Where is the story here ?
Its not satire, or free speech... it was malicious and designed to humiliate
and hurt the victim. Case closed.
More interesting to me is what information/tools were used to track the
creation of the fake Facebook pages back to the perpetrator... (or...duh..did
he use his own email address to set the account up?)
No-ones standing up for anything here.. Yahoo are simply holding out for a better price, and thats all. No backbones, no standing on principles, ethics, morals, fighting the good fight or any of that crap.
For the right price Yahoo is going, going, gone. Whether thats good for YAHOO! or its employees is irrelevant. Whether thats good for Microsoft is irrelevant. MS has decided they want Yahoo...now they need to decide how badly... From MS perspective its strategic, from Yahoo's perspective, its about cash - as are all deals - and nothing more.
For my money though... Google is now a verb in the dictionary... Yahoo should take the money
And, frankly, what's so wrong about having a specific method of payment used throughout a website?
..the same thing that wrong with Microsoft bundling Internet Explorer with every copy of Windows. Its leveraging one monopoly to increase market share and decrease competition in another market.
Its anti-competitive and would probably fall foul of antitrust laws in many countries as well.
They bought Paypal with the specific intention of limiting the payment options of their existing user base and give them (eBay) complete control over ALL transactions.
Its not just limiting buyers and sellers to a particular payment method, its restricting them to ONE COMPANY.
Its the equivalent of one chain owning 90% of all supermarkets and refusing to take cash or credit, instead forcing you to buy groceries with a credit card OWNED by the supermarket chain.
Sure, you can refuse the 45% interest rate and shop somewhere else, but the nearest one not owned by the chain is 60km away. But theres a catch: because the monopoly chain will blacklist any supplier who sells to an independent supermarket, even when you get there, you may be disappointed with whats on offer. (Forgot to mention the chain also owns all of the petrol/gas stations between you and the independent supermarket and, you guessed it, you need a store OWNED CC to buy fuel) Best of luck with that.
Personally, I honestly can't believe the eBay management-drones thought this had any chance in hell of getting up ? Even if it did get through...they're lucky it got knocked on the head. eBay would have been dead in the water within 2 years of this being implemented. They may be the defacto standard, but they don't own the concept of an online marketplace.
If eBay had their own internal payment system identical in every way to PayPal, would there be as much fervor?
If they were deliberately switching off all pre-existing and established forms of payment at the same time for $$$PROFIT$$$ ? YES.
Yep. The slashdot summary was like listening to the techno-babble between Abby and McGee on NCIS... lots of cool words strung together, but I didn't understand any of it...
All I got from TFA was that she got spammed, and if you dont use McAfee products, you too will end up with 10,000 spam messages a month and your PC will "slow down".
TFA was a puff piece with absolutely no detail to speak of.
Title should have read - "Spammed for a month for a free PC"
Wish I had some mod points... This is not offtopic !
Its a fair point... we've just had two major natural disasters in the world with many, hundreds of thousands of people suffering, and its a fair argument that the original poster may not even have considered.
The OP has some money to donate, and some concerns about where itd be best put to good use. Pointing out that a software project, no matter how worthy, might not be the only consideration at this point in time is hardly hijacking the debate.
The f*sking interface argument again

Blender 2.46 Released

..this is what will eventually KILL blender. Any time Blender is mentioned mainstream it quickly turns into a crap-fest argument about the interface - and any and all other discussion topics disappear into dust.
There are two camps: 1. People who want 3DS MAX/Maya/Lighwave for FREE and Blender happens to be the closest thing... so take that an MAKE IT MAYA.
2. People who have been using Blender for many, many years and have come to either appreciate or at least get used to the speed that the interface allows... ONCE YOU KNOW IT!
Given that the interface HASNT changed much in all this time... perhaps its time for the GIVE ME MAYA FOR FREE crowd to go and write their own FOSS 3D app.
PS. For all those Blenderheads out there who haven't already seen it... check out www.indigorenderer.com for photorealism.
The slashdot moderation system needs an overhaul. Just because someone puts forward an opinion other than the prevailing viewpoint - doesnt mean that the post is automatically flamebait.
And no, even though it will be marked as such, this is NOT offtopic - as I'm trying to raise the visibility of the parent due to poor moderation/tacit censorship of a comment linked to this story.
Its the equivalent of sueing a bus company because a passenger bought a ripped DVD at a flea market before getting on board.
Its the equivalent of strip searching everyone leaving a flea market, just in case they bought a ripped DVD.
I'm sick of the MAFIAA/Patent Trolls etc. being able to circumvent existing laws that alrteady exist to prevent real world abuses simply because of two words "via computer".
Email vs snail mail Snooping Traffic vs Phone wiretapping Patented Algorithm vs Real Wold Business Practice
Damn it! I thought we had a secret base on the dark side of the moon to handle THIS VERY THING !?!?!? You mean we don't ? Seriously ?? Have we actually confirmed that ??
Thats the problem with secrets and myths these days...half of them turn out to be bogus...and the other half are SO secret that literally NOONE knows about them any more.
If everyone who knows we have a secret base on the dark side of the moon is dead..then its kinda useless as a defense mechanism isnt it !
For godsakes people! Its a catch-22, I know, but the only way to keep a secret is to tell others about it.
It just seem so unlikely. Is there any proven examples of this happening, or is it just paranoia, and maybe totally unrelated pilot errors
See my other post in this thread... but, this isnt just about planes - I've had this done to me while driving my car (at speed) with a passenger in a car travelling beside me pointing a laser in my face to the point where I nearly drove my family through a red light at a major intersection.
Some prick had a laser pointer and decided watching me kill my family would be something cool to see. The only thing missing was the video cam on his mobile so he and his mates could chuck it on youtube.
SO WHAT if the chance of actually permanently blinding a pilot is slim - if you cant prevent it from happening or stop people at the time they do it, then you have to remove the tools - whats your BRIGHT IDEA to stop the bastards among us using them against other people ?
I really hate idiots who play with laser pointers.
I'm with you. I'm an Aussie and I'm fine with the law.
Recent personal experience: I was the first to pull up to a stop light on a 4-lane road, with my wife beside me and my two year old daughter in the back seat. As I put my foot on the brake approaching the intersection I suddenly suffered a complete loss of vision (As IN - WHAT THE F..K??? I CANT SEE. MY EYES? WTF IS WRONG WITH MY EYES!?!?). In the confusion I somehow managed to come to my senses enough to lock the brakes before going through the intersection.
As my eyesight returned and I sat there trying to work out what just happened, I turned to see a 15-16 year old sitting in a car beside me with his mates, laughing their arses off.
I nearly wiped out my whole family - and they thought it was the funniest thing in the world.
The problem was - at the time I had NO IDEA what was happening to me - I didnt know it was a laser pointer until afterwards. At a critical moment I blinked and my eyes didnt work - it FREAKED me out, and this wasnt even one of the lasers that they're banning.
BTW - Yes I got out of the car..and YES, I still have the laser pointer the kid used.
Because objecting to the idea that ANY story on Slashdot emanating from Australia MUST automatically boil down to two basic comments - "what do you expect from a bunch of crims" and "what do expect when you give up your guns" - barring any further discussion on the topic at hand and turning the rest of it into a simple flamewar.
Of course I'm marked as a Troll. Safety in numbers as I said. Cheap shot at Australians +5 Funny. Retaliatory cheap shot at Americans -1 Troll. Thanks for making my point.
Such a fine line between +5 Funny and -1 Flamebait.
To me this is simply insulting. Guess it comes down to which side of the fence you sit on and safetly in numbers. Since the gun control debate has already surfaced as the supposed reason Australians are facing the prospect of unrestricted government wire tapping, I think I'll take my criminal ancestry, sit back on my Aussie arse...cop the insult on the chin, turn the TV on to COPS or 48 Hours and watch some pro-gun Americans shoot each other.
OK.. everyone take collective breath... and

