  1. Link to Comment on Dept. of Justice Considers Web For ADA · · Score: 1

I was going to comment until, while adding my personal data, I noticed that the state pull-down was alphabetized incorrectly. Now, I am not perfect but if I was browsing anywhere else I would immediately be worried I was at a site for harvesting personal information and not a government entity.

  2. 3G burning up my battery on Sleeping iPhones Send Phantom Data · · Score: 2, Interesting

I live in a fringe area. While I get a good number of bars with Edge, 3G is hit or miss. I work in town where 3G reception is good though so I usually keep 3G on. That said, I have noticed that some evenings my battery drains almost completely while just sitting on my dresser. It's not every night so I chalked it up to reception. However, this makes more sense if it's trying to transmit data with a crappy signal.

  3. Re:No peer-review necessary as long as you agree.. on Climate Change Finally Impacts Important Industry · · Score: 3, Interesting

Exactly! The brewer at the local micro brewery told me that the decreasing harvests were simply due to farmers getting out of the business. It seems the larger breweries had stockpiled so much hopps they drove prices into the dirt..so to speak. He said it was a normal supply and demand thing and that as soon as it once again became profitable to grow hopps the farmers would replant.

  4. I call BS on this survey on At Least 25 Million Americans Pirate Movies · · Score: 0, Redundant

I don't buy that percentage. Heck, it's higher then the percentage of Americans with broadband and I am sure that most employers would NOT be happy about their bandwidth going to movie downloads so don't tell me they are doing it at work. Who did they survey, hackers anonymous?

  5. Rover Time on Mars Rover Reaches Victoria Crater · · Score: 0

According to the article - "Opportunity has been exploring Mars since January 2004" - no where near the three years reported by the poster. No offence, it's just that life is already going by at warp speed and there is no sense in rushing it. I am guessing the three year time frame included the trip to Mars as well.

  6. Subversion on Google News Leaves Beta · · Score: 3, Insightful

I just read the blog. I have not used Google News and have no axe to grind. However, I can't help but worry about a service that "finds or picks" my news for me using algorithms. Isn't anyone worried that someone could be tweaking the search criteria to control what is displayed? When the news comes from many sources you learn to read into the articles what each organization's hidden adgenda is. By leaving the choices of what is presented up to a machine that is ultimately controlled by a few people rather than many editors across several outlets, we make ourselves vulnerable to suggestion or manipulation. I can see why they were worried about lawsuits....just a crazy rant.

  7. I think NOT on Annual Cost of Microsoft Monopoly: $10 Billion · · Score: 1

How could someone have a monopoly over something that is free. It would be like a saying that the ma bells have a monopoly over a VOIP provider like Vonage. It is simply a matter of choice since anyone can download Linux and install it for virtually nothing. So the question is; Why do people pay for something they can get for nothing?

  9. Working at a University on What You Should Know When Taking a University Job? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I worked at a large university for a short time about 5 years ago. It was the worst experience of my life. I too had returned to take classes and a job became available. It should have been a great job. The hours were awesome, the pay was ok and school was free. Unfortunately my boss was a complete psycho. I really wanted to work but she didn't want me touching anything! One day she stood in my office door and stamped her foot while yelling about something I did that she didn't like. I finally gave up; I set books (mainframe programming) up on my desk as props and did my homework. When you interview, listen carefully and watch the people you will be working with. Sometimes years of being opressed by the social order in that type of environment drives people nuts....

  10. Raw is a double edged sword on Image Preservation Through Open Documentation · · Score: 1

I work for the largest professional photo lab in the country and we process very few RAW files. Last year for example, we processed better than 13 Million digital files and received less than 1K in raw format. The reason is that our customers are alread overwhelmed by the digital revolution. Back in the day, we did ALL the work. We processed the film, balanced the color and took care of printing - and we got it right. Now, with digital, our customers have taken on a great deal of that responsibility. So much so they work harder at composing their shots correctly and output in jpg rather than take the time to use the clunky, camera manufacturer supplied RAW conversion software. Ideally, we would accept all manufacturers RAW files, but it will be nearly impossible until there is a standard RAW file. That doesn't mean the cameras have to work the same, just that the math to process the file will be identical.

  11. Tiger Looking for Work on Tiger Woods Signs Deal To Be Apple Spokeperson · · Score: 1

I guess since GM may be whacking Buick, Tiger needs to find some other product to annoy us with. Frankly, I don't know why everyone holds Tiger in such high esteem. In my opinion, he has had it way too easy since most of his golf competition are nearing retirement. Get a real job Tiger!

  13. I liked it on Lycos Pulls Vigilante Anti-spam Campaign · · Score: 1

IMHO Lycos had the balls to stand up to the spammers and that is a good thing. To the people who are poo-pooing Lycos I say you are wrong. I don't think the plan backfired at all. Their method got some attention and points out that something needs to be done.

  14. Microsoft has no competition.... on Microsoft's Long-Playing Business Record · · Score: 0, Troll

As long as there are other solutions (Linux, Mac) the whole anti-trust thing is crap. Microsoft has a great product and their stuff is easy to obtain and use. It is unfortunate that until now nobody has made anything that rivals Microsoft's products becuause they would sell better, right?

  15. Personal Satisfaction on Changing Jobs for Job Satisfaction? · · Score: 1

I have changed careers several times in my 20 years of gainful employemnt. From demolition contractor (family business) to coding software for a professional photo lab. I have found that certain jobs just don't fit. I mean I like parts of some jobs I have had, but my current postion has more positives than negatives. I think it is all about how you feel about what you do and what your personal priorities are. Money is also an important part of a career decision, but if personal growth potential is there, it is sometimes better to make the hard decision to take the job that fits and suffer financially for the short term....IMHO

  16. Stay with Film as long as possible on Best 35mm SLR Camera for Beginners? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I work for a professional photo lab and I see lots of crappy digital images. I think you are making a great choice by choosing film to learn with. Your results will be good as film has tons of lattitude and will be forgiving. Nothing more discouraging than realizing the picture on that little LCD does not accurately represent what is in the camera memory. Before shooting digital, we would like to tell our customers (of course we can't) to shoot a roll of slide film. If they can meter properly with the slide film, they are ready for digital photography. Slide film has a very narry sweet spot, so is much more difficult to use compared to negative film. Whatever camera you choose, happy shooting!!

  17. Make it Cheaper or Shut the Fuck UP on Newest Audio CD DRM Proves Ineffective · · Score: 1

The record companies just don't get it. They should reduce the cost of the CDs! The current pricing is absolutely insane. Artists see little of the money and the record companies spend too much time worrying about enforcement. Wasn't music supposed to be fun? Jees, all I hear about is some greedy bastard worrying about not getting is take. If the music is good, people will by the media to have for themselves.

It is clear the author of this twaddle has never worked with the masses supporting any type of computer system. If he had, he would know that explaining the steps to open an email attachment and giving it executable permissions to 80% of end users would be like teaching a dog to drive. I get the same blank stares from my "charges" every day while explaining the most rudementary computer related tasks. If I hear "I am not a compter person" one more fricking time, I am going to go on a 5 state killing spree!!
I welcome the ease of use of Windows and I am happy to pay for the virus protection and fix an occaisional fuck-up. At least it keeps those blank stares from cluttering up my dreams at night.....
