It's just a way to informally let someone know which cycle the technology comes from, relative to the current one in use and the new one being rolled in.
Not it isn't. They are not saying they have the "next generation" technology... they would say exactly that if it was the case. What they are doing is abusing consumers' lack of networking and electronics knowledge in order to increase profits. Nobody [that isn't a techie] knows what speed their cellphone transfers data at. They wouldn't know what the number really meant if they did, too. That is probably how they justified all this nG bullshit to begin with. On the other hand, consumers can compare one number to another if they understand that more is better. With the mystical "4G" service, we are not able to do this simple comparison and thus cannot be well informed about their purchase. This is exactly what the FCC should be trying to stop.
In many cases, these are private companies that have invested literally billions of dollars in infrastructure
Frankly, this whole "net neutrality" debate is a total red herring being thrown up because the government has for years been trying to take over this industry unsuccessfully
Where are you basing these wild accusations? Sources, please!
Look at all of the posts on this. It all boils down to selfishness.
Since when has it been selfish for consumers to look out for themselves? Of course I want to pay less for more bandwidth and less latency. Thats called progress, dammit! And besides, telecom companies have been screwing the U.S. government and we the people for over a decade now.
In my opinion, the government should own and operate all of the telecom infrustructure and lease it out to the private sector to sell to the general public. This would bring down the barrier to entry in an industry dominated by a handful of players and lead to a much healthier market in general. On the other hand, <tinfoilhat>the government has complete control of the networks and that would certainly lead to the end of privacy on the internet as we know it </tinfoilhat>.
No, I click their damned "Print" button, it provides me with a fantastically formatted page, then I print it (again using a button within the page, not my browsers). Fuck all ya'll who modded flaimbait... That was just my opinion, which I figured would be obvious since I started the post with "I always hoped..." Slashdot is really starting to be dominated by a bunch of angry old nerds.
I always hoped that this feature was left out on purpose. You should not be printing web pages; the website should provide you with a document to print if information is actually needed in dead-tree form. The web is formatted for display not print. I know theres times when its needed, so save the html and open it into a program made for printing like Word.
I wouldn't have been granted a $1600 Euro plant ticket to go rub shoulders with the giants of my field.
Most students aren't as lucky as you. In fact, the vast majority of students never travel abroad or get to experience something on the scale of what you described. I also doubt you are getting educated in the U.S. and my ranting really only applies to the U.S., mainly the Cal State system. I failed to mention that.
That shows a lacking of your college program, or a failure on your part.
Exactly, and it was mostly a lacking on my part. I didn't really give a shit about the mindless drudgery my professors were always babbling on about. It was just static information that could be read or researched when needed. My mindset was that I should be taught how to learn rather than forced to memorize some 20-year-old technique of yesterday's technology. And don't even get me started on tests, bell curves, grade quotas, and all that other bullshit Universities make up to pad their numbers. It just seemed like such a game, and a clever student can get a degree without doing much work at all (and without cheating).
Have you ever heard of a chat room? Or forums? The student-to-teacher ratio on the Internet is one-to-over-9000. You'll probably refuse to believe this, but on the Internet there are tons of people willing to share knowledge on most everything there is to know. And its free.
Before you think, "Wheres the incentive for people to help other people" you must realize that there are almost seven billion people on this planet, and roughly two billion have Internet access*. Everyone has a potential audience of two billion people...

