Do some DAoC. There are big storied questlines, but for me, the majority of the experience is just the backstory and lore of each realm, and feeling like a part of it. The leveling is a bit of a grind, but they're about to release a major patch to make the game MUCH more newbie-friendly. But the game is not PvE-centric. necessary gear items are attainable both through PvE or PvP.

The purpose is the RvR, which is 3-faction PvP. There are no pre-arranged scenarios, it is all open world. Whatever the odds are, those are the odds: there are no handicaps. The PvP is very tactical, and skill matters more than gear (though gear does matter). PvE is simple, you can reach max level in a day or two doing quests in the battlegrounds. Likewise, you can actually level from PvP in the battlegrounds.

The PvP is highly engaging in and of itself, but if you're looking to further your realm, you can assist in capturing keeps from the enemy and defending your own.

It just turned 10 years old this week, and it shows a bit. The game started as an MUD and a graphical client was added later (during the game's development), so it's very different from modern MMOs. It is often considered to have the best PvP of an MMO to date. It's truly a gem though. There's a two-week free trial. If you are interested, shoot me an email, I can show you the ropes.

  19. MMOs Ruined me on Weak Typing — the Lost Art of the Keyboard · · Score: 1

I use a very mouse-oriented keyboard style that helps much in games with text-chat and mouse control.

I use my left hand like normal touch typing. But for me right hand, everything is done with the index finger. I have no idea what my WPM is. My buddy is a very proficient touch-typist, and I'm not as fast as him, but I am faster than most people I know. I'm never wanting for more speed. I can type about as fast as I can think of what to type.

The purpose here being that I can quickly take my hand off the mouse and not have to worry about repositioning my right hand, I just fling it over and get going.

However, as nice as that is for games and message boards, it limits my effectiveness when using word processors or coding. I can type using the traditional home rows, but I have to explicitly restrain my index finger, and as a result type very slowly =\

Yes they did, and yes Mythic sucks. But they've done a lot of work since then, though, and realm balance is much better. Though, live servers are a different beast than the game was back in those days. I'd suggest the freeshard Uthgard for an old player such as yourself. It's like DAoC from 2003. They stripped all the expansion content except for those classes you hate, but those classes are castrated and not a threat.

  24. Re:Many have moved to Rift on World of Warcraft Finally Loses Subscribers · · Score: 1

Try DAoC. It's very old school, but imho that is something to brag about, as modern games all feel like WoW. The leveling grind is partically non-existent at the moment, as you can level extremely fast from a set of repeatable quests in the Battlegrounds from 10-40 (level cap is 50). You can fight enemy players near your level at any level, or level safely in PvE only areas for your Realm. It's not particularly time-consuming to gear out a character, and the RvR is very good. Having 3 factions is an absolute necessity for fun team-based PvP, as two can temporarily team up if the numbers are skewed heavily one way.

It's not perfect, the UI is rough and old, but the PvP is considerably more rewarding to players that like to learn and improve.
