Once upon a time, IBM had a fairy godmother called the Personnel Department, that saw its duty to help employees fight the bureaucracy when it was wrong. In them days, they had a 4-year waiting list for their products. Then the big bad wolf (HR) arrived, and all that's left is blood and body parts.
I have always had an issue with the name "Human Resources" Turning people into a product to be mined, used up, then discarded, just like a strip mine. Resources.
When Watson starts to hire based on merit and some specific group of population will be chosen for most rewarding positions.
Where is popcorn when you need it?
I'll bring the Tequila. Anyone bringing lawn chairs?
The problem was that the system DID NOT engage in *politically-correct* bias. Having too many white, male, or Asian employees can get you investigated and punished by the government and demonized by the MSM and NGOs in our "free and open society".
This is not incorrect. Just as an example - imagine the uproar if this system was implemented and over time, it selected for a majority of the "wrong" sex?
There would have to be some statistically relevant data discarded, like sick leave, willingness to work extra hours, and in some places an extra couple weeks time off a year for menstrual leave. All of those things have an impact on productivity. At which point, it just becomes a toll that doesn't work.
I'd expect certain groups to oppose even implementing this system in the first place. Too dangerous for their 'isms.
HR is fucked up enough. Maybe with Watson writing the job deacriptions they will actually be accurate with proper spelling and grammar. Imagine that. Maybe Watson will actually be able to screen candidates that some flunky HR analyst that walked in to work hungover from a night of partying cannot do. HR seems to be the bullshit career for people who cannot make it in anything else.
The interesting part about this whole exercise is that what they are looking for is close to a unicorn. The person who is willing to put in long hours, with a flawless resume going back to pre-school, willing to work for very little, and the loyalty of a pit bull to it's master.
The algorithms will have to be scrutinized for gender/sex/skin pigmentation/ethnicity/religion promotion as well. This will be another popcorn and Tequila party concept.
tl;dr version - a lot of effort that will have HR departments chasing after a very select few, and a minefield for Social activists to complain about discrimination.
I avoid loud restaurants; I'm sure I'm not the only one. They may look nice, and maybe their looks attract more people than their loudness scares off; but, I do take note if a place is too loud and I don't return- so there is a downside to being loud, they do lose some customers... unless I'm just a unique freak.
Not unique at all. I'm functionally rather deaf, with loud tinnitus and a lot of holes in my hearing. One of the features of this kind of deafness is that if I'm sitting in a fairly quiet room, I can hear and understand most conversation. But in a loud place, I can't hear anything but noise. A weird thing - people with my kind of deafness process all sounds the same, whereas people with normal hearing have brains that can select what should be listened to.
Does this cost business? I think so. Who would want to go to say, Olive Garden for a business lunch or dinner? Especially when a fair number of the folks in leadership positions have hearing issues like mine. In our locale, we've found a nice cafe that manages to not sound like a foundry , and provide them with a lot of business.
Me hating the little bloodsuckers, it would seem that eliminating them all is a great idea. But it isn't.
You are elimiinating a food source for bats and hummingbirds, and other critters that rely on skeeters for food.
Elimination should be on a local level only.
As 60 yr old, I'm pretty much 100% in agreement with your post. The one thing I think our generation was truly guilty of was creating a generation of kids who got participation awards instead of teaching them to compete. We now have "helicopter parents" who can't let their kids be kids and learn to take care of themselves.
Well stated. We underwent a social experiment, with children that we tried to protect form any and all adversity.
As it turns out - that doesn't work. We created the snowflakes. Adults in body only. I watched a couple Youtube videos, where young ladies punched men. Then the men punched back. The shock on these women's faces was amazing - they were surprised that getting punched in the face hurts. Men are not exempt from not being able to handle adversity.
This is not advocating punching people, I was raised that if a woman hits you, you walk away. The point is that we have overprotected children to the extent that they are surprised and harmed by anything that doesn't go their way.
