Nonsense. It's always cheaper to pay your own way. If you are "getting something for free" through an insurance company then they are necessarily going to want their cut. ANY payment is going to have it's own transaction overhead and THAT is not cheap.
$200 is still a trivial amount for an insurance claim and something that anyone with a lick of sense or mathematical savvy should avoid.
Insurance rates have been climbing like crazy over the last 10 years and they were already insane in some places even before that. If you are in a major technology nexus, the rates are likely especially gruesome.
Also quite often the rate you see as a mere employee is just PART of the total cost.
The idea of liberating us from our employers sound nice. I just don't believe for a minute that the ACA is actually going to achieve that.
The status quo will continue regardless of what that is in your particular jurisdiction (individual insurance feasible or not).
All true. These kinds of people simply don't care. They will actively chase off anyone that stands as a voice of reason. They will just accuse you of being an industry shill.
They don't want reality getting in the way of their politics.
Yes. Re-ripping my media hoard would suck. This applies equally well to my music as it would to my video. It's simply not something I want to have to do again. The overhead of a 2nd array is worth the potential bother.
In a couple years it won't even be an issue and it will be laughable that anyone ever thought it was.
On the one hand you've mentioned Netflix which is cool in some ways but has it's own limitations. On the other hand, you've have mentioned things other than Netflix that are all clearly inferior and aren't even worth mentioning in the same counter argument.
The first one completely negates the others.
On the other hand Netflix has limitations on responsiveness and selection as well as quality. At best, the Netflix version of something will be somewhat inferior. That's assuming it's even available. Then there's the whole network problem (which also impacts quality).
You laugh but I had an opportunity of this sort just last night.
It's nice to have all the things you like or are likely to want at your fingertips. It's also nice not needing to worry about some snafu with Amazon, or Netflix, or Comcast, or TWC buggering the whole thing.
Trailer trash can try to save money by streaming things.I would rather own them and user them under my own terms.
If you've already got one large array then you are already by definition half way there. If you then decide not to go the rest of the way then you are at the same time being both extravagant and a cheap bastard. It's a wonderfully stupid paradox.
If you've got one then you should get the 2nd one or not bother with the first one to begin with.
Also, one of the listed examples was "farm subsidies". That is not something that can be assumed to be a "check to a person". A lot of large farms are corporate. So farm subsidies in some cases are just corporate welfare.
Perhaps this "checks to people" idea assumes that corporations are people too.
> Seriously. Like when someone smashes a window, breaks into your house and murders your family. What were you expecting when you don't put bars over your windows?
You probably think you're funny but those remarks are very reasonable in certain neighborhoods.
> The difference between "idiot" and "at fault" is huge.
It depends on the environment. In some environments, you will be punished for leaving your valuables unsecured. It is considered bad policy to tolerate idiots that invite thieves.
The meat space equivalent of what this idiot journalist does is illegal in some jurisdictions.
I would be more worried about irrigation versus natural water sources. Also there's the problem that water is not actually destroyed in the process of agriculture. It is used and reused and reused again. Although there is the problem of water contamination. That doesn't go away if you trade beef for beans.
These statistics really don't address sustainability at all.
It's really a quite infantile argument not worthy of a tech site like Slashdot.
The idea that more "cosmopolitan" city is going to have less of a commute is just nonsense. You will just be dealing with trains run on someone else's schedule versus driving yourself. Concentrating yourself into an overpriced sardine can is not necessarily going to positively impact the "time lost" aspect of the job.
Chances are that cutthroat competition from people that love to live in the office will wipe out any direct fiscal advantage of a car free commute.
It's not just about the balance sheet. It's also about the local culture and how well you personally fit into that.
> It hasn't been called "Mac OS" for about a decade now. It's OS X.
So fucking what? I'm not participating in Apple's asshattery here. They can fool an idiot like you into helping to hijack other people's trademarks but I'm not participating.
Support is support then. If you have to do a lot of hand holding for them anyways, then you might as well do it with whatever YOU the support person is most comfortable with.
Unix has the advantage that it can be remotely supported through a 2400 baud dial-up connection.
Computers are all about automation. If you don't know how to automate things and don't WANT to know how to automate things then I would seriously doubt your ability to administer anything.
>> You're saying they should just hand over the keys to anybody who calls claiming "grandma died"? > > Yep. That sounds like a working security model.
There are these things called legal documents. They establish ownership of personal property and can allow for transfer of such property. Been like this for centuries. Millenia even.
It is when compared to 10TB of local storage.

Stuff isn't free.

Then you probably have no clue whatsoever.

Same goes for the EPA BTW.

Yes. No one needs silly things like property rights anyways.

...if only it was going to infastructure, pork projects, and transport.
Our roads and bridges are crumbling. Some good old fashioned pork projects could be really helpful right about now.
Social Security is probably not the real problem. Congress has been raiding Social Security like a piggy bank since at least the time of Reagan.

Also not sure what this is doing on Slashdot...
> Really, all you have to do is kick the X11 and all the craziness from the window managers
SteamOS is doing nothing of the sort. It's little moe more than a bespoke version of Debian. It is essentially SteamBuntu.
> Seriously. Like when someone smashes a window, breaks into your house and murders your family. What were you expecting when you don't put bars over your windows?

You're going to have to treat it regardless. The cost is the same either way.
Banning the consumption of meat will not eliminate agricultural runoff or biological contaminants that have nothing to do with agriculture at all.

It's simply not technical enough.

Emails laden with powerpoint? For a granny?
Are you kidding?
If anything, that's the best argument right there to dump Windows in general.
Run something else. ANYTHING else. Just run. Run quickly.

Why? Because an unsupported operating system from Microsoft is a security problem.
Computers are all about automation. If you don't know how to automate things and don't WANT to know how to automate things then I would seriously doubt your ability to administer anything.
> Cut the anti-capitalist crap.
Great. So now if you dare to criticize the almighty corporations you are an "anti-capitalist". Just great.
You should reserve yourself a space in Cooks servants quarters. Get a jump on this new guilded age you're trying to build for the rest of us.
