There will be no way you can convince the conspiracy fans. This includes all of the conspiracy theories, you just can't satisfy these people. They will simply say that NASA and the Indian space agency are in cahoots and they will dismiss it.
If you were reading the GP's post instead of ranting, you would read about the part about hitting a tree at 120 kph (about 74 mph)! In such a case, I would want crumple zones protecting me. The Hummers rigid body probably would transfer all that energy to the meatbag inside.
By the way, I've seen all your posts in this thread and all of your points seem rather selfish. You obviously don't think of others.
If anything prevents this idea from becoming reality, it's the issue of liability . Does any company want to take on the added liability that this concept entails. For example, if a car equipped with this crashes (and it will happen) who will be liable? Even if the company is found not to be at fault, there is the cost of proving it in court.
I have a generator and it is hardwired into the house circuits. I can operate the furnace, refrigerator and most of the lights as well some small appliances. It's properly installed with a transfer switch. I could operate my computer but it's not worth the risk. Home generators often can provide relatively "dirty" power. Their voltage is nowhere as steady as the line voltage. Every time the refrigerator turns on, there is a time lag of a 1 to 2 seconds before the generator adjusts to the added load. Yes, battery backup for your computer can clean up the power but if the power is out is an emergency condition. Certainly you can do without the electronic devices for the duration of the emergency. Another point, the more electricity you use the sooner you have to refill the generators gas tank. (Of course, this point doesn't apply to natural gas powered generators.)
I know I might be dating myself but I see many similarities between texting and the CB radio craze of the 70's.
1. There is the use of the arcane abbreviations used in texting. This is similar to the stupid use of the "10 codes" which was insane.
2. The CB radio fad was expensive to get all of your equipment but once you had it, was cheap to operate. Texting is cheap upfront but very expensive to send messages. This having been said, both are expensive.
3. Many people just have to be on the bandwagon. Like CB radio, I think texting too is just a passing fascination.
Why would you want to use a form of communication that is not as expressive as speech (which has millions of years of evolutionary development). Yes speech is synchronous but for non-synchronous communication, a cheaper alternative is email. For these reasons, I believe texting will not last long.
"How can RIAA object? Yet they do, fear of sunlight shone upon them.'"
Easy, they are like roaches. Ever notice how when you enter a room infested with roaches and turn on the light? The roaches immediately run for the shadows.
I don't know which one you mean. I suggest that you get a copy of the Inferno by Dante and read it (or see wikipedia). It was circle 9, round 3 of hell. For the modern update of it (featuring Cheney) , it was a cheap performance I saw on the Ovation channel.
Interesting but Dante had figured that one out. In his version of hell, some people were in hell even before they died. The devil just can't wait for that mere formality to take you to hell. He appoints some demon to take over your body until your body dies. I actually saw an updated version of Dantes Inferno where Cheney was one of these people.
"The Department of Education is not only The Department of Education is not only unconstitutional (and thus, illegal), it DOESN'T WORK. (and thus, illegal), it DOESN'T WORK."
The only body that has the right to say something is unconstitutional is the Supreme Court. Now if you were to say "IN MY OPINION" I wouldn't have a problem with what you say because it's just your opinion. The fact that the Department of Education has existed for more than 30 years indicates that your opinion is incorrect.
Choosing a word processor to use is important. I helped write a textbook published by Springer. They not only insisted on MS Word, but wanted its writers to use a template designed by them. We started to write the book in MS Word without checking with them first. We had to convert the document to make use of their template.
Face it, you will be dealing with business types and often they will insist on a specific word processor. I wasn't very happy about using a MS product but as I wasn't the primary writer, the decision was not in my hands. Some publishers are more flexible than others. Check first before you get very far into the writing process.
First off, you should RTFA (really, it's quite interesting). The magma they are talking about is very viscous and appears not to be under a lot of pressure. The lava that comes out of the Hawaiian volcanos is rather fluid and is under considerable pressure. My guess is that this is an old magma chamber that has been cooling for quite a while. Also the article says that the chemical composition differs from the basalt that makes up the lava spewed out of the volcanoes.
