You're right, and that's why nobody has "unrestricted and unsupervized access" to the ballot box once it contains ballots. It is kept locked and in full public view during the election, and the ballots are carefully supervised (by at least two poll workers, usually more) at all times afterwards.

You are exceedingly naive if you think reality is the same thing as the rules. What if I, and a group of like-minded associates, run the polls in your precinct? We can run off any "independent observers" and do what we like with the ballot boxes. We can even pretend to be representatives of the major parties. We were all appointed by the local board of elections, whose members were all hand-selected for their willingness to "go with the program" by the local political boss.

It isn't that simple. Regulated DC power supplies need to be physically close to their loads in order to work properly. In extreme cases, like for modern CPUs that run on low voltages, they are on the same PCB, adjacent to the load.

Only the purchasing department really care where a part actually comes from.

In the real world, you can get burned by assuming that all widgets are identical, regardless of manufacturer. Some manufacturers produce crap, that barely meets the specs and fails or degrades at a high rate. Some circuits will not work properly if the part's performance is too far off, for better or worse, from the performance of the part used in the prototype. Just because the manufacturer say that it's compatible doesn't mean that it is in your application.

I have always wondered what sort of chance there was of a nuclear detonation when it impacted the ocean bottom and what effect it would have had... a tsunami perhaps?

No chance. Nuclear weapons have multiple safeguards against accidental detonation. Even if the impact detonated the high explosives in the warhead, it would not produce a significant nuclear yield. To produce the spherical shock wave needed to implode the plutonium core, a large number of initiators must all fire simultaneously, with very precise timing. In addition, a neutron generator must be activated at just the right time to kick-start the chain reaction.
