    Wasn't it a beacon from the alien ship that made "mother" redirect Nostromo to that planet? Only later did mother analyze that it was a warning beacon.

    If the company had known about it, they would have sent a specialized team there instead of diverting a freighter.

    Just like you get Google by default on the Safari search bar on Mac. Whereas on IE8, you can easily change it to whatever by a simple click, on Safari there is no such option.

    At least IE allows you to easily change the search engine. It even fucking asks you if you want to do so upon initial use.
    Safari on Mac does not allow you to use anything but Google.

    Yes, yes, I know you can type the name "bing.com" on the address bar, but it is more intuitive to just use the search box which is forever fixed to Google and can't be changed without using 3rd party tools.

    DRM is there only to play stuff that has DRM in it. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to play that stuff. Contrary to the popular theme in Slashdot, DRM is not there as a conspiracy to mangle and degrade your media playback. As stupid and evil as you might think MS is, this still wouldn't make any sense.

    Probably because:
    1. You can take your music from iTunes and load it up into any number of programs. If you have DRM'ed tracks, then no, but that isn't exactly a secret.
    2. There will doubtlessly be other ways to sync your music with the Pre.
    3. Why in the hell is Apple obligated to let other players use their software? Palm can make their own software and people can use that instead. You can still get your music onto your Pre without Apple's software. Simple.
    Those crying monopoly really aren't thinking about this.

    It runs on Mac but don't expect to really learn a language with this. I've gone through all levels in Rosetta Stone (French). It doesn't go beyond the very basic level. Does introduce you to the proper accent.

    I actually learned French from Ollendorff's book published in 1851! Amazing why his method which is so effective isn't followed in any other language books that I've seen. I think he also has a book on Spanish. Check it out on Google books and a hard copy is also available on Amazon.

    Actually, I meant to say "Still better THAN". If you mean one can set a default "search engine" on Safari, actually on the Mac you can't unless you use 3rd party tools. There is no obvious way to change the search engine, which is Google by default.

    Yes, their PSP, PS3 interface is pretty slick. I recently replaced an old Sony camera (absolutely no complaints, fool proof, never had to open the manual, etc.) with their latest incarnation (DSC-T500). The user interface on this one is, in one word "horrendous". Didn't seem from the same company.

    Considering that no other search engine has given us what Google has been giving us and only MS catching up to them is actually a major advance. And the fact that if MS improves further, they could actually be a competition to Google is even more of an advance.

    And kindly elaborate on exactly what Apple gave us 10 years ago!! Windows 95 pretty much blew them away at that time.

    I have been using Bing for the last few weeks and comparing with Google by running the same queries on both.

    At it's launch, there was considerable difference in the results of the two (Google giving far more relevant results). But Bing has been rapidly improving and now I get pretty much identical results from both.

    Bing is a huge improvement over Yahoo at least for general queries.

    It's a pity that Safari (at least on Mac) doesn't allow any other search engine except Google. That is just plain mean.

    Keyloggers don't work on ATMs. The ATM's keypad is a "secure keypad". There is a DES chip built into the keypad. When the ATM software calls for PIN entry, the PIN is encrypted in DES and then given to the software.

    However, if you compromise the ATM application software, then obviously anything is possible.

    As per the article, this wasn't the case and any PIN information captured by the malware would have been encrypted (at least DES or even 3DES).

    Why not simply introduce a delay after each unsuccessful password (as many systems do) instead of a lockout after n attempts? Wouldn't this avoid any DOS and stump any brute force attempt?

    Kudos to Apple for creating a cult of "Steve Jobs Nut Huggers" that will absolutely stifle any legitimate gripe that the rest of the world might have.

    I regularly fly business class internationally. In my experience of flying mostly airlines from Asia, there is always a business class in long haul routes. On shorter distances, they usually eliminate the first class and have only a business class.
    And the service is excellent even in economy as compared to US carriers.

    But I am very suspicious of these statistics. For one, I can't find the exact formula they're using. I think they must be using something like "distance travelled divided by number of deaths". Which IMO is not a good measure when comparing with road travel. And how do they come up with "1 in 5000" chance of dying in a car accident. Doesn't this also imply that every one in 5000 motorists will have a fatal accident?

    A better measure would be number of flights divided by crashes. Or number of hours flying divided by crashes.
