  4. Re:Not their job on id CEO Claims PC Hardware Manufacturers Love Piracy · · Score: -1

To say that hardware manufacturers love piracy is a misstatement. Hollenshead's point is moot. Hardware folks just want to sell hardware, just like ISPs just want to sell bandwidth: they don't care what you do with it once you purchase it because they don't need to.

I believe you totally missed his point.

He's mostly pointing out that by having the ability to get the latest, shiniest games at a reduced (or in this case, zero) cost, consumers will tend to prefer the PC as a gaming platform, thus being more susceptible to blow fat wads of cash on the latest, most powerful hardware.

I actually agree, you know... remember Crysis? Some people went nuts and got the latest hardware just to RUN the game smoothly enough, and I have good reasons to believe most of those guys didn't buy the game.

I live in Portugal, Europe, and as far as I know, I haven't heard a single hint about this other than through US media. Namely, I first heard it through the Daily Show. So yeah, I think the "scandal" is all over in the US since they have to find an excuse for their athletes to fail to win every single competition they participate in. Nevermind the fact that most of the athletes found to use drugs in recent years are from the US. *sigh*

Well, actually they did. I have been recently offered a MS headset that plugs in an USB port.

In Linux the volume controls work just fine, but no sound comes through them. It's amazing they actually have a CD with *drivers* for a *headset with microphone*. This is just ridiculous.

And no, I didn't hassle to check my ALSA configs or whatever.

So, uh, enjoy your 400 posts of anecdotal evidence and personal opinion.

Can it even be scientifically measured? All you can get is someone's subjective response to all color and contrast combinations, which varies from person to person.

Sure, you can always build something statistically over the data you collect, but it's always going to have different results over different subjects, IMHO.

  10. Maybe it's contrast? on Best Color Scheme For Coding, Easiest On the Eyes? · · Score: 0

Although I couldn't find any links atm (a little busy, sorry), I believe there are a few studies that point out contrast as an important factor on the usability of text-based applications.

I for one, don't have any trouble with the default colors on vi, but, you could probably try black text on a yellow (not too bright, of course) background.

It's a smooth contrast and it may actually help you focus better on the text you're reading. Also, make sure your vision is ok, you may be forcing your eyes to focus too much and may be in need of lenses.

  13. Re:So, whats the news? on Time Warner Cable Tries Metering Internet Use · · Score: 0

I don't know where you live, but here in Portugal I find bandwidth caps pretty reasonable. Most ISPs have a +40 GB cap for both upstream and downstream traffic (my own ISP has a 60 GB cap on the 24 Mbps ADSL plan), and some even differentiate from "national" and "international" traffic, giving unmetered access to what they consider "national" traffic on top of the rest of the offer. I must say that I've never blown the 60GB cap, even if I can download stuff at over 1 MB/s. It's just a matter of self-control really, and it (sort of) prevents ISPs from using draconian measures in the name of an equal share of bandwidth for everyone.
