  1. So you are saying taht the exact same numbers of malware and virus exist for Linux and PC, and that Windows is just as secure?

I don't see that statement in QPs comment.

So... you like putting words in other peoples mouths to make a point?

I like cutting to the chase. Trying to parse his comment wasn't easy, bit in the end, I just decided that since he was expounding something superior abut Windows over Linux with the cryptic at least they can be fixed comment - I just took a stab at what he was trying to say. Don't like it? sue me.

Silly AC - this is not a tit for tat, where you point out a Linux problem as if it were teh equal of a Windows problem. Sorry, but we are talking about a body of work, and Windows is lapping the field several timas regarding it's abysmal security.

Is it not true that Linux is used on many millions of IoT and network devices? Is it not true that oftentimes the makers of these devices do not provide any meaningful support after the release of the devices? Is it not true that over and over again such devices are found to have fixed passwords, gaping security holes ore are using libraries with known security problems?

And trying to conflate the issues of IOT with a Linux install on a PC is disingenuous. Having a fixed password and lack of support or updates is a manufacturer's issue, not a problem with Linux My Linux installs get more updates than My MacOS machines, which in turn get a few more than my Windows machines. My Samsung Android tablet has maybe 1 per year, though it's tapering off. And finally anyone purchasing and using an IOT device is purchasing their own problems willingly.

That doesn't make the problems with Windows any better, but it shows that the Linux world has it's own set of problems. Neither party has any right to look down upon the other one.

All operating systems have issues. I use Windows, MacOS and various flavors of Linux. Linux requires more and different knowledge (though I use that knowledge on Mac as well) MacOS has nuc'ed perfectly good working software, but really, the champ is Windows, especially Windows 10, with it's horrid update process. Hates some drivers, decides it knows better, then uninstalls it, and installs a driver that Microsoft thinks is better. Breaks software installs. Brings back the BSOD. Every update is an adventure, will the computer and software work when it reboots? If it reboots. What settings did it change? I even tried going Wi-Fi and don't download updates on a metered connection to try to stop Microsoft sexually assaulting a laptop. A couple weeks later, it downloaded an update anyhow. Plus, if you click on that metered connection, it will shut off functions that shouldn't have anything to do with metered connections, like Bluetooth connectivity..I tried to install a Bluetooth speaker to that machine, and it wouldn't unless I turned the metered connection update back on.

In ascending order of support needed:

MacOS - maybe 2 percent Linux - 10 percent and dropping after people get the learning curve and used to terminal.

    Windows - everything else.

Cool story Bro. China kinda took that stuff to recycle in the first place. There were horror stories about computer recycling, With computer reccling being a cottage industry - backyard burning the PVC insulation off wires to get the copper, some horrifying process to get the gold off of the contacts, and in the end the boards were burnt as well. https://www.theguardian.com/li... . There was some money to be made, so they made it. As likely as not, the real reason that China isn't taking plastic any more is because their earlier recycling efforts was so incredibly toxic and unregulated that the Chinese Government, which has been working at cleaning up opllution in the past few years, hasn't found a good way to do it yet, and besides, they have a huge problem with their own plastic waste without adding more waste to it..

But the idea that this is first worlders whining? It makes for a problem when someone in any process stream drops out of it. Just like if a electronic device is all ready to go to build, and one of the component manufacturers stops producing a needed component. It takes a while to find a new solution, and being annnoyed about it is not against the law.

By getting rid of single stream recycling, as well as deposits on beverage containers.

The primary recycling organization in British Columbia, Canada, and still sell this stuff to China. Why? Because the level of contamination is within their standards.

This is achieved through a couple of mechanisms:

First, we do not have single stream recycling. People are forced to sort their plastic containers from their glass from their paper from their organics. It's easy, wherever you are in public that has recycling bins, there's always a bin for each.

Secondly, there are deposits on all non-essential beverage containers. Pretty much everything other than milk has a deposit ranging from $0.05 for a 355ml pop can to $0.20 for 2L pop bottles. There's also an environmental tax that's collected at the time of sale, ranging between $0.01 for the can to $0.16 for a gable-top juice carton. This also extends to the stupidity that is bottled water, and so forth, and represents an enormous portion of the plastic waste.

