You are Insulted? How would you feel if you agreed to let a friend borrow your car and he decided that the fact that it was in his posession allowed him to sell it to the highest bidder or destroy it? Sure, he would be in posession of it, but that does not grant him the right to do with it whatever he chooses.
You don't like Wal Mart (a store that sells inexpensive stuff), but yet you justify theft in order to obtain a product for a lower price. Sounds like your beliefs are fairly at odds with those of the rest of the civilized world.
Corrrect. Darse Billings is the guy who created the RoShamBo programming competition a few years ago. Very cool stuff. His personal website has more on this.
You have no idea how much money Adobe was making (or losing) by continuing the product. I would guess you are wrong about the profitability. At the very least, developing/supporting Premiere for mac must have seemed like an inferior way to use the company's resources: The product may have been profitable, but it may not have been remotely as profitable as other products or projects the company is working on.
Let's just force Microsoft to allow anyone participating in an Open Source project and owning a gun to rob anyone he/she likes while on the Redmond campus.
Earth to Slashdot: If you don't like a certain piece of closed source software because it is closed source, then develop your own version and give away the source. It's as simple as that.
Mine is mild, but I hated Ritalin, and never refilled the initial prescription...
I found that ritalin was great if I wanted to do something like read a man file, but aweful if I wanted to actually solve a complex problem.
The best thing for me was to start getting 40+ minutes of cardiovascular exercise at least 3 times per week, and to eat mostly vegetables. After the first 2 weeks of this regimen, it was as though everything came into much better focus, sans ritalin.
Best of luck. I recommend trying a "mostly vegetable" and lots of cardio regimen for at least 30 days before seeking any other treatment. Also, stay away from sugar and carbs.
You are free to quit at any time. Your employer is free to fire you at any time.
If at any time you feel that the relationship is not to your advantage, then if you can find something better, you should quit, or at least attempt to negotiate something better.
If you can't, then be grateful you have a job. If you find that difficult, then move back in with your parents.
If you want to blame someone for the "leaving in the dust" of authorized resellers and distributors, the folks who decided to sell the company are just as much "at fault" as Microsoft.
But the premise is absurd. They sold the company because they would rather do something else with their dollars, something everyone has the right to do, and a decision that should not be made based on some kind of absurd collectivist sympathy for the authorized resellers.
Why not create a non profit org to take money from Slashdotters and apply for all sorts of technology patents before the big companies can... that way, the org could just decide not to enforce the patents and everyone would live happily ever after.
You are in good company. Fortunately for those of us who live in the US, our foreign policy is based on goals other than pleasing the rest of the world. Our goals are certainly self-interested, and we harbor no illusions otherwise.
If you don't like the licensing, don't use the software. That applies to the Microsoft EULA, Shared Source, etc., as well as the GPL, LPGL, BSD, Apple, Sun Community License, etc., etc., etc.
Not sure if you replied to me or not,... but I think you misunderstood my comment. I was saying that OF COURSE Gates and Ballmer would sell some stock, because it would be silly to believe that Microsoft represented the best possible investment. In other words, it's a good idea to diversify.
which means he is a risk taker. He must not consider Microsoft likely to have the same kind of meteoric growth that it did. That's fine, Microsoft is a mature company now, and is not in the same situation. Ballmer would probably rather have his money invested in a few higher risk enterprises. If he does this successfully, he can buy back three times as many MSFT shares as he just sold with the proceeds.
I didn't know about rule 144... my point, however, was that even if he wanted to and could, Ballmer would be likely worse off selling all of the shares at once than selling them a few at a time.

I think it's silly to expect a $300 PC that is being marketed as a server to be designed for a top-end video subsystem.
Because he would rather complain than figure out an honest and fair solution to his problems.
Do what your boss says, but document the communication where you mention your qualms, and document everything else. In other words, CYA.
Agreed. Doing things like this will result in more censorship of Slashdot comments... do you really want that?

That means there will be a very good reason for ISPs to host their email servers in Michigan.

FYI: A 486 will not play MP3s "just fine". It will struggle, and will probably skip occasionally. Even a slow (60MHz) Pentium may have this problem.
Why would a better search engine be a bad thing?

Of course Gates supports the BSA. The BSA enforces Gates' ownership over the property he and his company have created.
I see no reason why anyone in government should care what software people use.

my mistake then... cheers!
No, you went on to talk about hype, etc. There need not be any hype for it to be rational that Gates and Ballmer diversify.
That is simply not a logical sequence of thought.
It only tells us that Gates and Ballmer are not 100% convinced that MSFT will outperform EVERY OTHER INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE TO THEM.
