    Bullshit. Some are tree hugger that pair with Republicans in their degree of delusion, but others understand that mass production of weapon grade uranium is very likely to become a factual problem. Unlike engineers who many times are highly functional autistics, people with some social skill understand that opportunity and avaiability make power hungry people exploit any weapon at their disposal.

    So the best some engineer can do is find another way to obtain energy without breeder reactors , engineers better side with the peaceful good of the masses because they're considered highly skilled labor, but still LABOR without any governing skill or ability..intelligent vulgus, so to say.

    1* Read a lot more, at least 15-20 books an year
    2* Develop a taste for knowledge , distate for ignorance
    3* Don't hate ignorant people, everybody is always ignorant, Einstein and you too
    4* Learn about spiritual values and forget religions, they're pernicious
    5* Don't judge people only by their degree. Actually, stop judging people, do better then them.

    And as a last observation, it's not only teacher fault or student fault, it's society as
    a whole. If one rewards remaining in ignorance, people will remain in ignorance expect very
    few who naturally love to know and to do.

    If people had half a notion of how creative accounting made them a lot poorer....

    Ratios don't mean much. You could have 100 teachers for 100 students with an 1:1 ratio , but if the 100 teachers aren't that good you'll have 100 not that good students. Also, substitute public with private and you'll see you'll also pay more :) but not necessarily have a better service.

    Why get a C, when you can outsource some superior work, get a better grade, and learn more in the process?

    You're talking about reverse engineering the code , learning the way the programmer used ? Yeah it does you good, but it's not the same as taking the problem and approaching, if necessary by trial and error, an acceptable solution. It's called "hard working" and yeah it would be nice if one could outsource it forever without consequences..but setting cost aside, the first casuality is your brain.

    That said, I agree that there are professors that shouldn't teach, assignments that are pure manure and underrated resources. Yet that doesn't excuse cheaters.

    Any company will be as ethical or unethical as the persons who run it , decide for it. They rarely are the majority of stockholders..too divided and too interested into dividends and returns.

    If working for the enrichment of masses becomes more profiteable or more easy, less risky then just exploiting them for a penny, IF that happens profiteers will strive to enrich the masses.

    Gotta make cost of exploitation and cost of passing costs to masses very very high.

    You say it's not censorship because he still can write whatever he wants somewhere else ; necessarily you think that censorship is censorship only when one can't absolutely write anywhere anything at anytime.

    Guess what ? You'll never have that censorship, because not even governments can enforce that without throwing somebody into jail ..and even so I have no doubt somebody managed to write from jail.

    Unfortunately the pages went down and I can't find the text, but let's hypotize he said anything and everything about a professor BUT he didn't name him/her.

    Given that he didn't name the professors, this can't count as defamation. He reasonably expected people to understand who he was talking about and his criticism, no matter how harsh and infantile and no matter how appropriate and mature, was censored and harshly punished mafia-style..you don't badtalk me or no matter how professional and a good doctor you are you're going to be OH so in trouble !

    If he can't be trusted to keep comments about an academic superior and his fellow peers professional, how can he be trusted to keep comments about future patients confidential and professional as well?

    This is complete nonsense ; it doesn't make logical sense as one can't derive future behavior from past behavior, you're just making another reasonable hypothesis but it's not a -given- there's no guarantee he'll either please or disappoint you in the future. It also doesn't make sense because he certainly could demean his own clients , but that would be stupid as he would lose their money. If he is stupid, so much better for his competitors who aren't.

    There are no civil rights being broken here... just a student needing to figure out whether mouthing off about his peers and professional superiors is more important than learning what it takes to join his chosen profession.

    Yeah it doesn't require studying or being a good, just learn that shutting the fuck up is the way to go..this way one learn that maybe all the errors can be hidden, I cover your back You cover my back. Some people is so busy trying to respect make-believes ethical codes they no loger can tell when they're behaving unethically. It's all about the IMAGE, right ? It's not about taking care of sick people.

    Other businesses will probably choose not to see the taxation because

    * it have an almost insignificant financial and economic impact unless you use in hundred thousands
    * it can always be passed down to consumers (consumers pay for it)

    An alternative cost would be fighting in courts or lobbying for exemptions. Both are expensive propositions so it will probably remain a secondary if not nonexistant issues ; that's expecially true for small business which can only suffer for this, something lobbying corps may appreciate.

    There is a possibility that Australia may follow in Canada's footsteps, and levy a tax on other things to make up for "lost" revenues. For instance, a tax could be levied on MP3 players or blank recordable CDs which could then be used to supplement the cash flow

    WHAT ? A TAX to supplement company profits ? The man enjoyed WAY WAY too much Forster beer, I wonder with which money did he pay ! Did he realize that a tax/levy on media/mp3s players/whatnot

    1) assumes all users are necessarily using the media for illegal purposes (innocent until guilty ?)
    2) gives a solid constant stream of profit to compensate from "loss" of revenues no one can quantify, simply because one can only extimate loss of revenues from potential loss of sale. It's like saying "I may lose one billion dollar I don't have, so gimme that one billion dollar even if you didn't take it, nobody took it because that billion doesn't exist !"

    It's absurd: it may appear legal but it's a state legalized, corporate mandated SCAM.

    Rather a tragedy, but you're correct when you say private enterprises (of any kind and type) are very likely to benefit when somebody blames the government for the enterprise errors..it's an efficient distraction and promotion of corporativism, which isn't but modernized feudalism.