Helmets for recess? https://letgrow.org/day-care-t...
And here is the final protip for the millenials. You can hate the Boomers. You can blame every single problem that ever happens to you on them. You can lament your permanent victimhood.
But the boomers will soon be gone, and you will be left with nothing but someone to blame. Make certain you let people know how having someone to blame for your failure helps you not be a failure.
It's misleading to say that Germany employed it until 1945. That implies that it was continuously employed in Germany from time immemorial until 1945
Nonsense. That would mean that it was misleading to say that the US employed it until the Emancipation proclamation. The US had only existed for a little under a hundred years. The metric isn't time immemorial, it is that an existing government employed it.
The national Socialists employed it until they were stopped. The US employed it until the north took first place in the US Civil War. That is all.
First, let's clear the skies. We got a helluva smog problem right now.
That's the Chemtrails. Hellary is behind this - she's put emasculation chemicals in the jet fuel. Not to mention the mind control poisons in the fire retardant from the firefighting planes. They don't call it retardant for nothing.
I should really stop writing that stuff - I bet I've inadvertently launched a dozen or more conspiracy theories.
And finally, the most recent user of slavery, Germany who employed it until 1945, a mere 73 years ago. Presumably they would have continued to use slave labor except that the British, the Russians, and the Americans stopped them.
+
By that logic, American jails are also slave labor camps. No, the 5 cents per hour they can only spend in the prison store doesn't count.
Your assignement, if you care to accept it, is to compare how American prisons are the equivalent of the Mauthausen concentration camp.
Boomers are idiots who don't know and thus don't care how idiotic they've become. The sooner their short sighted idiocy can be rendered incapable of influencing governmental regulatory policy regarding the safety and welfare of the country they are destroying, the better.
This is true in many different areas, and I speak as a Boomer.
I can speak as a late boomer.
Good luck millennials and others - your time in the seat of blame will arrive sooner than you think. And don't think it won't happen.
It's pretty interesting stuff. I've worked hard my whole life, saved a lot of money, invested wisely, and don't owe anyone a penny. Yet I am the problem.
But here's the real fun part - there were boomers in my day who other than separated by time sounded just like the laments of millennials now - the only difference was that we were worried about getting drafted and shot up, and no one was going to retire and no point saving because inflation was going to render our money worthless.
And the whiners in my day's hate and blame target? "The Greatest Generation".
As my old man told me when I was 16... "Hurry up and move out of the house while you still know everything".
I made no claims to putting a comprehensive list together. Point is, mention slavery, and everyone points a finger at the 'Murricans. When in fact, a lot of presumed more civilized nations practiced slavery much longer than we did.
And a huge difference, exemplified by that willingness to only blame us.
We own it. Time for our betters to own up to their sins.
We do support Google. That is the thing you don't get. We all support Google. We will continue to support Google while we protect ourselves from very VERY specific illegal activities they conduct. The response to that is not to dump Google. If you think it is then you have fundamentally failed to understand my entire post.
So let me get this straight - you just wrote that you support criminals. Seriously - you call my writing retarded?
Very specifically, I do now understand some aspercts of Europe that explains their very interesting history.
I belive that we have taken this about as far as I care to, because you support criminals, you are a criminal.
Why? Yandex aren't doing anti-competitive practices pushing their products through their monopoly (at least not in countries where antitrust laws exist). And there's also no reason not to use Google search.
I missed that part. Using Yandex instead of Google should be the moral choice for the EU. If you use Google, you support Google.
I don't support Google. I have all of their scripts blocked on all my machines. I use DDG as a search engine. In every possible way, I avoid using Google.
There is some disconnect here, perhaps some cultural divide, where to me, avoiding the poison is the best way to get rid of the poison. Wheras there are some others who believe that continuing to drink the poison while yelling at the person poisoning you to stop poisoning you is somehow smarter.
