Suns Java Desktop based on GNOME is, quite frankly, crap. I would much rather see them develop something of their own, something that isn't slow as hell on a 2.2GHz AMD64 with with 1GB of RAM and a Radeon 9700
Despite its ugliness, I'm still using CDE on my OpenSolaris box, sipmply because it's about a hundred times snappier, and also it doesn't lack menu entries for some of the most essential management utilities for X, like JDS does.
They suck, of course. Noticeably slower 2D than their OSS counterpart (try running a 2D intensive emulator, for example), doesn't support Xinerama like the X.org driver does, and you should consider your self lucky if you manage to get good framerates from the OpenGL screensavers in XScreensaver.
Yes it does. It's working just fine for me, thank you very much. I'm using Ubuntu AMD64 with LILO, since I couldn't quite get the hang on GRUB which was installed by default.
From reading Slashdot, I thought Europe was a utopia with perfect and just laws.
Norway isn't a member of the European Union. Hence, the articles about copyright and patent law that's been published for in the last couple of months does not apply to Norway.
Matrox? Don't count on it. They've just "recently" gone from being one of the best supported video card makers, both 2D and 3D, in linux, to one of the absolut worst after they switched to a closed source model of providing their own drivers.
"Worst?", I hear you say, "How can that be? My ATI doesn't work great either!". Well, consider this; It's been almost a year since their last driver was released. It doesn't support Linux 2.6 yet. People are trying to patchthingsup, but it's a losing battle. It doesn't support SMP either, which means that any P4/HT users are out of luck. And I'm not just talking about not actively enhancing the drivers for SMP, no, it will outright crash and bring the the whole computer down with it if you som much as think of starting an OpenGL application. Oh, and while we're at it, there is of course no support at all for AMD64.
Quite frankly, Matrox has remained so apathetic to the Linux crowd that I'm now convinced that they tricked us all just to get our money, and deep down inside they just hate us.
Thanks, but MPlayer doesn't display any content encoded with the latest QuickTime codec (such as all new trailers) without the binary DLL from the real QuickTime package. Unfortunately, that's not available for SPARC64.
A triple screen where you actually get a broader field of view would be amazing, although I won't hold my breath.
Me neither, since this functionality was actually in the game up until version 1.4, when EA (or was it DICE?) decided it would be cheating to have a wider perspective than others with only one monitor. Version 1.5 removed all support for surround gaming, and it hasn't been put back in 1.6.
Yep, that's what FFmpeg and FFserver is for. It's not even close to finished, but I've tested it and it streamed live TV as ASF and RM over a 512Kb DSL just fine.
Andy Serkis: Hi every body. My name is Andy Serkis, and I'm delighted to receive this award on behalf of everybody who brought Gollum to life. Can't actually be with you this evening because we're down in New Zeeland completing more shots on Gollum for the Return of the King. I'm actually in the motion capture studio where we do a lot of Gollum. Eehmm... I would like to say a big thank you to all the MTV fans, to the Lord of the Rings fans, and to everybody who worked on Gollum. It is a complete marriage of skills-
Bad Gollum: You're a liar, and a thief. It's mine! I won it! It was me! You only won because of me!
Good Gollum: And me. MTV is my friend. My friend.
Bad Gollum: You don't have any friends. Nobody likes you.
Good Gollum: Dobby likes me!
Bad Gollum: Dobby? Dobbs's a *BEEP*cking *BEEP*.
Andy Serkis: That's enough, Gollum.
Bad Gollum: Piss off, Serkis, you stupid fat worthless *BEEP* turd.
Andy Serkis: I'm not fat.
Bad Gollum: We're not gonna thank anyone, oh noo. Not you, not MTV, and not those pigs at WETA digital, or Peter Jackson my precious. Who do you think you are, you *BEEP*ng hack? Shame on you! Shame on you! Go f*BEEP* your self.
Good Gollum: Not listening. Not listening.
Bad Gollum: Frankly, nothing can compensate for the long hours and low pay and miserable experience we've had making this *BEEP*ing movie. And if you think *BEEP* you getting this top of gold popcorn is going to remotely make up for everything we've suffered, you're sadly *BEEP*ng mistaken. You're all bastards! MTV sucks! We hate you all!
Nope, it a competitor to the DisplayPort.
How good is it as a multimedia machine? What file formats and codecs does it play? Should I go for a chipped xbox, or wait for the xbox 360?

Yes, but unfortunately, they're both crap.
No, it was made of pudding. Chocolate pudding. Mmmmmm... T-1000...
the only common thread is X-Windows (and not always that...what's about Sun's JDS Java Desktop System?)
JDS is X11 and GNOME with all the buttons relabeled to SUN- or Java-something. Not only that, but in Solaris x86, the X11 server is X.org 6.8.

No, they probably would not. What is your point?
1. Buy green paint
2. Buy green cloth
That's it.
Wtf is a podcast?
Ah, Wikipedia to the rescue!

Too bad it doesn't work.
It starts off by telling me that it's found every SCSI adapter on the planet in my computer, except the one actually I have, of course.
Moving on, it also finds my FireWire adapter, which is great, considering I don't have one.
After that, the hotplug-o-meter fills up and then it just stays full. I've waited for about 10 minutes now, it doesn't get any further.
Oh well, guess my 4 year old computer is too new for Morphix.
Yes, the Motorola A920 and A925. Hi3G (aka. Three in Europe) are selling their A925 for 750SEK (about $80) at the moment.

Cool. Maybe you could tell me how to compile mplayer to be able to watch the trailer on Solaris/SPARC64?

If I'm not mistaken it uses a Hitachi SH4, so you have a point.
Yep, that's what FFmpeg and FFserver is for. It's not even close to finished, but I've tested it and it streamed live TV as ASF and RM over a 512Kb DSL just fine.
So that's it! It thought it was weird that this server started over from 0.
Check out H+BEDV Antivir. It's free for personal use, and it integrates just fine with Qmail as is, or with AMaViS if you prefer using that.
