He's making a lot of assumptions of what most "hackers" are like, in the areas of gender, politics, eating/reading habits, religion, etc.
What's the purpose of this ?
When he says most hackers do this, eat that, read the other, he can only be talking about himself (and maybe his friends); so I don't see how he can so neatly categorize such a large (and international) group of people. Generalizing like this only encourages prejudice.
They can have natively compiled binaries plus java class files to achive dynamic loading. Very nifty stuff, and very fast java performance (check out the latest reviews on javaworld).

Why are you using multiple VMs when one VM with many threads will suffice ?
Starting up many VMs to handle stuff will consume lots of memory and CPU, don't do that.
Those posts are really sad. I'm hoping somebody was emulating Bruce/Eric and that these are not their actual comments, very embarassing. Sometimes I'm turned off on reading some of their philosophies because of the egos, but I (or we) shouldn't judge a whole movement based on the personalities of a few.
Anyways, this post is *** waaaaaaay *** of topic, if not depressing.
Is 2 hours and some minutes (as John Williams mentions in a recent interview).
Probably around 2:15 hrs... since the movie is going to be modified until 2 weeks before May 19, the running time could change a lot (hopefully it'll be longer, 3hrs?:)
NT for Sparc ? I hope you're joking !!!! The closest thing is WABI, which last time I checked was an old Windows version running on emulation - gack
As for the "Alpha" port. Does MS still support that ? And what apps have been ported to it besides minesweeper ???
Your last line; > x86 chips and clones aren't wonderful for speed, > but compared > to the alternatives they are cheap, > and so are bought.
... Soooo... part of the argument here is that x86 chips are cheap because of Windows, whereas other and better architectures are expensive because they don't run on Windows. Maybe running Linux will be a big selling point and they can sell lots of systems and drive the price down.
They had a really nice Java based widget set , that was fast and super nice looking (with Java 1.0.2 !). They also an applet that looked like an MS word app, a drawing app, etc. It was beatifull and the performance was probably better than today's Swing.
MS bought them and didn't use their products. One of the articles has Fitzgeralds saying they just bought "Smart people", not the technology.
It's easy to judge people in this situation. But sometimes I wonder what I would do if I was offered a big stash of money for scraping my technology. I think I wouldn't do it, but then again, it's one of those things you have to experience to really tell:(
Anyways, thanks for nothing MS, I wonder how many other cool technologies they have killed like this.
I vote for this too !!! I'm curious as to whether RedHat will use that poll and have a link to the (obvious) result (negative).

I am not impressed by the install procedure for this thing. The depencecies had me going all over the place looking for the rpm's.
Does anybody know where I can _download_ umb-scheme? A search on deja-news has a lot of people just pointing at the RedHat CD. I don't have the CD here, is there a download somewhere.
(freshmeat doesn't have it, metalab(sunsite) I can't find it, redhat is s-l-o-w today)
I'll have to say, that compiling and installing KDE has been a lot easier than this. However, I'll reserve judment until I can run this thing (never have).
They have screen shots, and people that went to see the demos. Tekken was being played real-time , and Grand Turismo (check out the screenshot) was ported and played real time.

" It will also be completely compatible with the HDTV standard, but games will run at a standard resolution of 640x480 out of the gate. It is unclear if the system will have built-in 16:9 modes for televisions with that aspect ratio, but since some PlayStation and N64 games include this feature, it's almost a definite. "
> Was that just a hunch or did you hear/read something elsewhere that made you suspect that he dies?
I suspected he might die because Liam stars in a lot of other movies, and I don't think he's the type of actor to do a lot of sequels. So it's a double spoiler for me; he dies, he comes back . Argh !!!
I suspected Liam's character was going to die in the first film, but you totally spoiled this event when posting it in the main slashdot page !!! Please stop this. I don't mind "links" to spoilers so you have a choice to read them, but putting them in plain sight like this really sucks .

Nice to hear you have a good technical reason for it ;)
You're free to solve the problem any way you want but , sheez , it's not that complicated to make the thing just one VM with many threads running.

Just add a sym link to your existing libstdc++
/usr/lib/libstdc++*[whatever you have] /usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.0-1.so.2

That "Committe for the Moral Defense of Microsoft" link gave me the chills ...

I also find it interesting that Ayn Rand's "philosophy" is used as a defense for MS.
Check out this link

The last project I worked on was FAA related. It used C.

My company's biggest contract with the FAA is a system that was developed using Pascal.
Ada is still used for military stuff tough
