I've been trying to make additional money using my skills as a software engineer, while looking for employment, and recently created a game called DodgeDot for iPhone. But that hasn't taken off yet given all of the competition in the mobile space.
I suggest that he get off his high horse and start finding work outside of his "chosen" field.

I used to be stuck in 800x600-land, and the worst thing about graphical Linux was programs that were made to run only in a 1024x768 window. Pressing TAB a few times and then hitting the spacebar, then TAB a few more times and hit the spacebar, hope it does something constructive, rinse, repeat.

I have never bought an e-book either. However, I did order over half a dozen books from Amazon this month, one as a gift.
Amazon's used books are the best I have found price-wise besides thrift stores, and with thrift stores you can only buy what is physically there.
Most older books can be had for a penny plus $3.99 shipping (media mail).
Try taking a leak in the coffeepot. It always helps me focus.
