It's a really good write up. I love how people instantly try to vilify apple for it's decision, not to allow third party background apps when a majority of Apples own apps for the iPhone do not use background processing. Perhaps simply it's a resources issue. Battery is the resource that everyone thinks of first, but like any small computer system the iPhone has limited CPU and RAM, push those and you are going to kill the battery even faster.
I would also like to see Ubi-Soft and the actual developers of the game Monolith Productions actually work with companies that will do the Macintosh and Linux development so we don't run into the whole deal where one platform is left behind or end up not even having the ability to play with the windows users. If you choose Linux or Mac, I would seriously suggest contacting Monolith and voicing your opinion.
You don't have to loose sharing capability when updating iTunes to 4.0.1 just use this handy little utility. 401(ok) I have several friends that have found this quite helpful. Enjoy an updated Mac.
Disregarding the Apple ROM NewWorld or OldWorld, the support can be added to OS X for the various chipsets found on a pegasos board. There is a widely used project XPostFacto which includes specifically developed kernel modules to support OldWorld hardware will allow one to install and run OS X on an OldWorld machine. So I'm sure similar methods could be used to support the chipsets on the pegasos boards.
I know this is practically flamebait here but, look at it from this perspective. Out of all the MP3 players out there, which platform did they work for first? That's right, you got it, more than likely Windows. So Apple comes out with the iPod and everyone whines and complains that the small shiney new toy doesn't play well with windows. Yeah I'm sure that's Apple Computers number one priority, right along with handing out iMovie, iDVD, iTunes and now iPhoto to windows users too. So you are all whining because Apple is playing favorites for the people who actually BUY their computers?
Windows users, usually get everything in the computer industry first with the exception Apple stuff, and open source and there are reasons for this. Windows users make up the largest share of the consumer computer industry, so they have all the deals to get everything for windows first becuase that's where the majority of the money will be made for the companies that make that hardware/software/printer/scanner/whatever.
So you windows users are going to complain when the other team has something that some of you think is better that they aren't being fair? I'm sure some company will make a knock off for you soon enough.
Well a friend and I got the data off the disc it was fairly simple. Linux kernel 2.4.7 and cdparanoia what a beautiful combination. 2.4.8 and 2.4.10 have problems with scsi generic at leat on ppc or with my U160 card, or it could be my yamaha cdrw drive. Who knows But at least there is way.. the will is already there.
Well It seems that I have picked up a copy protected CD despite all my intentons not to do so. But it's not from Sony, Universal, or Atlantic... it's from a small european label, dependent records (be sure to use the fish for the guestbook). And from teh sounds of their president in his release is that lots of other european labels are starting to use copy protection as well. He even gave us the type of copy protection used... Cactus Data Shield from a company called midbar. So if the little guys are using it, and the big guys are using it well... I know I will be purchasing less music.

Amazon and PayPal both are collecting the money in a fund that will be sent to the Red Cross. This will also generate quite a tax break for both of them when they do submit their collections. If our country goes to war our government will need a return of funds, not two parties dodging out on taxes, the donator for their contribution, and -insert corp taking collection here-...
Please I urge people to donate directly to the red cross... Their servers may be getting hit pretty hard and it may take some time... like the lines for dontating blood right now. But give the medicine (money) to the horse that needs it directly.

NATO showing their backing and various european and asian governments showing support, this is not a big suprise. It should be expected, the World Trade Center in NY was home to offices of many international finance corporations. There is not a much better way to hurt the world economy that swiftly.
The government should use mob tactics, take 25% off the top of Microsoft profits, so the Supreme court judges can give themselves a pay raise for having to deal with all this BS in the first place. So we have even more to complain about!

I'll second that magical syncing of the PPC patches into the offical tree. You'll find my fuel for that below. I would say that the info in the comments is very informative including the kernel traffic stuff, and I would say that Alan Cox more than likly had something to do with this and probably keeps his tree updated as suggested.

