  1. Re:Just that pesky Constitution on Slate: Amazon's Tax Stance Unfair and Unethical · · Score: 1

I'm going to call shenanigans here. You may wish to actually look a copy of the United States Code because the Declaration of Independence isn't codified anywhere in there. Probably what you're thinking of is the United States Statutes at large because it is, indeed, in the first volume of that.

However, that doesn't mean it's the law of the land. It's the foundation for our country, but the Congress as we have it now (and really the country as we know it) didn't exist until the current Constitution was ratified in 1788. You could say that it was an act of a Congress, namely the Second Continental Congress which is the group that agreed to promulgate it. However, it's just a declaration of intent. A very powerful one, but not the law of the land.

The Confederation Congress which was organized under the Articles of Confederation followed the Second Continental Congress and wasn't particularly noteworthy other than for its lack of being able to do anything. The current Constitution was drafted to remedy this and when ratified created the United States as we know it. Read any important US Supreme Court opinion and it's the Constitution that is the bedrock law of the land. Very rarely will you even see reference to the Declaration of Independence, noteworthy as it might be.

But if even half of them are just things that Netflix had the rights to stream but has now lost that's really pathetic. As long as this continues and the only things available to stream are a very small percentage of their library, any of which might disappear with very little notice, there's no way they can do anything but spend the money to ship DVDs. They just raised their rates about 15% a couple months ago. On the flip side of this, when I got married last year, my wife and I wished there was a tactful way to tell people "just send us cash to pay for our honeymoon!" We ended up finding a website called honeyfund.com where you can basically let people pay for specific things you plan to do on the honeymoon. You add whatever you want and a description and they can either send you cash or Paypal it. I think there was a minimal setup fee but otherwise they don't take a cut.

The people I know from the Midwest who would have balked at just sending cash loved it because they could see that they were helping out with something that we'd really enjoy. There's nothing that ties you to doing exactly what you said you would with the money -- it's sort of a good faith thing. But I'd say we were about 80% accurate. For people who really wanted to get us nice china or other household appliances we did the normal registry stuff, but I was impressed by how many people opted for just sending us cash.

I love IMDB for keeping track of movies I've seen but they have some really annoying policies around what gets included. How is this any different than the 60 or Funny Or Die movies in IMDB right now? http://www.imdb.com/company/co0215655/ I don't think any of those have gotten anything other than web streaming distribution.

A while back I thought I'd add a few obscure short Russian films that are included on a DVD set I have. Mostly fascinating propaganda from the 1950s or so. About half of the films are in IMDB. I spent a good hour or so using their ancient and difficult to use system entering all of the data that I could find which was relatively substantial. Go figure, they actually had a lot of production information in the credits for the main one I wanted to submit. So I put all the data in, got the e-mail that said OK we'll take a look! Waited. Waited. Got another automated e-mail saying well you don't have enough information. Please add more. So I tried to clean things up a bit. Waited.. Waited.. finally got an e-mail saying Well, sorry, none of our staff have looked at this yet, and don't expect them to. Resubmit with more information if you want us to maybe consider it. !!!

What do they want?? There's tons of movies in there that don't even have things like director and producer credits much less acting credits. After that I just don't see the point in trying to help.

I feel bad for these guys with this torrent movie. Can't imagine they'll get very far on their own with them.

  25. IMDB on Some Netflix Users Have Rated 50,000 Shows · · Score: 1

I prefer IMDB for rating stuff. I have a list of about 500 movies I want to see so I don't really need more recommendations right now. I also have been very interested in short subject pieces (short attention span?) lately ranging from animated to pre-1900 Edison etc. stuff. There's a lot of DVDs of these but if I want to keep track of what I've seen and what I thought of individual "movies" I have to go somewhere other than Netflix.

IMDB is very good for this since they're about 98% complete in my current experience. There's some obscure stuff that hasn't made it in there, but often I'm surprised at how comprehensive it is. I only rate individual "films" and TV series. I don't do individual TV shows since I can remember most every movie I've seen, and TV series that I've seen, but my memory of random individual shows from mostly forgotten sitcoms from the early 1980s is poor. There's also sometimes a substantial delay in them updating with new episodes of lesser watched shows. If it's not in IMDB within an hour or two of when I watch it it probably will never get rated by me.

Even with that I'm approaching 3000 ratings on IMDB. That said, I stopped rating stuff on Netflix after about 1000 ratings and it does mention some interesting things from time to time.