    And masses were the ones doing all the labor during feudalism..they didn't see much if anything of all the value they produced. They also took almost all the risks, but were so bitterly divided they didn't help themselves much..also because that could have made them understand they were more powerful then the lords and start a riot..so socializations wasn't encouraged.

    And when some implementation of communism was offered them, they didn't realize it was just the same old boss with a new face and some new methods. Now communism is gone, but the boss remains the same old same old..except this time the opposition is still silent.

    Yeah you're blown away, without any doubt.

    Market doesn't work, market doesn't eat, market doesn't do crap except market exist only as an abstact entity, a theoretical construct.

    Techies, geeks, hackers, whatever label .. it is knowledgable skilled people that do the fixing !
    Some of them are motivated primarily by money and secondarily by showing the company they're good at
    resolving upcoming problem...in hope somebody will notice when it's firing time again..but it's just daydreaming. Others, a minority, do the fixing for fixing shake..because they like to see tight well working system and like to work on them.

    Also free market theory wouldn't allow an entity such as Google to exist but for a very short amount of time as competitors would enter google market to compensate and get a cut of Google extraprofits. As a matter of FACT and not theoretical model this hasn't happened yet (and google wasn't invented yesterday) neither is it going to happen quickly as there are some strong barriers to entry in this market.

    So please don't give the freemarket bullcrap credit when credit is due to WORKERS, techies who are those who sustain most if not all of the competition stress and problems, yet receive dimes and see their future more uncertain then it ever was.

    Certainly Google staff is to be praised for quickfixing potentially serious problems

    Look at who's pointing at hypocrisy ! Indeed there are some if not many harsh critics of Microsoft in here, some of them up to irrational criticisms a.k.a. Microsoft Bashers , but you my dear belong to their own category of those who hastly criticize those who criticize. Pot, meet kettle.

    Some people on Slashdot don't give a flying about what a microsoft employee would have done ; others would have irrationally rejoiced as if working for Microsoft on some pretty tame project necessarily implied having the same agenda as Microsoft, part of which is monopolistic and despicable. Others would have talked in support of a single microsoft employee being screwed by Microsoft itself.

    So if you want to categorize most of people on Slashdot, try to make some diversifing distinction or enter a subset of the same group you're criticizing.

    AS for the fact that the guy probably shouldn't have been awarded a patent, I completely agree on the statement that a patent (granting a legal monopoly) for a generic wearable device capable of playing music would be absurd and would have a chilling effect on production and innovation ; as a remedy there could be different , less restrictive patents protecting one particular implementation of a concept , which would reward the inventor for sharing his ideas with others.

    But there's another big problem that overshadows many others : even if we somehow made the patent system and similar "idea monopolies" system effectively award to the one who has the MERIT....that still wouldn't help the person WIN in court if not after lengthy expensive legal battles with rich people.

    If you can't defend the patent with enough money...you don't own one. So what's the whole point of the patenting system if it's not enough to protect from exploitation at the expense of the author(s) ? In other words if the rule of law often favours the one with the most money or let them escape with a little slap on the wrist...what's the point of inventing and innovating ? What's the point of respecting the patents ?

    Oh wait, but if you're a comparatively little guy and you screw up a patent willy nilly..good luck.

    Competition in public infrastructure ? In my country the freeway was built with public money and they still charged for its use which was OK for the majority of population who didn't drive but during season holidays.

    Now the freeway exploitation and maintenance have been privatized to some very big private group and the net result so far is

    1* the charges have been increased significantly expecially for frequent travelers it's becoming unbearable
    2* the maintenance went downhill because no competition can be introduced ! What do you compete with, airplanes , railroads ? Nope no sir roads market isn't entered by anybody because it would require trillions of investment and nobody wants to do that when a competitior is already present
    3* rich richies are becoming richer and more people then before are getting the shaft

    Privatization is like God, if you just blindly believe it's better then public ownership then fuck off already, believe whatever you want but DON'T bring me down in the misery one stupidly can choose just because he heard it's good !

    * Save on cd manufacturing, shipping cost

    It's worth noticing that when a technology can save any company money it becomes the hot thing, even if it radiates you into horrendous death. BUT when the technology empowers and lessens the dependecy of the consumer then it's the spawn of satan , a kid corruptor and a terrorist tool.

    I guess the reason one couldn't turn off the clock was that the clock needed to be powered to maintain accurate time or timing at all. This was needed to quickly program a VCR so that it could record at a set time ; imagine needing to reprogram VCR each time, tell it what time is it and at what time it should start and stop recording.

    That would be very inconvenient. Plus another guy mentioned constant power-on helps couch potatoes turn on with a remote, which they like.

    Stop blaming engineers for all you asked for and you got , ok ? Blame management and marketing, it's their fault.

    What if competition between private companies doesn't occour ? Remember that certain capital investments (sunk costs) effectively constitute a financial barrier to entry or a disincentive to compete ; also, what if they simply don't want to compete and are happy with their current schemes or with some pro-forma competition ?

    Additionally competition mostly benefits the third non competing party, which often is the consumer. Many companies have realized that and are pushing workers/consumers against each other to obtain the same effects, only this time favoring companies ; this is one of the reasons behind the campaigns against unions or other worker organization attempts.

    Indeed, normally people like to eat well, have a good healthcare and a good pension , a decent house in which to live and generally like to enjoy the advancement of technology without paying premium prices for it forever, as if it always was a just-discovered technology.

    So companies have to understand their profits and extraprofits are an extra privilege people are graciously letting them have to have them invent new technology. So if they start , as they have, to undermine our welfare by pretending to obtain profit at our expense ..we'll soon start undermine their extraprofit and welfare , which is only fair.