All jokes aside I think you are completely right. Universities are riddled with incompetence (a result of rampant bureaucracy IMO) and the text book industry may as well be controlled by the Mafia. I have a degree in Computer Engineering, and I must say my diploma is the last thing I cite as proof of my knowledge. Having a degree is simply stating, "I can put up with bullshit, fill out forms when needed, and listen to those with power," and really has nothing to do with actual, real-world ability. HR departments are starting to realize this (try finding a job with less than 3 years industry experience or some sort of certification being required) and the result is that having a college degree is as lucrative as just a GED a decade ago.
When it comes to learning: higher education < the Internet. I'm serious about this too, I've learned more from Wikipedia (no, not the sources... the actual wiki pages) than I could ever have lerned in college. If the information is out there, why pay for a professor to present it to you when we now have a machine that presents it to us for free?
This is purely speculation, so take it with a grain of salt: No raw materials and manufacturing work from China due to embargoes and general asshattery --> Huge demand for mats and mfg --> No workforce willing/able/allowed to do the work --> the perpetually "almost there" robotics industry lurches forward to fill the void. The warehousingindustry has already been transformed by robots, and theres plenty of talk about robotic mining already. I can't help but think that all this is quite a good thing.
While you are right that a lack of anecdotal data means nothing at all, you seem to be missing the point that anecdotal data still means nothing at all. In other words, my theories derived from a lack of anecdotal data are equivalent to your theories derived from anecdotal data. Its all just useless rambling on both sides
On the other hand, the absence of RPN calculators from the majority of retail stores, schools, etc. should be considered when deciding if RPN is better.
Oh god no! You are so wrong... both parent and grandparent. Let me explain...
Cellular providers do not have the consumer in mind. They never will. They know that once you are in a contract, you *have* to stick around for two years, and you probably will keep paying for 5-10 years before you switch to a new company or go bankrupt. Breaking contract costs just about 75% of what the two years of service would have cost you, so its pretty uncommon for people get out (unless a provider is willing to pay the fee to get you to switch over to them). Having just read this, do you think ATT, Sprint, et. al. give a flying fuck about their existing customers? I'm no expert in this stuff but my guess is NO!
Secondly, these companies have proven that they are willing to hide terms and fees in the fine print in order to screw the customer out of more money. They're so obvious in doing this that the FCC has singled out the industry and begun an investigation (see: TFA). My point is that they WILL hide the option to set a user-defined bill cap, that they will make the default cap virtually unreachable, and that this very article is evidence.
And lastly, I really think that every player in all of the telecom industries needs to be neutered. Communication is a fundimental human right, and now that we do it over wires and such, it has somehow become more of a privilege. Our freedom of communication is at the mercy of a few very large corporations that are run by sociopaths. These companies need serious government regulation, and NOW.
How hard is that?
Get some rocket fuel, put it in a cylinder, bolt some seats on and fly too the moon--How hard is that? Armchair engineering is armchair engineering.
I sure as hell hope you meant drug abuse. You take away my natural freedom to do what I want with my own body, in my own house, you will have a fight on your hands.
You poor, blind fool. Go ahead mod me down, fuck my karma. Its this perpetuation of misinformation that made pot illegal to begin with. Stop believing what you learned from D.A.R.E. and those stupid fucking commercials. Its not just untrue, they are down right lies! Pot is no more harmful to the human body than breathing the air in most major cities. Its incredibly therapeutic, can replace a multitude of harmful otc drugs, has no lasting effect on motor skills, and its 100% natural, unlike every other commercially available intoxicant and pharmaceutical drug.
People don't smoke pot and hurt other people or themselves. If you want proof just go to any music festival and watch as thousands of people peacefully smoke and listen to music with smiles on their faces alongside thousands of other, completely sober people. Cops and security at festivals don't care, they know that the drug is mild and that it breeds an easy-going attitude, especially when being consumed in large groups. Its a drug of inclusion, not exclusion like cocaine or heroine or tobacco or alcohol. There is no real stigma on smoking cannabis, other than the faux-stigma imposed on it by governments and a brainwashed society.
Addiction to cannabis does happen, and this is more of a reason to legalize than a reason to keep it illegal. There are people out there that are addicted to cannabis, and whether it be psychological or chemical addiction, in the end it doesn't matter. They need help, and if they are instantly a criminal due to their habit, the likelihood of them finding help before jail is virtually zero. Drug abuse is not a crime. But it is not a disease either. Its a phenomenon of society that has plagued us from the very beginning. If we could stop demonizing the users and the substances and begin learning how to cope, society will benefit. I'd rather have industries based around rehabilitation of drug abusers than industries based around enforcement of drug laws and incarceration of drug abusers.
I can keep rambling but without links and statistics I doubt anyone will take me seriously. Just click this link, do some serious, informed research, and let the facts lead you to a decision: http://www.norml.org/
Corporations have only shareholders to answer to, and shareholders are only concerned about profits.
Governments have the people to answer to.
I choose government control of my communication any day.
It's just a way to informally let someone know which cycle the technology comes from, relative to the current one in use and the new one being rolled in.

why not just play single player against bots
And thats what Quake did right. Halo, CoD, et. al. do not have a You-Against-Bots mode, only singleplayer and multiplayer.
Or you could browse to Slashdot with your phone and call it good. Stop being a fag.

The $50k is housing and tuition costs for Stanford students, not the price of the service. I'd link you to the source, but, yeah, you won't click it.
Until she starts putting "Yesterday" in the box...

Seriously, AC is correct. I would mod but don't have points.
I'm kind of impressed at the all-Flash storage, actually
No wonder Apple stays in business. Its customers don't have a god damned clue about technology trends.
I always thought stores sold stuff. The Ubu Software Center is just a GUI to a repository, not my idea of a store.
What about FireWire? It's on every current Mac model except the MacBook Air and the non-pro MacBook.
And still nobody uses it.
I wouldn't have been granted a $1600 Euro plant ticket to go rub shoulders with the giants of my field.

Errm, isn't that what working in a corporation is all about?
Yeah, if you want excel at being a cog in the machine. Those of us that actually get things done need real knowledge.
Its only fitting that they revisit a tired old myth for the fourth time when a US politician is coming on the show.
Ha! You had me there for a second. Well said.

Everybody knows the real reason not to switch to Win 7 is because Civilization V runs better with DX9 than with DX10.
Without war a defense contractor would be out of a job. Bombs, guns, or walls, contributing to war is contributing to war.