So yeah, if I was a Internet based company in the EU, I would be setting up for a EU centric search engine provider. Might take a few years, but seems that the stage is set for a little competition, and with the sort of control the Europeans want, it can be molded into something the believe is correct.
And yet, I'm certain that any reply you send will have the same low-key insults about how stupid I am. Perhaps I understand a bit more about economics than you would give credit for. Whatever the case, the ability to control - which at heart is what the EU is demanding - is a lot easier when the entity you demand control over is within your borders.
Here, we part company. The Tax changes are responsible for GDP growth and great unemployment numbers we have enjoyed over the last few months. The tax "cuts" have predictably caused in increase in tax revenue due to the increase in economic activity, upping employment, raising household incomes and otherwise causing the "poor" to have more money as more of them have jobs who where unemployed and raising the pay of those who already where working.
Sorry but this is absolute horseshit. You're presenting this as an obvious fact but there's absolutely no evidence that these tax changes had any positive impact on what you're claiming. I had some more comments typed up to your other points, but come on dude.
Of course they didn't have any real impact yet. Real impact doesn't happen that quickly.
More likely the effects of the last couple years were just the O'Blama era running down.
And yet, deficits are projected to be over a trillion next year...and the next...and the next...I guess short term sugar highs are enough to justify the tax cuts in your book.
This is not dissimilar to the Republicans "emergency Appropriations" used to fuel the Gulf Wars in the early oughts. Push paying the piper ahead, and hope the other party is in power so you can blame them.
Enter 2007 and 2008.
And such foolery to claim that the Republican majority instantly fixed the economy. Because the great recession inherited by O'Blama the moment he was sworn in was not his fault, no more the better economy Trump inherited was his doing.
And we are starting to see the start of the Republican results two years in - now we can start judging, Here's a shot across the bow:
General Motors is closing plants in Detroit, Ohio, Ontario and Maryland, and eliminating 14,700 jobs, 8,100 of those white collar.
In a move certain to annoy some Trump loyalists, GM is cutting 25 percent of the Executive staff. Sauce: https://www.10news.com/home/ho...
This is the government that enslaved million of black Africans for profit.
Don't kid yourself. England and its colonies had slavery too. Just because they ended it fifty years earlier doesn't make them any less guilty.
It means they have 50 years less guilt.
.
And there are some additions to that list of dubious honor:
Portugal - slavery was legal until 1869
The French Empire - abolished in 1848
Spain - 1873 in Puerto Rico, and 1886 in Cuba
Netherlands - ended 1873
And finally, the most recent user of slavery, Germany who employed it until 1945, a mere 73 years ago. Presumably they would have continued to use slave labor except that the British, the Russians, and the Americans stopped them.
Slavery is a horrifying practice, a cruel practice, and an abomination. But there aren't all that many nations out there with clean hands. Jeebuz had something to say about those without sin being allowed to cast the first stone.
I may well be a happy Linux user, and every time I see reports like this, I am glad that I switched 2 years or something ago. That said. WTF is MS doing? This is so unacceptable for those that rely heavy on Windows for actual work. I don't care how much you game, as these issues are of no concern. Yet... If you make a living, using Windows?? WTF Micro-Snot !!
I'm constantly astounded by how much abuse by Microsoft, people (and corporations) will put up with.
Practical alternatives are missing. If orgs see the alternatives such as Mac or Linux work
I hear this all of the time. Wrong. The buy in, the job security for IT departments - imagine what would happen if we ran Macs.
I can tell you what would happen. We had an army of PC support people, probably 1 for every ten Windows machines. I supported Macs, probably a hundred or more, and did it only on a part time basis.
The Windows centric IT departments don't want to lose their people, and there ya go.
There is simply no software that can be made for Windows that cannot be made for Mac or Linux. And as foro the biggest claim, the incredible expense of the Macs - try dividing the cost of the extra support personel into those thrifty Windows PC's
