Actually it changed recently..... but for the worse. It's worse now than ever. I use Yahoo weather which gets its data from weather.com. The problem with that is it's delayed a bit.
I'm sure they wouldn't bung up google.com. They would just create a my.google.com portal where users can do all the bunging you want without harming everyone else.. Seems like a no brainer to me.
I hate to be a jerk but I can't believe you were moderated 5:insightful. More like 1:dumb to think that google would bung up any of their existing sites.
Agreed. Just because samaba uses an MS protocol you dismiss it???? even if it works? Screw that. I use Samba because it's easy to setup and all my machines like it.
I agree. I tried an upgrade to apache 2 at the same time I was testing RH 8 (ugh) and experienced some odd httpd behaviour on sites running php. I kept my production server at apache 1.3 and RH 7.3 because that combo is like butter.
I'm happy with 7.3 but that happiness come from the stability and the ease of updating. I believe I read that it would be at the end of this year 7.3 would no longer be included in RH network which means the ease of updating goes away.
Ironically the first distro I ever attempted to install was Debian from this book it kicked my ass which is when I went to RH 5. Been with RH ever since.
I ran gentoo 1.2 on my desktop for a few months, until I realized it was requiring way to much tinker time. emerge/portage is very nice but I question gentoo's stability.
Let me preface this stating I know very little about Debian so please be gentle. I am more a web developer than a sys-admin, though I wear both hats. I don't like babysitting the server I have a few sites running on therefore I chose RH for the RH Network and up2date. I prefer RH 7.3 but recently I got a little worried when I read something here about RH cutting 7.3 off. I tried 8 once and it just wasn't stable. I havn't tried 9 yet but I guess I'm not all that optimistic after my 8 experience.
Anyhow, this got me thinking... would this be a good time to go ahead and switch to a different distro? Of course Debian was first to enter my mind since I read it's praises here all the time. Here's my question, after the initial investment of time into the install how much time should expect to invest in a Debian install? Will apt make it easy for me to keep my server updated with the latest security patches? Are there Debian lists to let me know when there's a security patch I need?
I hope I've explained myself well enough to get some helpful responses. Also, if there's another distro you would recomend let me know.
This is old old old news. Walmart started renting dvd's back in November of last year. I know because at the time I owned Netflix shares and it was a big hub bub which people quickly got over when they realized Walmart offering sucked. I bought the shares at around 6 and sold at around 11. Now look where they are... 22.
I've also been a happy Netflix subscriber since 2000. I know Walmart cannot compete with the Netflix process and the fact that Netflix has huge market share.
I think that's a great idea but it would require the parks system to do a little work to accomodate the taxpayers who pay for the park in the first place!
Whew, sorry about that. I'm just worked up because of the way a local state park is being managed.
This sounds bad but I act like I don't know much about hardware. I tell them, "Yes I work on a computer but I have no idea what goes on inside of one."
I don't know about everyone else but I have terrible luck with WD drives. I've experienced 3 drive failures in my computer lifetime and they've all been WD's. I have a few Maxtor's though that have been humming along for years not with no problems. I've decided I'll only by Maxtor IDE drives.
I was about to say the same thing. My crazy uncle from Alabama brought one to family christmas way back when. My roommates and I began assembly of our own as soon as we returned from winter break.
When we fired them at night a 4 foot blue flame shot out of the barrel. It was good college fun, but that was in '92.
Yes, php has mysql functions but a good developer would use a db abstraction layer such as PEAR:DB or adoDB which is basicly what DBI provides perl. So there really is no difference in this respect.

KDE 3.0 is Out

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm hoping I'll finally be able to convert my wife to Linux with the help of KDE 3.0 and get her off the horid Win98.
The only problem is will I be able to install Mandrake/KDE 3.0 on a 1.2 gig drive? Hopefully if I carefully choose the packages installed I will.
Cripes! What are you thinking. People have to get paid and if advertising isn't working then you must charge subscription fees. Do you work for free? I don't think so.
I for one think that $20 isn't too much to pay to keep my yahoo email, especially if they remove ads.

Didn't redhat contribute alot to gnome?
Nickel Exchange was a good idea although it obviosly didn't work out.

Great info, I'll read this once the /. crowd eases up.
I can already tell that the Debian community is strong and helpful, gives me alot of confidence in attempting my first install.
Great info thanks for the reply.

Can anyone convince me otherwise?

What you can't do without news about meteors nearly missing the earth for one day?

We started using a wiki about a month ago and we love it! We named it "The Brain" and it "keeps getting smarter". Highly recommended.
Since you seem to be a cold fusion shop, try this out http://www.cdsi-solutions.com/cfwiki/ we had it running in about 2 minutes.
