  1. Quake multiplayer & the need for a grappling h on What Games Have Actually Affected You? · · Score: 1

When Quake multiplayer came out I was ridiculously addicted. I was about 16 at the time, therefore in high school and had no real obligations. I remember many many nights of playing CTF online with a modem (and of course cursing the very few LPB's who had broadband) until the wee hours of the morning.

Probably somewhat due to sleep deprivation, but still an effect of the game, I would hear quake sound effects around me all the time. I always thought I'd heard someone grapple to the ceiling above me or jump into water nearby, etc. I can remember all the times I just subconciously thought about switching to rocket launcher, etc and blasting whatever (whomever) it was that was pissing me off, or just for good clean fun.

And then there was the grappling hook... I can't count the number of times I just thought I could or wanted to use it in real life, just subconciously, where you think it and a few seconds later you realize that in the game of RL there is no grappling hook mod! Dammit!

Anyone notice the Wakamaru robot manuf'd by Mitsubishi looks just like some 1980s version of a robot from a cartoon, or some toy that I seem to recall, although the name escapes me. Apparently a big round clunky robot with yellow plastic case is going to be the personal assistant of the 21st century.

I would think a real oven with the refrigeration and remote control would be more useful here... I mean who really cooks a meal that takes longer than 10 minutes in a microwave? However, it would be great to throw a meal in the oven for the day and have it start cooking an hour before you get home...

I'm of course glazing over the fact that any sort of appliance (especially one that can burn your house down) should not be accessible from the internet.

Always been one of my 'long lost favorites', as I have only seen it probably once since my childhood and that was at least 5 years ago. My favorite part was the aliens on the ship in the glass jars and such! I will never forget the hilarious laugh that one made. I am joining your cult.

  12. Will most spammers even follow the law?? on Do-Not-Email Registries? · · Score: 1

This would probably help cut down on spam from a lot of larger American companies, however, most spammers are shady and try to get around laws and hide their identities as it is. I'm sure the law will dictate that the spam cannot originate from a mail server physically located in the States, so the spammers will just originate (or bounce) messages from a server located outside of U.S. turf. Not to mention the relative ease of forging email headers.

I don't think they could enforce the law on anyone outside of the States, and I'm sure most spammers won't care.

So I kind of doubt it would be all that effective.

  16. This *could* be a good thing on Congress To Consider Age Limits On Violent Games · · Score: 2, Interesting

Ok I'll probably get flamed for stating this in this community, but...

I don't see why video games can't be rated and regulated the same as movies. If a movie is R rated, you have to be of legal age. This permits movie producers and directors to put content in the movies that is 'for adults.' I have always wondered why video games were not regulated in the same manner.

This may actually help to remove the stigma that video games 'have to be for kids since theyre video games', and allow more adult entertainment (ie gratuitous sex and violence) in video games without tons of media hype and right-wing conservatives jumping all over them and saying they're evil and destroying our youth.

So... rating systems may give us better games and less controversy over them. There is no hype that our youth is being corrupted with the release of each R-rated movie.

Why don't manufacturers start doing dual-DVI outputs? Granted, most LCD's have a second analog input, but what's the point of having one DVI output then?

I wish they'd start putting dual-DVI outputs on them. Maybe one of the other companies that makes them (MSI, PNY, Leadtek, etc) will offer one finally. AFAIK they don't even offer a hydrahead adapter for the one DVI port to split to two (doubt its possible without a proprietary output like the Radeon VE's).

  20. Form Letter Email - where the #*($@ is it?? on The Perfect Email Client? · · Score: 1

One feature that I have many times yearned for is the ability to send semi-personal batch emails to lists or groups. It would be so easy to implement in a mail client too. Just have a New Form Message or something and input the addresses and match each address to some personal attributes like greeting, personal message paragraph, closing, whatever options the user chooses and then also a "generic body" that is the same for all users, with the option to insert variables into it as well (such as first name, etc).

Let me know if this is an existing feature in any clients, but TMK it's not (and I've tried a crapload across all platforms).
