  1. Cold zones on Building an Open Source Nest · · Score: 5, Informative

I just bought a new thermostat. I really wanted a Nest because of it's cool factor however, I ended up buying a Honeywell. First, the Nest isn't as advanced; for example, the Honeywell has some features that allow me to run the fan periodically throughout the cycles. It also allows me to add an additional "slave" thermostat and average the temperature between my upper and lower levels. While the Nest allows you to view multiple thermostats in a single interface each stat required separate HVAC systems. The Honeywell also comes with a remote control that sense the temperature where you are sitting and will adjust the set point to make you comfortable. The bottom line is that sometimes new and cool isn't as good as tried and true when you actually do some research.

  4. Automakers need to supply an option to turn off connectivity. I think a switch on the dashboard would be adequate. Unless there is a PCI-ish compliance law for my personal data collected by Ford or any other manufacturer, and since I am never sure exactly what or how they are collecting it, what they are collecting is a violation of my personal privacy. Maybe we should be asking our congress for mandates to that affect. Except the government will be the first to subpoena the manufacturers to grab the data. Maybe the ball peen hammer idea is the best.

I'm sorry but you are not exactly correct. In 1975, Kodak invented the device that utilized the CCD chip to ultimately cause its own demise. That device is the digital camera. Kodak was the market leader in digital imaging technology and their position was enhanced by both Apple and Adobe. However, as devices became more prolific and other manufacturer's quality and usability increased, Kodak was unable to capitalize on its own technology. Without a successful next generation product, the decline in the use of film which was their high margin bread and butter is what caused them to seek bankruptcy protection.

I routinely connect a 27 inch Thunderbolt display for desktop use and would like to add a second. It seems that the better the laptop display, the bigger external monitor I can connect when at the office. With this reasoning, I am depending on manufacturers to keep upping the ante to make my laptop more functional for normal use. For times when I need it portable, I can change the settings to whatever is comfortable.

  10. Cartridge design is part of the problem. on ATF Tests Show 3D Printed Guns Can Explode · · Score: 1

Guns (or gun barrels) are made of metal because modern cartridges are not strong enough to manage the burning of the gun powder. When the primer is hit by the hammer and ignition starts, pressure inside the brass cartridge builds and causes the brass to expand. The cartridge expands to the diameter and length of the chamber. The expansion also releases the bullet which travels into the barrel, a slight force fit, and as pressure builds sends the bullet down the barrel and out of the gun. For a plastic chamber to work, we would need to redesign cartridges to handle the pressure without being encapsulated. However, even by doing that, the barrel of the gun wouldn't last. Jacketed bullets combined with the hot burning powder tend to wear the rifling over many shots. Without a metal chamber or rifled barrel, I don't see how a printed gun could ever be useable long term with today's cartridges.

Or is this up for debate every year? Every time an already existing and passed law needs funding, but some disagree with it, the whole country can be held to ransom by those who disagree?

You people make me sick. You ignore your own system, you are destroying your own government for fringe interests.

You mean like the discussion about abortion or maybe the discussions on gay rights. Or how about DOMA, that was a good one too for about 5 minutes. My favorite is the 18th amendment. Good, ongoing discussions about that one. No discussion is ever over in the USA. That's the whole point of having lawmakers and a flexible document that we govern by.

Nobody seems to realize that education has no economies of scale so budgets are consumed by new construction of better and fancier facilities.
What higher education really needs is to be modeled after a business. It should be light on management, heavy on instructors and facilities should be just adequate. Maybe then the subsidies would be enough and insane borrowing by students who are there to learn instead of for the college experience would be minimal.