Thirdly, beer bottles are collected, washed, and refilled. Breweries big and small can all sign up for the program, and get clean Industry Standard Bottles delivered to them. They paste on their labels, fill, and cap with custom twist-off caps, and sell to the consumer. On average, a bottle will make it through the system 10 times before it breaks or is lost.

So yeah, it can be done, people just need to get off their asses and do it.

We have the same recycle thing here in the murricans wasteland, other than the deposits. But the metal gets mostly recycled anyway. A truck comes around once a week, and if you don't have things separated correctly it won't pick it up. It's towing a trailer with around ten different bins. Plastic - different types, brown glass green glass clear glass Newspapers magazines - small cardboard.

There are types of plastic that need segregated - but the local conservancy has bins for that.

But all in all, how far do we go to get these lazy bastards off their asses? I'm being sarcastic. There are a lot of ways to sort different plastics. Density comes to mind. Used in mineral separation all the time. In addition, cutting the number of different types used down might help as well. Perhaps the Chinese government might consider some research into sorting and the technology involved - because they are the largest source of plastic pollution. Might help them clean up the disaster they are creating.

  20. Expecting a machine that runs a specific version of Windows to still be running 20 years later is extremely foolish. If the company that sold you the machine doesn't have access to the source code for everything on that machine then you are playing with fire. Maybe you'll get lucky but only a fool depends on luck with big capital purchases.

We of course know that now. And this Microsoft issue is part of what illustrate it. And that is the problem. Did Microsoft tell them they were foolish? Probably not. Even without dishonesty, they'll be happy to make the sale. Remember all of the applications businesses were developing for their intranet that were developed for Internet Exploder 6? A lotta time, and a lotta money to update all of those apps. Foolish? Especially in the glare of 20/20 hindsight. I don't know what the present day situation is, but only a few years ago, there were significant numbers of companies still using IE 6. It is a lot harder to convince the suits that everything has to be re-written every 3 years when the old system still works.

So for that big capital equipment purchase that is expected to last 50 years being controlled by a computer with a software system that you are foolish if you expect it to last ten? Sounds like the actual solution is not a Microsoft product.

I can see it now..... walking into the bosses office for a meeting with him and the head accountant....

You: "We have to buy all new computers and rewrite the software to control our forges."

Boss: Oh my, was there some sort of mass failure - a power surge or something?"

You: "Oh no, nothing like that".

Boss: "Well what made them stop working?"

You: " Oh, they are working perfectly!"

Boss: "but you want us to replace everything and re-write software for perfectly functioning equipment?"

Head accountant: "No we won't. Meeting's over!"

It's not unreasonable but it might be ill advised.

And it makes for a real interesting conversation for what you will use for your next generation machinery controllers.

It's easy for us to rant on Slashdot about how stupid these companies who might be expecting say the PC controlling a huge forge to be supported for the length of time it was stated to be supported. Fr the PC jockey's view, 5 years is ancient.

But - and here's the kicker - when the manufacturer of that 100 million dollar forge is trying to make the sale - the buyer is going to ask about what operating system controls the forge. And if Microsoft OS - how will they know how long Microsoft will provide support will be asked. Finally - what happens if Microsoft drops support. Two years early? 5 years early?

The number of devices that are left hanging are small. But odds are they are big and expensive. And the takaways are two:

Microsoft has decided they don't have to offer support for as long as they say they do.

You cannot trust what they say.

This lack of veracity would have a rather large impact on purchasing decisions.

  22. Large corporations that are still demanding support for 20-year old systems are not relying on a reasonable support cycle. They're acting like a bunch of whiny cheap-asses who would be willing to spend FAR more money fighting fine-print support bullshit in court than they would simply upgrading their hardware.

I can't disagree, but you are missing the forest for the trees.

Whether you think they are acting like crybabies, or someone else is pissed that support is being dropped a couple years early, the act is what it is.

It simply shows that putting trust in Microsoft is one of the acts of stupidity you can add your your rant:

Capital equipment that can be controlled by computer often lasts for decades.

The computers controlling it can also run for decades

The operating system for those computers won't be supported for the length of time the manufacturer of the OS said it would.

This might have an impact on the decision for the next controllers purchased.

If you have a bit of machinery that is expected to last 50 years, you might look at a PC running Windows 10 as a controller to be a bad decision, and build a custom controller that will be expected to last as long as the machinery.
