A minuscule percentage of the "break down in sunlight" bags actually do as they mostly get buried. In fact once buried deep enough nothing breaks down as no bacteria survive. They dug up a chicken bone meat and all after 50 years from a landfill.

This goes right next to these heavy green bags that replace the cheap disposable bags. The reality is that disposable bags get used again at least to hold rubbish. The reusable often do not and even they are 28 bags worth of plastic/energy most commonly used only a couple of times.

If these guys did not have a strong enough case, there where up against the others that made a better case then them. NASA should and has been held accountable for its wrongs. Do not forget that going to space is hard, real hard and NASA designed and flew the space shuttle which was the most complex machine by a margin and it hardly had any prototypes.

The other options are spend a hell of a lot more money ensuring safer rides or don't go (or possibly fix what is wrong with NASA).

I think NASA a has a good balance considering its successes and now the private sector is being baby stepped into taking some of the roles.

  15. I have made two realizations on Trials and Errors: Why Science Is Failing Us · · Score: 1

    I have made two realizations

    1. Science does not know "why" in the way religions answers the question. It is a human need to answer the "why".
Science comes up with a theory that can be used to predict events in a causal manner. That is it's job. The why predicates a motive/reason and nature from sciences perspective does not have motives. We should not mix the "how" something happens with the "why" something happens. It is a delicate difference.

    2. Until a decade or so ago religion was picking a fight with science and science was not responding. In the last decade a small group in "science" has been fighting back and answering the attacks using logic and the scientific method as tools. It seems to be more and more effective with the rise of skepticism and rationality. Its a long way, but I think there's no stopping. I would say that the church is getting uncomfortable. If it doesn't fight it does not stand up to it's doctrine, if it does fight it stirs up a response it is not equipped to fight.
