I would estimate by no know statistics and only by experienced guesses, that most transactions of this sort happen in IRC, private IRC channels to be precise. In the underground world it's relatively easy to get credientials, but hard to "cash out" as they would say. So what really happens is that you sell stuff for pennies on the dollar (I've seen visa black cards advertised for 150$!) to someone who has the means to actually turn that into cash (read: mob/gangsters/stupid kids) who use all kinds of methods but the amatuer focuses on things like egold etc. Forums are notorious in the underground for being easy to penetrate by law enforcment and easily recorded, whereas IRC can be encrypted and you can generally vet who you are talking to with many others. Plus they can only find you channels and stuff if they know it, they dont know they cahnnel they cant find it. anyway, just a small slightly innacurate summarized glimpze into the world of identity theft.

As a long time PC gamer, I have come to the conclusion that there are only two reason to upgrade your video card. 1) A new fancy game you must play at high settings to enjoy needs more juice from your rig. 2) You find a good performance to price ratio card that fits your gaming needs. I tend to upgrade about once every year or year and a half. I am currently still running on the BFG OC 8800GT (for $200 in Dec 07). I play everything from the good old stand by counter-strike: source, left 4 dead, call of duty 4, far cry 2, ut3 and many more to the non graphically intense without so much as a hiccup. Having used the tutorials included to get familar with the required L4D entities, I would say this is the biggest step forward for valve, but mostly for hammer that I have seen. The reason is simple, hammer is not easy (easy compared to maya and softimage) but not easy to design a level within, by allowing me to do most of the design in sketchup I can reduce the time spent just doing basic design (walls, floors ect) by more than half. That being said...the requirement to have these objects grouped before being able to export to vmf, and then to hammer for fine tuning, is quite an annoyance. I did an entire scientific lab layout last night in about 1 hour and tried to export it but once the vmf got into hammer literally none of my brushes imported because a couple of them hadnt been grouped properly. (which is also part of the not allowing convex surfaces in hammer thing). Anyway, overall great step, and it is still just in beta......

  9. A Combat Vets Thoughts... on Iraq Game Sparks Outrage, Soldiers Have Mixed Reactions · · Score: 1

As a combat vet in the (USMC), instead of just lurking like usual I feel I should input my thoughts on the subject. I was in the mideast when Operation Phantom Fury started, and volunteered to go replace guys the were wounded like a good Marine, but didn't get to. So while I don't have Fallujah experience directly, I have lots of buddies who did. One thing you have to understand is the difference between the first and second battles, the former of which was basically a complete failure, and then that damned Mr. Conway fucking GIVES the fallujah brigade (read: insurgents pretending to be US allied) a supply of US weapons, hoping they would control the city, but then of course they just run away with US supplied weapons ready to kill US soldiers. This is what spurred the Second battle. The school incident just created more insurgents, and on top of that Al-Zarqawi was suspected to be there too. So we started warning the city, basically get the fuck out if your a civilian, and if your an insurgent go ahead and stay but were coming for your ass with extreme prejudice. Supposedly about 80+/-% of the civilians actually left, and then we started. I was fucking intense and fast, and more or less everything that moved got shot for the most part. We kicked ass and took names, but, and its much more complex than this, your have to distinguish the difference between nonlocal and local insurgents, and what we called martyrs and guerrillas. What happened was that with our warning, most of the non-local guerrillas left the city as civilians, and we were left with mostly local martyrs and guerrillas. This is what destabilized the anbar province afterwards because they figured out that if they just left what ever new area of operations we set up, they could continue their work. So ramadi, haditha, hit, ect turned into new insurgent holdouts. Okay, I could keep going on, but in regards to the game, its just a fucking game. I am an avid gamer, and have played counter-strike since beta 1.2. It's a game that helps me relieve stress and have fun with buddies online, usually trash talking in ventrilo. Its for fun. That being said, I think what people are missing the most is that this game is mostly being put together with the help of veterans that want to tell THEIR STORY. Stories you hear from vets are guaranteed to be more interesting and singular than you ever hear on the news. Many of the vets doing so are very similar to the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and I willing to bet they would approve just as much. The question is, is the main purpose to be fun, tell a story, or be realistic. Whatever it is, they need to do a good job of it. Now, all that being said, war is not pretty and I don't think it should be portrayed as such. How about a game where you start in boot camp being all patriotic and kill kill kill, and progressively learn that the real world doesn't work like that, that you do things that will haunt you for the rest of your life for some faceless politician who doesn't even respect the same constitution you swore to uphold, you realize war is just a racket (and one you were a part of) for rich men to get richer while poor men get "deader" and that your country is going down the drain faster than if someone just cleaned it with drain o, and now you, a true patriot, are even ashamed sometimes to call yourself American and even are considering moving to another country because of how helpless you feel to do anything about anything because you think that anything short of a real revolution and we are doomed... Well, for lots of young veterans, that's not a game, its called life.

Great opening, insult me and then ask for a rational explanation of my position. Someone needs to go back to college rhetoric 101! (see I can do it too =P) I should clarify that I dont think Vista is unstable. At least not as much as XP. I deal with both daily. It is the overall package of vista, small bugs, interfaces changes that annoying to end users that like stuff "where they usually are", legacy program support, the dreaded overall polish, and ESPECIALLY the weird things done to TCP/IP and networking that make it good enough for home users, but not quite worth the trouble for a company to upgrade to. But in all seriousness, for the most part, anyone who was going to buy Vista more than likely has already, minus those companies that are waiting for hardware leases to be up. Ahh, but "then a good SP won't matter!, they aren't going to buy Vista if they haven't already" you say, trying to use my previous point against me. Well, a lot of the time a business decides the next step in regards to IT by *gasp* consulting the IT guys. I personally work with many medium to small size businesses and have the influence to say "Yes you should upgrade to vista." or "No, you should wait for windows 7 depending on how it progresses." So, a service pack that does enough good stuff to impress the IT guys could potentially make them much more friendly to recommending a Vista upgrade vs wait for 7. And I bet there are more guys like me out there keeping a keen eye on stuff like that. Regardless, the entire point is moot. What you or I think doesn't matter, if you would have ready my original post, you would see that I said "That may not be the actuality, but I bet a handful of people think that way there.(referring to Microsoft)" So all it takes is a couple of people at Microsoft thinking that they can get even a fraction more revenue by withholding the Vista SP till closer to Windows 7 release, and I garunfuckintee you they will do it like that, whether its based on fact or not. And before you say "Well Microsoft would fact check that stuff more so they know if it really will make them more money." Think about this, THEY'RE ALREADY DOING IT THAT WAY, so they must be onto something.
