    When you cite inflation, which is by and large a made up
    number... maybe you should give some examples of
    inflationary products.

    So, which items have inflated?

    Right, so why should we say that we are
    neglecting inflation on CD prices. We're
    not, there would be $0 inflation on such an
    item.

    Thus, the price should have gone down
    much more significantly than it did and
    what has happened as it was stated before,
    production costs went down, profit margin
    went up... and all rejoiced. Well, everyone
    that was enjoying that profit margin.

    Not to suggest she knew anything about diamonds, but the price for a 3 carat ring can vary a lot depending on its quality and source. A $16,000 3 carat ring is going to look pretty shoddy, even to a someone that doesn't know much about what to look for. Maybe she just figured that he got it at a pawn shop or that it was fake.

    I was thinkin that too, right? That's pretty cheap for a 3ct
    diamond, by itself... but set? I remember a 1ct VVS1 D
    that lightened my pocket for +6.5k, I was like, are you
    kidding? Then I was told the supersize was more than
    double that.

    1) Marry someone smart enough that you can explain the following to them...
    2) Diamonds are not rare, they are scooped out of the earth millions of carats at a time each year

    Try bringing a nice size emerald to a jeweler and watch the salivation begin. Ever see the
    "bling" watches? What are they pave with? 2ct of diamonds, that are 2pt in size? Those
    100 diamonds are probably worth... $20-$30. Ever see one of those bling watches pave
    with rubies or emeralds? You won't. Or if they do use ruby, it'll be synthetic. Or worse,
    color treated sapphire.

    I guess you missed the part that the boyfriend (and girlfriend) recently visited the victims house. So what's more likely, the boyfriend stole the ring, or that after his visit, a junkie broke in, stole the ring, traded it to a drug dealer, who then traded it for a car stereo, who then sold it to the boyfriend (who was recently at the victims house).

    Admittedly, it's very similar to Buddhism... just without the requirement for belief in the supernatural.

    Ahh, maybe you should study Buddhism a bit more,
    no supernatural here... [some divisions of Buddhism
    don't accept the reincarnation thing] and no cool stories
    to tell kids on Sunday. And no one tells you how to
    think. It's just, do no harm and help others.

    But still, good on helping others. And if you don't need
    to accept a religion to feel that way (you might want to
    look up the definition of religion however...) that's great!

    If you have a problem fixing any computer, just don't fix it.

    I've gotten such severely infected systems that I spend the greater part of my weekend cleaning said infections and uninstalling malware only to pop in a couple spare sticks of RAM or an old video card (where there was once only on-board video). Why? Because I like the people around me and I like to make sure the quality of life is good... if not better than what it was. Seriously. I care about my friends and coworkers and friends of coworkers and coworkers of friends. If they need help and I can help them, I'm going to do it.

    Just remember to do a full write-up of all the actions you did:

    --Quote the number of infections
    --Install as much free/open-source alternatives to their malware-ridden pirated software as possible
    --List the names of the software and describe what they do
    --List some "best practices" for real-world computer usage.
    --Let them know that you do this so their lives can be easier and so they have to spend less money now and in the future.

    Put that write-up on the desktop and give a mini-presentation to the owner before they retake the computer. They'll appreciate the education, they'll appreciate the free utility and any upgrades you surprise them with, once they understand the effort involved in the service a friend provides for free, they'll appreciate /you/.

    I've always wondered whether or not land speed records would be better if your craft was only allowed to gain traction off the ground . Similarly with water speed records. Else, as you say, it's simply a case of keeping a rocket in near-constant contact with the ground. The vehicles certainly wouldn't look like rockets with pram wheels...

    I'm part of the SCTA... and we actually have classes, or as you
    say, vehicles that do the "traction thing" and vehicles that do
    the 'reaction thing'.

    We have a ridiculous amount of classes, but in such a very
    competitive sport, you need them otherwise arguments break
    out about displacement, fuel, aerodynamics, etc. There's 12
    different engine classes alone times nearly 30 car classes.

    I ran and held a record (broken now, unfortunately) in the
    B/BGMS, with what is now, a pitiful 212mph. Well, it's
    not that far off from the 224.95 out now, but when talking
    about cross sections and drag, it is pretty far off for my car.

    Still not bad in a 4200lb vehicle, that I drove to the lakebed,
    from Ventura, CA, raced it and drove back home again. In
    May, thru the desert.

    and the rise of GPGPU processing, some NFL teams will hire the
    programmers of the best games out there to create simulations in
    a virtual environment, distilling every game against every other team
    into just a few sets of plays that will work effectively.

    My first word processor, I used when I was in the
    7th grade. Made beautiful work with that DMP2100.
    Never, ever went back to hand writing or paper typing
    work again. A convert, 33 years ago.

    I don't see the computers really eating up the "brains"
    jobs... just middle workers.

    a middle worker [lovely pay, but still, doing pedantic