Not only that, but Google chose to use the pictures - not the drivers. There are two issues here - the driver is tresspassing, but as pointed out, may not have been able to turn around, so this is arguable in any case (ie. no intent) - but its the publishing of the photos on the net that is the main issue - and THAT is wholely the responsibility of of Google's quality control.
Google may have issues with whoever they contracted to do the driving, but thats between Google and the contractors - and has nothing to do with the owners of the property.
1/.00000733333 is 1 in 136,364. Still pretty good odds to me. Sorry to burst your bubble but, from your own figures: 22000 deaths / 300 million people is.00007333
which is 1 in 13,636.
US firearm death rate roughly 1 in 10,000.
Australian firearm death rate roughly 1 in 100,000
You are 10 times more likely to get shot in the US than you are in Australia.
Congratulations, you gave up some of your freedom for safety. Why are you proud of that? What kind of assertion is this ?
What makes you any "safer" than me because you have a gun and the other guy has a gun.
In the society I live in, guns are rare. The guy picking a fight at the nightglub more than likely
ISNT armed. The neighbors in my street arent armed and kids arent taking guns to school.
Yes they still exist, and yes people still die from firearms, but at a much, much lower rate than the US.
Pro gun nuts talk about the right to bear arms to protect themselves against a tyranical government, but
the more likely scenario is that you get shot by your neighbor.
You can assert that I'm somehow LESS free than you... but thats a point of view with no substance to back it up.
Even in the US, you cant walk around with a mini-nuke in your pocket, so does that make you LESS free than the
guy who can ?
You also talk as if civilised society didn't exist prior to the US Constitution and "the right to bear arms" and
cannot exist without it and on this I call BULLSHIT.
There are plenty of other democratic countries in the world who seem to get by just fine without the US Constitution.
Its one model of many. Does it work ? Yes. Is it perfect ? Not by a long shot. None of them are.
Yes, that would explain why you and all your screechbot buddies are in mass graves.
Oh, wait: you're not.
You don't even believe your own bullshit, son. If you did, you wouldn't be screeching on the web. You'd be hiding in your closet, pissing yourself every time you heard a knock on the door. What a fucking joke. At least I'll put my name to my views. Son? You presume that you are somehow older and wiser than me? And my friends? Based upon what insightful information ? My pimple-faced innocense died a long time ago. How about you ?
I don't need to hide in the closet if someone knocks on my door... I'm not in fear of being shot. There is a chance it may still happen, but I dont own a gun - nor do any of my mates, my family, my neighbors. We still have crime, people killing each other, breakins - but no more or less than the US - and yet, anarchy isnt running wild on the streets? But the citizens aren't armed to the teeth... how is that possible ???
I'm sure they're out there, but they play no part in my life whatsoever.
I live in Ballarat, Australia - the first major instance where Australians rose up against the governing English... that was then, this is now. There's not a gun to be found and we're doing ok. Must be a fucking miracle.

If you're ok with the population of a medium-sized town disappearing every year due to Americans shooting other Americans, then I guess you don't have a gun problem - but where I come from we dont have metal detectors and armed security in our public high schools, and 200 odd people (out of 20 million) died from a firearm last year. Thats 1 per 100,000 vs 1 per 10,000 for the US. Theres an order of magnitude difference.
