  1. Patsy Walker on Recommendations For Classic Superhero Comic Collections? · · Score: 1

Back in the days when gas was 20 cents a gallon (and gas station attendent(s) pumped the gas for you plus check tire pressure, oil, and water levels), and also when Stan Lee created Spiderman, X-men, and The Avengers for the Marvel Comics group (yep, if they were real-life characters, they'd be old enough to collect social security).

Another character in Marvel "universe" was Patsy Walker. She didn't have superpowers but she had lots of beautiful dresses and unlimited budget to buy them all. Not created at Marvel but adopted from earlier comic publishers, Marvel series by artist Al Hartley, Al and Stan featured Patsy wearing various fashions submitted by readers. Probably real exciting because that was "internet forums" at the time. Examples here, http://marlendy.wordpress.com/...

Another cultural interest is this #106 April 1963 issue has lots of bouffant dress fashions popular at the time. Consider that shortly after in next year or two, this fashion was dead. http://static.comicvine.com/up...

While Stan Lee developed large male readership with Spiderman, X-men, etc. he also probably developed large female readership with Patsy Walker by engaging readers to submit fashion ideas. Though able to capitalize on movies nowadays using comic characters from more than 50 years ago, except for Patsy Walker, how many women dress up for occasions these days anyway?

Like many of early Marvel characters, Patsy Walker evolved into another form. No longer in the fancy gowns but out fighting bad guys with ferocity of a Navy SEAL as "Hellcat."

  2. SJC on Free Wi-Fi Coming To Atlanta's Airport · · Score: 2

from my experience I've found San Jose airport has really good wifi. Free, easy to connect, and pretty fast too. Far superior to Google's wifi in Mountain View. And can view whatever websites you want. Frustrating other airports don't do the same (I have used paid services but they are terribly slow), it gets really dry waiting for connecting flights (but then there is the 20th century method of getting smarter by reading a book). Very tempting to get a Ubiquiti Bullet and high gain yagi aimed at SJC airport. But there's considerable distance and many buildings and trees in between, and of course not kosher with their User Agreement.

  4. was it 1922 eclipse that provided solid data? on Happy 95th Anniversary, Relativity · · Score: 1

PBS program on Einstein mentioned images and calculations from 1919 eclipse was doubtful. Some claimed it did not show bending of light (star positions still where they should be) but others said, "not so fast." It was 1922 which William Campbell got beautiful images of stars around the eclipsed sun, observed 92 stars observed positions from where they should be. Campbell's first telegram was to Albert saying these images and calculations definitely support his theories. Of course it was not easy for Campbell, his first solar eclipse expedition in 1914 went bust at outbreak of WWI, and following attempts in later years were not good. It was 1922 which Campbell got great images while everyone else (and there were several) either got weathered out or had poor techniques. Another fascinating talked about in this PBS program was after WWI Germans were hated by Brits, French, Americans but Einstein was very welcomed and was a huge "rock star" where all these people wanted to meet him, get autographs, get pic taken with him. Even though virtually all don't understand theory of relativity.

But all these forums you gotta register with account name and password.

There used to be usenet where anyone can post and read, and since it was not technically sophisticated, you can't really copy/paste same crap over and over (you had to type your writings like a typewriter). This was also before the marketeers and spammers overran everything. sob!

Here we live in a country that has a fabulous constitution and all these guarantees, a contract between the citizens and the government - nobody knows what's in it. It's one of the best kept secrets.

I wonder after the turbulent 1960s, there has been a systematic process to dumb down general population and repress anyone that seriously challenges The System.

Getting back to math, it seems there's all kinds of new methods such as the New Math or Core Math or whatever. To me, math is math. We start with arithmetic (these are like learning basic dance steps i.e. basic waltz box of forward, side, together, back, side, together), then move into algebra and trig (moving the waltz on line of dance), then calculus because that's where the action is (dance analogy of add sway and style to the waltz, accentuating the musicality and beat management by phrasing to the music). And if you really got the urge go for the researcher/PhD/mathematician (open pro competition dancer) where you define new concepts.

There was an article "Children Can Learn Calculus" and it was mentioned all endless timed tests (teachers call them "drill and kill") given throughout K-12 like the military where soldiers given several repeating small tasks as a form of punishment.

Kind of like way back when in Europe only royals and nobles can buy land, and was motivator for commoners to take chances moving to the New World.

I also recall for parachuting equipment (canopies, rigs, etc) all are TSO and materials had to be MIL-SPEC. I probably can cut the cord and not miss much. However, living in condo limits OTA.

Speaking of OTA, I find amusing advertisements "watch HDTV for free with this amazing device! You can spend $100/month, that's $1200 per year and $12,000 for 10 years! But with this for only $19.95 you will never need to subscribe or pay monthly fees. You can watch lots of HDTV from the major broadcasters thanks to the FCC ruling that says they must broadcast digital over the air. Call this number and get started on watching HDTV for free!" Geez, it's an antenna but that is a clever line about FCC (they didn't say TV has to be broadcast over the air for free viewing, it just has to be digital). I'm old enough to remember when receiving TV from an antenna is common practice but I guess for many young people have never seen that so they figure this "device" is amazing (young techies are exception).