My whole point with writing the article in the first place was that It has been since 2.2.17 since I have been able to compile a kernel from the offical source tree, and that is an awful long time to wait for the "all new and improved" stuff in the 2.4.X tree. Most LinuxPPC users are left to the precompiled kernels that their distro sets out for them. The acceptance issue comes into play here where I belive man PPC linux users would like to know that they aren't being left out in the cold by the community as a whole, and have to rely on just a few solid resouces out there. It's Linux, and I'll pull a Shakespeare here i386 or PPC, what's in a processor/name?
Project axed, but he OS is sort of still out there, check any NT Workstation 4.0 CD, there's a "Ppc" arch directory. Not that I know if it even functions, or even if I care, I'm not a winfreak, that's why I went with PPC in the first place.
I just think Wired is completely trash, spreading rumors as fact. Might as well change their name to "Weekly World Wired". Anyway, below is the mail I just wrote them after seeing some of the crap in that article.
Subject: Vaporware 2000: Missing Inaction

Vapor, perhaps you need to define what you mean as vaporware... two of the "top ten" are in beta release. Linux 2.4 test kernels have been around for at least the last 3-4 months. Several Linux distribution houses have shipped 2.4 test kernels with their latest releases. Heck, if you guys have a linux box sitting around or one of your staff go
download one, if not from the distributions website, then from http://www.kernel.org.
Next is MacOS X, With a few developer previews seeded out, and the public beta that you can order right off of Apple's online store http://store.apple.com yeah I'd call this a vapor, if I were a ghostbuster!
This is completely what I'd expect from your organization. Completely baseless information. Loved that cover of the Apple logo bound with
barbed wire, predicting the downfall of Apple computer how long has that been? Wired, the supermarket trash news magazine for geeks!
Don't take my word for it, get a book, check it out.
Say I get one of these units and install it in my Knight Industries 2000 (I call it K.I.T.T. for short). And this is one of thos new fangled "inteligent" cars of the future. It talks to me, orders pizza for me, and even berat's up bad guys. But I digress, if I install one of these players into K.I.T.T. and he finds a way to get on the internet and download "And Justice For All", is Metallica going to sue me or my car?
Every time I see an article from Jon Katz, I am filled with resentment. I feel like we, the so-called geek community (I am even ashamed to call it that) are placed behind glass and shown off to the rest of the world by him. Like a zoo, with Katz as the zoo tour guide.
Do you feel like a monkey, well as much squaking and squallering that has been going on about this, maybe some of us ought to? What ever Mr. Katz's roll is in this he has the ability to use his influence to shed some light on the topic, including how the "geeks" feel about it. Well now it's showtime, now we can swing on our little branches and hope that our random shrieks can be heard and if heard, understood. Another option would be to use this to our advantage, the phrase "steal the spotlight" didn't come from two bit crooks, MPAA aside. Now wouldn't be beneficial if we stood up, walked erect and became something more than idle entertainment for the masses, if that's what you feel we are. Again, do you feel like a monkey?
Now I seriously resent this type of attitude displayed in the previous post. Come on, do geeks need to jump on the "victim" bandwagon too? I have been following the events since Littleton, when the "witch hunt" began to find out why our beautiful and sparkly clean nation's kids were all of the sudden shooting each other? At that point it wasn't news, was it just the sub-urbanites trying to be hip and pick up on what the inner city kids have been doing for the last few years? Blah, no, there's always a reason, but this wasn't by far something new.
So let's blame the media, the music, the video games, TV, movies... need I go on? I feel I do. I was one of these kids when I was in High School; I certainly wouldn't have classified myself as a geek those years ago. I listened to the questionable music, I wasn't part of the "in" crowd. So I identify with these kids. I personally represented the musical outfit KMFDM previous to the Littleton shootings, I still represent them as MDFMK. When I noticed that they were being attacked for how one of those children had interpeted lyrics from one of their songs and had displayed them on the web for all to see, I was outraged on a whole social level, parents don't let the media raise your children, teach your children to raise the media.
KMFDM had even spoke out about this on their offical home page. Even before that, if you anyone had cared to dig to find out how KMFDM had felt about such social issues as these.
A person with a problem, I believe there is no such thing, as a person with a problem. If there is a problem, it's a problem with the system. The system of home and family, of school and community. KMFDM "The Problem" - 1993
Now musicians all over are up in arms about this, In the last 3 months I've purchased more music that has been inspired by the Littleton and Colombine incidents. So just to restate, take example from the musicians, turn the light on yourself and say something, don't just chatter like a monkey.
There's a tendency today to absolve individuals from moral responsibility and treat them as victims of social circumstance. You buy that, you pay with your soul. It's not men who limit women, it's not straights who limit gays, it's not whites who limit blacks. What limits people is lack of character. What limits people is that they don't have the nerve or imagination to star in their own fucking movie, let alone direct it.
Seven-Eleven selling PS2's? I could see that, Japanese car dealerships sold the Sega Dreamcast, and would use them as incentives to sell cars! I don't remember the specific dalership, but I don't think that's important.
I could see them selling the things out of vending machines, at least the games. That stuff is hotter than smack is in this country, and it's legal.
