As they specifically pointed out in the article, the kind of interoperability they're talking about isn't an "all in one" IM solution, which still requires you to create multiple accounts for each IM vendor. Instead, they mean allowing users from other networks to communicate directly with AIM users. So, you have a Yahoo account and I have AIM, you can add me directly as a contact, and msg me without signing up for AIM.

Although your post, and others, are pointing out that AOL has been hostile to programs like gaim, Imici, Jabber, Trillian, etc., I believe that this is different from what AOL is being mandated to do. Now, granted, AOL should be nicer to all of these programs that provide us with at least the possibility of using other clients, but unfortunately it doesn't sound like that's something that's being made required of them.

Although other programs may have it, this is the only I've seen that gives you an executable to launch itself when someone specifically invokes Notepad instead of honoring your .txt or whatever file association. Easy instructions are in notepad.zip on their downloads page.

Yes, but even hard core fans have friends and relatives who are not. And it's harder to convince them to watch something along with you that frequently has a confusing plot if they also have to bother reading subtitles. And with good voice acting, dubbing can actually enhance the movie.

Just this past weekend, I actually convinced my gf into watching Princess Mononoke with me, and she actually enjoyed it. One of the things she enjoyed about it was recognizing the good voice acting of well-known actors both of us know. Understanding what the characters are saying, instead of having to read along, can add quite a bit to the enjoyment of a movie.

However, I'm clearly not enough of a fan to know that there has been a movie made, or that there were even plans of dubbing it and bringing it over the US. Since I'm sure there are bigger fans out there, does anyone have more info about when this was made, and if it's available on DVD? If not, when is it going to be? I've had no reason to buy the series on DVD since it's on weekly, but the movie I might actually buy.

How does .NET prevent you from using a good text editor and command line tools? All the files, including forms, code, resource, and project files are simple text/XML files. That means that you can use any text editor, then use the command line compilation tools, which are vbc for VB.NET, cs for C#, etc. And as others above have pointed out, C# has been approved by a standards body, so unlike Samba, there are not going to be issues of trying to integrate with something the vendor (MS) does not necessarily want you integrating with.

While I won't go as far as the other person who replied to this post, you are indeed somewhat misguided. Although not buying online is perhaps the only 100% solution, akin to abstinence for some people, the use of single-card credit card numbers has made me feel significantly safer about purchasing items online, which I do often.

Sites that I trust (big vendors with reputable histories) get my real credit card number, so that I can buy things instantly from them, but that's only a select few. All of the rest get single-use numbers that are no good for any transactions but that one. Both Visa and Discover support this technology - Visa's version is ShopSafe, while Discover's is Discover Deskshop, both of which are free tools.

Although I buy things frequently, my buying patterns have so far never resulted in my cc info being compromised, and I hope to keep it that way. The biggest scare I ever got was when Egghead admitted to having had cc's stolen, if anyone remembers that story. But mine must not have been one of the ones that they got.

I have made a business case argument to our lead architect, and he has come to see things my way, by seeing the usefulness of the tool. I don't see how you can say that a programmer who'd rather be at his desk coding instead of going across the floor or to a different floor to discuss an issue, is lazier.

As for the phone, I specifically knew someone was going to bring it up, which is why I thought I already addressed it. As a coder, I like silence or music when I'm in the zone, not hearing phone conversations from every cube next to me, of which I only hear one side, and which are really distracting. Using IM instead of phone for quick questions and conversations is more convenient for both the programmer and co-workers around him or her, who get to benefit from the thoughtfulness.

You might call not wanting to punch in extensions, wait for ringtones, and then hanging up after going to voicemail b/c the person is not there, laziness, but I prefer to think of double-clicking someone's name in my list and typing a message as efficiency.

  16. Re:usefullness? on Blocking Instant Messengers? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I completely agree that instant messaging has legitimate business uses - as a programmer, one of the first questions I ask new team members is what their IM name is. I have a strong dislike for system administrators like the submitter of the question, who seek to block things because everything must be under their control, instead of trying to determine what IM is being used for, perhaps by asking the users.

Just like the Web, or email, IM can be used for personal use - surprise!! That's why you set policies in the workplace. But my team uses it for quick conversations without leaving each other's desks. Like email, it's asynchronous, except the conversation flow is much more natural, instead of the >>>>>> indentation of emails that have been replied back and forth too many times.

IM is also the best indicator of whether someone is there - with email, you have no idea. You may go to a different floor, just to find out the person you needed to see has stepped out, and calling them on the phone every time is obnoxious. IM allows you to have different simultaneous conversations. The advantages go on and on.

As for Microsoft integrating it into the next Office suite, the above poster is partially right. Microsoft has already recognized that businesses have a place for IM and has added the Exchange 2000 Instant Messaging Service in their latest email server.

  18. Excellent Article on CDs or not? An interesting take on Key2Audio · · Score: 4, Informative

I'm surprised there are not more comments about this article on here, as it is very very interesting. Perhaps it is its length that has put people off.

I think the biggest thing mentioned that I have not heard expressed before is that these cds really _do_ conform to the standards of multisession cds. This is because they have to in order to trick the computer into reading what it thinks is going to be an invalid data track, which in turn is not formatted properly at all. This still conforms to the standard, however, since there is no specification as to what the data track must contain, simply that it identifies itself as one, which this one does. So, the data track can store anything, and in this case stores garbage. I think this definitely opens up Sony and anyone else using Key2Audio to lawsuits. Overall, I think it's at least somewhat funny that these really are "Enhanced CDs", just that they're enhanced to hurt your computer.

He also defends Apple's role in this very convincingly. Apple has gotten a lot of flack over this, but as he points out, this has happened many times in the past with various cd drives and formats. There are still cdroms out there that cannot handle multisession cds at all, or those that cannot read CDRWs. Now of course Apple could've had the OS handle the whole thing a little bit more gracefully, but could they have counted on every possible thing that a cd-type media is going to contain ever in the future? Certainly no, and certainly not having a garbage data track that is specifically meant to not fit with what a pc maker would count on. So I think as long as they issue a patch for this, they're not the bad guy at all here.

My thoughts are that consumers should continue to vote with their wallets. Realistically, sales for popular albums will not be hurt by this, but, if enough of us complain to stores, perhaps they'll do something. I listen to cds at work on my computer as I work (doing so now) and the first time I get one of these, I'm complaining my head off to Best Buy or whoever. If enough of us do so, perhaps they'll start putting them in a separate section or ask the labels to start identifying them more clearly, and then more people will be weary of getting them.
