    John Hardgrave (from Computer Stew) called the BSA and told them point blank that he was running an illegal copy of MS Office... They told him to just delete it.. He insisted that he should be arrested for it, they told him to tell the police. Then he called the police, then the attorny generals office, and finally Microsoft themselves..

    He COULDN'T get arrested..

    Then you shouldn't be using your PIII.. It has drivers (and they have been updated too)

    And to be technical. Its not the CPU that needs the drivers.. Its the motherboard... And every mboard manufacturer tweaks and tweaks the drivers..

    Intel is just lucky enough to have their drivers installed in Winblows by default (their chipset drivers that is).

    And like the Pentium hasn't had updates ? (Remember the F00F bug that screwed the Pentium ? Or the Math Co problem in early pentiums too )

    I think AMD got it pretty damned good for their 1st Athlon release... Compared to Pentium followed by the Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III and finally Pentium IV [when it finally shows up]...

    Oh please !

    Go to places like Tom's Hardware and see their comparison of the Athlon to the PIII.. It's no contest. The only thing that may be is that windows was optimized SPECIFICALLY for the Intel processor line..

    As for the driver set, BFD ! Get a top of the line brand new gee whiz video card, it needs new drivers too ! or .. get a brand new motherboard with a new chip set and you have to get new drivers too..

    Just because it needs new drivers doesn't mean much. EVERYTHING needs drivers, just because AMD's aren't included in Winblows default distribution isn't their fault.

    I run an Athlon 700 at home and my machine at work is a 700 PIII and the PIII seems slower..

    Exactly.. One MAJOR problem I have is the search warrent.. If they were looking for evidence into the break in.. FINE.. their warrent does NOT allow them to take CD's marked porn to "check for 'child pornography'..." I can't remember the legal term for it but that would be thrown out of court SOOOOOO fast it would make their heads spin faster than Linda Blair's.. It is (if I remember correctly) tainted evidence.. IT was obtained without a warrent (just like if the police have a warrent to look in your closet for a body but find a box with drugs, I belive that they they can't do anything without getting another warrent to specifically search for drugs.

    Why ? How does publishing exploits cause a problem ? Its the person who USES the exploits. The people in charge of the system have the same information available to them and if they fail to act upon it, who's fault is that ?

    Should I be arrested for having a car when that car "could" under certain conditions be a murder weapon ? What about the jack-knife I carry in my pocket, is that an illegal concealed weapon ?

    Things like exploit lists are the only way to get some closed source companies to FIX the problems. They have to get enough bad press to hurt their image before they will actually get off their collective asses and fix the problem.

    Anothing thing you fail to think about, most open source system/program exploits usually have a fix/workaround in HOURS, not days, weeks or months like the closed source companies (Or never, like an exploit in M$ SQL server)...

    Well.. what about a story I submitted that IS (I think) of concern to geeks... I submitted a story (no links though) that Adobe.com was hijacked by a company in China (take a look in the whois records)

    Retail stores like CompUSA and BestBuy make most of their profit off of the little things. The profit margin is huge on items like CD-R[W] media, cabling, disk cases/holders, cleaning materials, and the like. The three biggest "profit whores" are Kensington, Belkin, and Targus (good products, but very overpriced). I'd recommend getting this stuff online, since they make more money off of return procedures and shipping large items.

    You aren't kidding on them being overpriced.. 15.00 for a Cat5 connector (to be wired into wall plate) ?!?!? Or 60 bucks for a SCSI 50 mini cable ? Or 100 bucks for a box of Cat5 cable (when I can get a 500foot box of Cat5 wire from Home Depot... Such is life.. I don't buy that stuff from them ( I just get their freebie stuff each week *g* ) but someone must ...

    In my company (an essential service - we run the power grid for the 6 New England States) if we are officially on call, we get paid $ 28 / weekday and $ 58/Sat and Sunday (each day)... and If we get called and have to physically go in its 2 hours minimum ( at $ 28/hour - less than my hourly rate, but better than nothing ). If its after Midnight (and before 7am) its 3 hours minimum...

    I carry a pager 24/7 and if I am called (even if I'm not on call, I basically put it on my time sheet as "called out" time)... Its not policy but my boss is really cool about it,

    Funny thing about that image - it's impossible to tell just from looking at it what we see out of, what we smell out of, etc.! :-) Aliens who see this might think we see out of our nipples and eat through our navels, and that our heads are our sexual reproductive organs. Makes ya wonder...

    Or that we have body hair

    (As an aside: For those who have seen the commercial, is it me or does every one who uses the BowFlex lose their body hair and have their nipples shrink ?)...

    As far as running old versions of Win95, well OpenBSD users are quite different from Win95 general users. People who are running OpenBSD like to apply those patches,etc.

    Where did you get Windows 95 from ? I said 95 % of people...

    And how many people are still running the 2month old version ? 95% of people do NOT run the latest and greatest (especailly companies where they have to run the same version on all systems until it has been tested) and in fact, most probably skip versions or they would have to update all their servers every few months (not easy or practical).

    The problem that bugtraq has ( I think ) is that they fix "bugs" (not really, its programming style) and then don't tell anyone that it "could" be exploited... then when some other BSD does get bitten by the "bug" they yell "See.. We fixed it already ..." (when they should have at least announced the potential for it to be exploited.)

    I had to replace a HD when it went bad (at the end of the 3 year 3 month term).. They didn't make that size HD anymore, so I got one that was 2x the old one. Is that "no longer" the same computer ?

    Get real. This is one reason why I won't purchase a system (unless I can buy a virgin/naked one)..

    One problem.. How do I create a DVD player on Linux if I can't verify my logic works do decrypt the data stream playback ?

    Answer: I write it to run on Winblows (which happens to have a player) so I have something that I can compare to.

    Windows NT 4.0 has been proven in demanding customer environments to be a reliable operating system.

    That might sound like marketing-speak, but for better or worse, its true. NT is there in the server farms of America, and it is staying up and performing in spite of itself. Get used to seeing Win2k more and more in the server farms you visit in coming years.

    This is a good point.. Someone should compare things like how much a single machine can handle (none of this server farm crap).. Of course 20 Windows NT will allow you to have "zero downtime"... but is it comparing apples to apples ?

    Why blame the reverse engineers ? Blame it on a VERY shakey business model. The only way they could have possibly gotten it to work is to have made the driver/hardware so self contained that you couldn't disect the hardware without it melting down.. then reverse engineering wouldn't be as simple.

    Another problem is that they could (and WILL) use their sof

    I own it.. If I wanna use it to scratch my cats ass, I can (even if it IS a violation of their EULA)...
