The weapons are explained in the first Mass Effect book, Revelation. They don't fire particles of air, they rely on ammo. To quote from the book about assault rifles: 'The ammo clip on each weapon held over four thousand rounds; miniature pellets smaller than grains of sand. When fired at sufficient velocity, the nearly microscopic projectiles were capable of inflicting massive damage.' In ME2 (don't worry, not really a spoiler), a soldier near where you arrive on the Citadel talks about a dreadnaught firing (numbers/facts may be wrong, this is from memory) a 20kg iron bolt at 1.3% of the speed of light, with the resultant impact being on a similar order of magnitude to a nuclear bomb.

  5. Re:Prices compared to retail? on Is Valve's Steam Anti-Competitive? · · Score: 1

You do occasionally get a decent deal on Steam, but most of the time any temporary price reductions of games just bring prices down to around what is expected from online retailers of games, some of which, including Play.com and Amazon.co.uk, offer free delivery (on orders above £5 for Amazon, and all orders from Play.com). I've seen the price of Dawn of War 2 bounce around all over the place on Play.com. Right now its at £24.99 but I've seen it go right down to £11.99. Price on Steam? £34.99, same as when it was released back in February.

  6. Re:Prices compared to retail? on Is Valve's Steam Anti-Competitive? · · Score: 1

Not true. Generally speaking, games are more expensive on Steam than online retailers. As an example, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is £29.99 on Steam. On Play.com, it is £17.99. Risen is £34.99 on Steam, £24.99 on Play.com. In fact, from the games listed on the front page's scrolling display that have identical retail products as of the time of writing this post, the only game with identical prices on both places is Left 4 Dead 2 (and only because Steam has reduced the price by a few quid temporarily).

You just need to look at recently released MMORPGs such as Age of Conan and Warhammer: Age of Reckoning to see that a strong start is very important to anything competing in the same space as WoW. Most players only want to play one such game, after all.

Actually, it was this morning. I had trashed a colleague's external drive, and along with it 100GB of data. In a flat panic, I hauled my Firewire 800 RAID enclosure from Lacie, and together with the totally amazing Data Rescue II from Prosoft, I had almost all of his data back back by Lunch today. The sheer speed of a Firewire 800 drive compared to a USB 2.0 drive made it all worth the while. USB simply doesn't compare in terms of reliability and speed. I'm not sure if I'm reading a /. comment or an advert. For two companies at once! How much did you get paid for that?

Care to state why MIDI is 'god-awful'? The hardware involved in MIDI isn't your crappy consumer synthesizer that you hear when you play a .mid file on your computer. That's a crappy consumer MIDI synthesizer. Hardware MIDI is a superb standard that has been around for a long time, allowing connections between keyboards, synths, samplers, computers and sequencers with (next to?) no delay. At least, no delay that I've ever noticed. If you're going to call something 'god-awful', try to know what you're talking about.

Selling their own computers is their core business, though. Allowing OS X to be installed on any x86 computer would undermine that. However, allowing Firefox onto the iPhone or iPod Touch doesn't undermine their business at all. Argubly VOIP would since you could take out a cheaper contract as they all have unlimited data, though.

I can run Unreal Tournament 3 at 1680x1050, max detail, on a cpu/mobo/ram/graphics card combo that cost me £270 a couple of months ago (would be about £30-40 cheaper now I reckon). CoD4 at highish detail settings at 1920x1200 (not tried UT3 on my 24" monitor). Supreme Commander at medium detail at 1920x1200 with the second display at 1680x1050. World in Conflict at 1920x1200 mediumish detail. So I'm not really sure what you're talking about, saying that games require such components. Because they don't.

I have a local html page with my most common links on it and a few search fields (Google, Google UK, Sourceforge, and Wikipedia), and another page for comics (I read way too many). It's not hard to implement, its just a hassle getting around to it and adding new links (particularly since I got annoyed at the plain html look and re-did it in iWeb, meaning there's code all over the place). An automatic method of doing it within the browser would be nice, but on the other hand, having 2 html files in a known location is easy to move between computers and between installs.
