The point I was trying to make is that I don't really think there are any essential knowledge that the /. audience needs to have in common. I think /. has a large enough variety of articles that appeal to geeks of most kinds so that you really can't classify someone as the typical /. user. I could see someone who doesn't even know what open source (but learning quickly around here :)) coming to /. TFAs about YRO or green tech.

Of course, that does mean less sex :-(

I guess the consolation prize is more time for /. yeah, that's a mighty thin silver lining but it's the best i got :)

Why don't they come up with the environmental criteria/requirements and state that the application submitter must complete the study and submit the findings with the application. If further study would be required, they could then investigate or push it back to the requesting company/agency.

TFA states that they are doing the study to determine these environmental criteria/requirements. Surely you can see a problem with solar companies doing that kind of research for the government. Might be a just a tad biased.

If you ever have the chance, go to Tarifa, Spain. It's one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

The beaches are nice and wide with fine sand. It makes for a perfect place to ride wind powered boards and of course kite surfing in the ocean.

All of this wind also makes for the perfect location for windfarms. The area around Tarifa is spotted with the turbines. Honestly that was my favorite view was to stand on the beach and watch all of turbines happily spinning up on the mountains producing nice clean energy.

If I had faster internet I'd find you some links for pics.

I think you are confusing stupidity with ignorance which is a big mistake. Just because someone isn't wise to all of the risks and no-nos in computers doesn't mean they are stupid. How much do you know about quantum physics or hispano-arabic literature? Because you lack knowledge in a field doesn't make you stupid.

The future of computers isn't every user learning so much more about computers but computers being more and more idiotproof. And these ignorant computer users are the majority of the market so guess where things are heading.

Most highschools have AP classes for their brighter kids to help them get a leg up in university and hopefully get a few credits. As shitty as my school was with most things they did do one brilliant move that helped make up for a lot.

Dual enrollment. My highschool allowed us to take classes at the local community college that would count for highschool while simultaneously they would count as college classes. Since we had such a small school we actually managed to get the professors to come out to our school and teach a few of the classes so we wouldn't have to rearrange our class schedule or even drive over to the community college.

This obviously is only a feasible for junior/senior years but it's programs like this that I think can really help to allow the high achievers to challenge themselves and prepare for university in a meaningful way.
