely by the wonders of modern technology..
We used to have a place selling it openly... totally illegal, but even though it was a stones throw from the police station they only staged a raid (and even then they tended to give some warning) when some reported decided to make an issue of it.
It was easier for them to leave it because:
1. It massively undercut the street dealers, only sold the one thing, and sold quality. 2. Even though it was open until late into the night, there was never once a violent incident in or around it.. in fact the crime rate fell around 20% in that area. 3. Several of the local police shopped there.
Eventually closed because the landlord got jittery and wanted them out. There's still one a few miles up the road though...
The biggest supermarket chain in the UK (Tesco) implmented Chip and pin, did the whole security bit.
*except* on their 'self service' tills. With these you just swipe your card and walk out - no pin *or* signature required.
So if you steal a card in the UK, you know where to buy your stuff from (and they sell a fair bit of high value stuff like TVs and Mobile Phones as well).
Precisely. Most spammers call their lists 'opt-in'. Most lists of scraped email addresses sold by spammers are 'opt-in'. Their responsible practices mean nothing unless they mandate proper confirmed opt in.
Even if it needed VMWare that would help OSX software development a lot.
Currently developing for OSX is a pain in the ass. I've got to ssh in, update the source tree on the mini, and run configure/make. Since the mini is about as fast as a 486 this is an overnight job.
VMWare on a dual core athlon is *way* faster - if I could get OSX onto that I could build in an hour probably (the tree builds native on the build machine in 20 minutes), allowing for a proper build/test cycle.
I could never get external firewire drives to work under OSX. Tried several of them.
They would run on Windows and Linux just fine.. but when I plugged them into OSX it just hung or went into an immediate blackscreen(!). I gave up on firewire under OSX and used USB eventually that was stable.
And that's with apple writing all the drivers in-house for their own hardware...
Sorry, won't wash. I've seen Windows fall over frequently on the *same* hardware that also runs Linux. Windows uses WHQL signed drivers - which means that Microsoft have said that the driver is OK.
If the driver is not OK, WHQL means nothing (ie. MS don't care about stability). If the driver is OK, and the hardware is OK (works under the other OS) that leaves only one option - that Windows isn't 100% perfect! Sorry fanboys, the truth hurts sometimes.
Personally I found season 1 unwatchable.

In North Korea...
Umm..
In Soviet Russia..
Um...
Damn.
Closeups of fully clothed genital regions? WTF?
It sounds like this senator needs counselling if he thinks that's porn.
That page is a virus. Avast caught it and aborted it luckily.
DS9 had a rolling plot - at least in its later series - that made it much better than the other ST.
I'm not sure a DS9 movie would work though - didn't they all leave the station at the last episode?
Think Smallville vs. Superman.
Damn why does Slashdot not have an 'edit' button FFS.
..still waiting...zzz... ..zzz... ..zzz.. 2 minutes and counting....
I meant in the UK...
stupid slashdot wait too...

Something wrong with your firefox.. mine did it in 42mb.
There was a bit of disk access but it basically handled it OK.

Nah. Holodeck. Why replicate one woman when you can have any number of virtual ones?

You voted for Bush - twice.
How is the military carrying out his commands not representative of you? You don't get off that easily.

Nice circular argument.
Windows is stable.
When it is unstable it's due to bad hardware.
Therefore Windows is stable.

Yeah.. that worked so well for OS/2, let's do it for the mac!
Oh, wait..
GPS are now in around 10% of cars in the UK and that's growing *really* fast.
