I had it running at 128 MB RAM with NT 4 as guest OS. It put some weight on Linux but unless you are into time-critical operations you actually can work within both OSes. Mouse grabbing etc worked just great, it was like having just another X app running. If you decide to run the guest full screen, speed approaches native state at a level of four fifth. They've certainly done a good job on this one and I will order a copy ASAP.
Hm, I didn't expect that kind of Spanish Inquisition...
Well, honestly, should Slashdot start to actually censor news, just because some people may misunderstand them?
I for one want to be informed about the devel series and since Slashdot is my No 1 source of information I expect it to pass everything noteworthy, may it be "dangerous" to some or not.
"Newbies" will find many more ways to spoil their box then you might imagine.

Because it's nonsense.
Usenix subsides developement of the *BSDs and Debian because CDs of their distributions will be given away for free at the Usenix Technical Conference in June (I submitted this story to slashdot, but well...).
All of them are non-commercial organizations who rely on donations solely. But this doesn't mean that they are at the brink of collapsing. The term 'charity' is not just false, it was used in an inflammatory sense here.
That's why.

With Linux seeming to gain popularity, it'd be nice if when you're told to edit "/foo/bar" it's actually there, instead of finding it at "/bar/foo/bar" or something. I realize this is being worked on but what is being DONE? Check out the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard at http://www.pathname.com/fhs/. Quite a while around, but it doesn't look like anybody cares...
Well, I wasn't all that suprised about this article. I've been reading stuff like that for years.
What indeed surprises me are the reactions of most of the commentators here. 'Minor Mistakes'? Beg your pardon? Besides of the many factual errors which may have been prevented by really doing some research before writing (aren't journalists required to do so?), the actual FUD comes - as usual - at the end:
"The March release of GNOME 1.0 for general download displayed the best and worst aspects of open-source development: while thousands of people downloaded the program, they found many more bugs and issues than the GNOME team had anticipated."
Well, GNOME so-called '1.0' was buggy, but not as a result of its OS nature. I don't really want to do start that desktop war over again, but KDE's later betas were a lot more stable (besides: no, I am not using KDE...).
The author's 'compliment' is indeed pure FUD : OS is depicted as an unprofessional bunch of part-time hackers, that doesn't even know the difference between a beta and a final version. Do you really agree to this? Are you so possessed by being covered in 'big' media that you are willing to take such abuses? Excusing a journalist who obviously hasn't done his job right and wrote an article indeed full of 'bugs and issues' (and who surely won't write a fix)?
Haven't you noticed how/. works? You can actually *submit* stories (there is a link on the left, ya see?)... So stop complaining and start participating.
I hope RMS has a good alibi *grin*. Possibly someone didn't paid attention to the warning sign: "iMacs are supposed to blow up at customer's home ONLY"
is to integrate those poor, ms-impaired masses into our community. Yep, I said community. Everyone just mocking at new users is just too lazy to do the *real* work, something harder than compiling or CLI fiddling, something which distinguishes Linux and other free OSs: the building of a community. Cut your sociopathic comments. *You* are the one who is not worth using Linux.
Hm. I am a longterm user of S.u.S.E. (yeah, hit me) and never encountered any delays except from 6.0, which was because more than half of the staff fell victim to an influenza. At least it seems very unfair to me to compare them to Microsoft. Their users would be happy if MS's delays could be counted in *weeks*.
Yeah, I vote for that one! Sounds way cooler than 'GNU/Linux'
