  3. XP is what to beat - not Vista on Ubuntu 8.10 Outperforms Windows Vista · · Score: 5, Insightful

Vista has already lost in the marketplace. More and more companies are skipping Vista to go from XP to Windows 7 because of all the performance and compatability issues with Vista. So comparing Ubuntu (or any OS actually) to Vista is fairly useless. If you want to make a case for business, do it against the OS's that business really uses - in this case Windows XP, or in the future, Windows 7.

  8. Don't forget the 14th amendment on Supreme Court Holds Right to Bear Arms Applies to Individuals · · Score: 1

Well, this ruling is not the end all of this fight. The ruling explicit states that this is a FEDERAL law, so there still exists a fight to determine if the 2nd amendment is incorporated into the 14th amendment. That is an interesting legal question because the justices who ruled in favor the the second amendment generally do not believe the incorporation doctrine of the 14th amendment is correct, but the dissenting justices do believe in incorporation. SO when the eventual trials form Chicago get tot he courts, the next issue will be to decide if the 2nd amendment is applied to the states through incorporation in the 14th amendment. This put the justices in a weird spot - because those that are in favor of gun rights are against incorporation, which means the second amendment would only apply to individuals in federal territories and that states can limit guns however they want. However, the dissenting justices would rule otherwise that the second amendment would incorporated into the 14th, but this would enforce the 2nd amendment in states, which would be agianst their liking. SO it really depends on the next battle. Will we see judicial activism, or more stick to their principles type rulings. Either way, this is a big win against government domination.

When you were in college, and every kid sat in class with your Walkman and headphones on, do you think the teachers would let that happen? These type of conspiracy-esque rants are useless. The soil at higher elevations (through exposure or UV radiation) was less favorable to microbes, and they has a theory that this related directly to the growth of plants.

That would work too, it would just need a politician with enough clout to pull it off. If you can get enough constituents to be aware of this, then you can force the members of congress into it. But unless this is somehow tied to American Idol, I seriously doubt the general American public will care. Look at how many lives that box of junk has ruined. People let their bodies rot away to giant piles of blubber sitting in front of that thing. They leave it to raise their kids. Kids know commercial jingles better than the US Pledge of Allegiance. The Blackberry has NOTHING on TV. It's just that the Blackberry is new - TV has been ruining lives for dozens of years (so I guess that makes it ok). Talk about an overprotective society. We are abstracting all our individual responsibility away to a faceless mass called "society" or "government". All that does is make people care less about their decisions because it is someone else's problem.

Like others have said, Neverwinter Nights (1 or 2) can give you this. NWN2 has fairly steep hardware requirements for what it offers, but a easier to use toolset. BUT these use 3.0/3.5 rules. I've been playing D&D since the old "red box" days. 3.0/3.5, while better in defining the mechanics that 1 or 2 ever did, can be a real bear to run encounters at of higher levels, or large encounters. I'm awaiting the arrival of the 4th edition with some trepidation, but also eagerness. there are a lot of things that are jsut very cumbersome in the current version. If they can streamline D&D while keeping the feel, I'm all for it. If I want super exacting rules I will play a game of Star Fleet Battles http://www.starfleetgames.com/ . But when playing an RPG, I really want more easy to use rules that allow a story to be told more readily.

One of the biggest things I see when hiring college grads is that while they understand how a computer works, why languages behave the way they do, and what a certain language syntax is, they have very little knowledge of how to actually build applications from initial concept to full delivery. This type of knowledge generally falls into the "Software Engineering" category. Learn how to write and read requirements. Learn how to do formal estimates from requirements. Learn about different software development life cycles. Learn about requirements traceability and testing. Learn about software patterns. A lot of these topics are covered in Masters degrees in Software Engineering, so those are good places to look at for books on it. Here is an example, you can look at the classes to find the books used http://www.cti.depaul.edu/academics/Pages/MSinSoftwareEngineering.aspx

  19. Book Selection on Kindle Versus The iPhone · · Score: 1

The one area I see this as a benefit is for technical books. I have a pretty good library of reference books and carrying them around is not feasible. These are not the books that are freely available via Google's book search. The ability to scan through a library of tech books would be very nice, as well as being able to buy them directly. I also see this as much easier for textbooks - no longer would you need to carry a giant bag of books. The iPhone/iPod is also MUCH harder to read than e-paper. The screen size is a big difference, as well as the surface. I really don't see these as competing with a proper e-reader. Given all the above, it is still hard for e-books to prosper, given how incredibly well adapted the book is for it's purpose. So while at work or school I may look to a Kindle or other e-book reader to look through various tomes, at home at the end of the day when I read for pleasure it will always be a real book.
