  1. Re:Funny thing about halflife... on 'Quantum Leap' Awards For FPS Games Revealed · · Score: 1

I've read that a possible fix to the motion sickness problem you are experiencing is to change the FOV (Field of View) from the default 75 to 90 (which supposedly is the norm for other FPSs).

In the console, enter the following:
    sv_cheats 1
    fov 90

If you want to change it back to the default, fov 0 does the trick.

At least, that's what I've read.

  2. Re:All new 3D Shooters are missing one thing... on Prey Review · · Score: 1

The best game that I've played recently that included a co-op component was Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

You had to work together because the maps were specifically designed for co-op play. You couldn't necessarily go Rambo. Certain areas were inaccessible without working as a team.

Plus, like the single player portion, the best part about the game was figuring out how to incapacitate your foes. But being co-op, you had to coordinate in order to have the best outcome. Nothing like grabbing two guys simultaneously and using them on a pair of retinal scanners. Or throwing your partner over a chasm to allow him to knock a few bad guys out and open a path for you.

The only thing that sucked about the game was there just wasn't enough co-op levels (even after they added a few in a patch). My friend and I wrapped most the levels after a few evenings of gaming.

  4. Re:Obligatory fanboy comment on The GBA's Last Stand · · Score: 1

I agree. The one thing I've loved about the GBA is that it has helped keep certain genres of games alive like side-scrolling platformers.

There's no doubt that 3D hardware can handle that form of gameplay. It's simply not considered as marketable as the high-end 3D games unfortunately.

Viewtiful Joe and Alien Hominid are good examples of side-scrollers on 3D gaming consoles. Does anyone know of many more? I believe the PS2 has some 2D RPGs but they aren't as plentiful either.

As an aside, good graphics can help a good game (but you need a good game first). IMHO, Half-Life 2 benefits from good graphics as well as Far Cry. It helps create atmosphere and increases your immersion into the game world which then heightens the tension.

I agree with JaffaKREE and idsofmarch. sahrss' post is not a troll!

In fact, most of the games mentioned aren't all that revolutionary. I thought Half-Life 2 rocked but it wasn't this huge improvement on the genre. Nothing mentioned about Halo 2 sounded all that kickass-ish. They're simply the natural evolution of games of late: better graphics, better sound, better physics.

Out of all the nominees, Katamari Damacy sounds like the most unique game to be released lately. I haven't played it myself but the whole concept sounds very interesting. No. Wait. That can't win. It didn't make $125 million the first day. I wonder how they made all that money? Maybe every XBox owner had to buy Halo 2 as it was the only descent game for the system since...

    ...Halo.

  6. Space issues on Smarter Than the Average Joystick · · Score: 1

People complain about their joystick taking up too much space. A treadmill probably takes up even more desktop space than a joystick.

But seriously, where would you put a treadmill? I like the idea (as it helps combat obesity) but the only way this would work was if you had a plasma or LCD TV like they show in the pictures. Most people I know don't leave enough room for a treadmill to go where their chair usually is. Plus, I'm poor and only have a 19" CRT. I'd feel like I'm running to catch up to my character on the screen let alone "be" him.

As for the lightsaber, I forsee a few beaten up monitors in the clouds....

I agree. I think that flashier graphics can kill games and genres. 2D side-scrollers would be a thing of the past if the GBA was more capable of displaying 3D graphics. Along with many other types of games. I think that is what makes the GBA so appealing to me. It has the graphic abilities of the SNES, the pinnacle of non-3D gaming consoles, which allows for some fantastic 2D gaming.

  9. Campus radio station on How Would You Start a Radio Station? · · Score: 1

A group of students up at our university started a radio station a year or 2 back. Most of our equipment was donated thankfully (transmitter, first set of CD players, mixer board, mic, etc).

As for start up fees, I'm not sure. It sounds like Canada regulates radio differently. The process required applying to the CRTC and Industry Canada (CRTC giving us the okay to have a radio station with the content we specified in the application and Industry Canada saying it was okay to transmit without causing problems on that frequency). The station's budget per year is about $2000 (though I may be wrong, I'm just a DJ after all). Of course, there is a radio society that runs the station that has a membership fee that generates a small portion of that.

In response to a post mentioning "What are you going to do about running the station 24/7?", our radio station has a PC running a MP3 player that plays recorded shows when no one is at the station.

But I do agree with some of the other posters: do some more research. It's obvious you haven't.

It was a 72 pin DIMM and the there was only one notch in the breadboard on the connector edge. The only other notch (which also didn't affect installation due to the design of the slot) was on one of the short sides.

Current DIMMS have notches along the connector that are off-centre (making it very hard to put the RAM in backwards)

The author of this article is a complete idiot. Myst had okay graphics but was *yawn* boring as hell. The problem is "some people" decided that now that 3D games are easier to make, that's what people want. What's wrong with 2D graphics? I don't find Sam & Max Hit the Road any less funny or fun because "It ain't 3D!" I bought a SNES a couple of months ago so I could play Super Metroid (I hated playing it on my emulator. My gamepad just doesn't feel the same.) which is an awesome game that is also 2D. I think people equate 3D with cutting-edge coolness or something just as stupid. Good games require solid gameplay and decent controls/interface. I hate Megaman because I feel the lack of control keeps killing me. Abuse (now legal abandonware) is a great side-scroller (2D of course) but has an awesome control scheme. I don't play these things because they use the "latest most powerful 3D engine" but because they're FUN.
