  1. yes and no... on RIAA Writes Its Own News For Local TV · · Score: 0

Yes, video news releases, as they are often known, are nothing new. Yes, plenty of companies put them out. Even the government has put out VNRs. Yes, they have the potential to be an easy way to fill two minutes of a newscast. But there are MANY stations around the country that have strict rules about VNRs: many times, not permitting them, or if you do use them, you must disclose the source of the video. I don't think that there are stations wildly running entire VNRs left and right, as the OP somewhat implies. And even at a station that permitted VNRs, I doubt this VNR would have made it on air -- music piracy isn't really a "sexy" topic for the audiences that a lot of TV news is aimed at these days.

  2. Re:University of Miami on Best Places To Work In IT · · Score: 0

I worked for UM IT as a student employee from 1997-2001. The first two years, I was a user assistant in the computer labs. Not much different from your average work-study job, but we did have access to a better Unix server than the general student population had. After that, I was "HTML Editor" for the IT division that ran the computer labs and some other things. That job quickly morphed into PHP programmer, as we implemented various web-based things for the student system. Not a bad way to make a few bucks more than minimum wage, with the convenience of a campus job.

There is something that deals with legislation: the Congressional Record (wiki article, the actual thing). It provides a record of floor speeches, bills, and more! Of course, it would still have to be read...

The BBC isn't the only one running weather graphics on Linux. I know that the station I work at uses a weather computer system that runs on Linux. But there's a big difference between generating weather graphics with Linux and switching and playing back full video streams with Linux.

  5. Re:Windy on Communications Infrastructure No Match for Katrina · · Score: 0

Coming from someone who works at a TV station, rain fade really sucks. We had rain fade yesterday, and our signal from our reporter in the panhandle was a bit weak at first. Then, CNN had some rain fade coming out of Atlanta, so there were problems with the signal we had from them. IIRC, Ku analog signals hold up a bit better in the rain than the Ku digital ones.

  6. it's not necessarily piracy... on Instant Concert CDs? · · Score: 0

Plenty of bands (Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, among others) have policies that allow concertgoers to record the concerts and distribute them, not at a fee of course. And Phish has its new web service that distributes soundboard-quality concerts over the net, the next day, for a fee. Of course, with the venues taking a cut of it, that's a slightly different story.

Thank you. It's about time that someone recognized the media. I had to work today (TV newsroom), but that was fine with me. I actually got a call from someone who thanked everyone for being there, and giving up the day... etc.

  9. AT&T Broadband/Comcast Merger? on AT&T Caps Bandwidth On Former @Home Users · · Score: 0

Assuming the merger passes governmental muster (and I don't know if it will or not), what can the current ATTBI customers expect from Comcast? I'm one of the lucky ATTBI customers that was not on @home, because I am on the old MediaOne network. So I haven't experienced the latest round of changes. But, will something be in store soon? I do know that some Comcast markets had been prepared for the @home problems, before they pulled the plug. So maybe that's a good sign?

Has anyone seen the book by one of the former CEOs/founders of theglobe.com? He and his buddy finished college (I think?), started the company, thought they had it made, then it all fell apart. A shell of the company still exists, but they haven't been apart of it for some time.

What about Opera? It's very standards-compatible, and no addons that I know of. You can even choose to download without a JVM. It renders pages pretty quickly, doesn't crash much. It has that little ad window in the free version, but it's not too invasive.

When I was at Office Depot a few weeks ago buying the chair I am currently sitting in at home ($99, very adjustable), I saw several mesh-backed chairs. Don't remember if I saw any with mesh seats, but it's possible. And most of them were in the $100-$150 price range, maybe even a little less.

I got into MSFS with 5.0 for DOS. I eventually got MSFS95, but nothing since. I know that there's a 98, and maybe even a newer version. And there's an entire community of FS players out there, creating planes, creating scenery, creating other add-ons. I think there's even a air traffic control add-on...you link up over the net with other players, and someone acts as the ATC. Plus, MSFS spawned several others (Pro Pilot comes to mind), plus the FS games of the military stream. It's huge.

  22. Re:Just for your info (spoiler warning) on Review - Bicentennial Man · · Score: 1
I saw the movie yesterday, and last night I also saw the review by Ebert and his "crony." My thoughts:

    1. Yeah, it probably isn't a kids' movie really. Maybe the first hour or so. But when Sir and Little Miss die, it's too much to be a kids movie. I think the commercials are giving the wrong impression. I thought it was more of a kids movie from the commercials. If they had been more "accurate," it might have been a different story.

    2. Something Ebert mentioned, and I agreed with, was that the passage of time was a little off. When the first period of time passes, Little Miss looks like she's in her late 20's. Maybe older. Meanwhile, they say that they've had Andrew for 15 years? And she couldn't have been much older than 7 or 8 in the first part of the movie. Then, when Portia first appears, how much time had passed? I don't know how realistic it was for Little Miss to suddenly have a granddaughter that was probably near 30. Before Andrew takes off on his journey, Lloyd had just passed the Bar. Now he has a daughter? Supposedly, it had been 20 years. Add on a few more, maybe it's been 25. But still.... Ebert *did* have a good point with this one.

    3. The movie did seem to drag a bit. An hour in, I thought it was almost over. But then it kept going.

    Just my two cents.