As I was saying... The taxes that corporations actually pay is much less than what they complain about. In many other countries, there are not as many ways to avoid paying taxes. What in theory is a 35% tax rate is just that, theory. It is the most that they can pay and the reality is that they pay considerably less.
While the rate might seem high, the actual taxes that US corporations pay are one of the lowest taxes paid in the world. When all the loopholes, tax dodges etc. are taken into account, the actual taxes paid are very small. The EFFECTIVE rate is much lower.
I don't know how much force is generated but it could be enough to scratch a disk. Think about it...
When a disk is in the proper orientation, the axis of rotation is vertical (Pointing up). When you move the unit, the angular momentum is not changed so you are safe in slowly moving the unit back and forth or side to side. With a unit that is on its side however, there often is a rotational change when you move the unit. This rotational motion would involve a change in the angular momentum causing forces to act upon the disk.
It's a rather complicated situation and I might have gotten the explanation slightly wrong. If so, I am sure someone will correct me.
In any software that is VERY important, "One doesn't test, one proves". When a test succeeds, you have demonstrated that you have found a bug. When testing fails (no bugs were found), you have not indicated that bugs do not exist. More tests only raise our confidence that the software is good. As one of my professors says, "There always is one more bug"
Some plans for a manned Mars mission were based on there not being a return trip to Earth. Anyone who went on such a mission would be marooned there on purpose. It's not a kind of trip I would like to take.
While I agree with most of the reasons given to reject this proposal, I have a different reason for objecting. The cost of a college education is getting beyond the reach of many. Anything that adds to these costs is bad especially if it is not about education. If anything, we should be looking for ways to decrease the cost of a college education.
I know that there are a lot of people that will disagree but Pascal is a very good learning language. The good news is that it has been greatly enhanced to do more than the old "Hello World" type programs. Take a look at Free pascal at www.freepascal.org, the compiler costs nothing so you have nothing to lose. Pascal is no longer the weak pascal that you learned in the 80's.
I agree! The way inflation is calculated is a farce. Ever since the 70's (and maybe even before) items were taken out of the inflation figures. We do not have a constant measure of the actual inflation rate. How can we compare the rate of inflation now with what it was in previous years if we use different ways of making the measurement?
... and to REALLY screw things up, you need to turn to business! Look at the fiasco we have in the banking industry and the auto industry. Government has to come to the rescue and the CEO's get the gold mine while their workers (and the taxpayers) get the shaft.
" - Kids in the 1950s did not study what we study today - Kids today did not study what kids studied back in the 1950s "
Nonsense! What the kids of the 1950's learned are the basics that should be taught today. If the kids today are not being taught the basics, then the foundation of what they have to learn today is faulty.
There is serious grade inflation going on and the kids are bringing home what their parents perceive to be good grades. Their kid is bringing home report cards that show that he is doing C+ work. In the 1950's that would probably mean that he is above average. In todays school, a C+ average means that he is seriously below average. We have to rethink or entire way of assigning test scores. We continue to think that a grade of C means average while reality is quite different. To those that actually deserve an A+, how can you tell when a student that hardly worked, gets a grade of A?
Come on folks! Less than two is a preschooler and a very young one at that. The preschool years are VERY important. They should be learning about social interaction not computer interaction. They should be learning their FIRST language not a computer language. They should be learning how to get along with others not get along with a computer. A young child has a lot of important learning to do and a computer is not one of them. There is a whole lot of time later on to learn about computers. This is not one of them.
The judge should find a way to dismiss the new case with prejudice so new cases can't be filed.
There will be no way you can convince the conspiracy fans. This includes all of the conspiracy theories, you just can't satisfy these people. They will simply say that NASA and the Indian space agency are in cahoots and they will dismiss it.

There's one problem... What do you do about the refrigerator in the summer? Power goes out then as well.
I have a generator and it is hardwired into the house circuits. I can operate the furnace, refrigerator and most of the lights as well some small appliances.
