I concur. I always thought (growing up) that prison was supposed to be a rehabilition facility. While also sepreating a 'dangerous' population from the regular population until they were fit to reintegrate.
Apparently I was wrong. It is just punishment, and there is nothing too cruel, or bad enough for non-violent marajuana dealers to endure.
Well maybe you should stop bitching about an 8 year old OS not doing what you want.
And maybe you should stop bitching about an 8 year old Browser not doing what you want.
Because people don't use some functionality, or have (in computing lifetimes) ANCIENT software. Don't blame the modern product. It was IMPOSSIBLE to sandbox Safari when XP and IE6 came out. Because no version was released! Same goes for Firefox (Firebird too), and Chrome.
Congratulations you just compared IE6 on an 8+ year old OS, to browser LINES that didn't exist when EITHER XP OR IE6 came out. Opera did exist.
It is time to face it IE8 is a good browser. Worthy of comparison to Firefox. IE7 and IE6 were horrible. In fact when IE6 came out, I stayed with IE5, until I used mozilla, then Firebird, well before it became Firefox.
That is exactly the point. It ISN'T just a simple as moving to Finland.
And moving to Finland wouldn't be all that simple to begin with.
And it is a false dilemma that 644bd346996 put forward.
'near-universal accessiblity, with some politically imposed limits'. I can accept that as the current, or base assumption.
-- or --
'universal accessibility to a site that can't handle the load because they can no longer afford the servers and connection they need'. I assume that servers, and connections in Finland are about the same cost, and reliability as they are in the USA. I don't even accept prohibited costs as an accepted argument. Not saying it would be cheap or easy, but not saying it is 100% known to be too costly.
I am not saying it would be easy or cheap. But OPERATING COSTS wouldn't
Now this doesn't full refute YOUR argument. But there are many other options for them to provide that information. I am not, and have not speculated on them.
Sourceforge could easily change their line to 'to make our community as inclusive as possible within the restrictions of current US law'
They could also disregard the US law.
These are real arguments that are not considered with the False Dilemma.
Does Apple ENGINEER their high quality caps and fans?
Does Apple ENGINEER their high-end INTEL processors?
Does Apple ENGINEER their custom formed Li-Poly batteries?
Does Apple ENGINEER their own ASICs? You only said they DESIGNED them.
Does Apple ENGINEER their own glass trackpads?
I will give you that they most likely ENGINEERED their 'innovaive connectors' as it is something that a 2nd year Electrical Engineering student could have done. The DESIGN is quite awesome however and is really the only thing that makes it so unique.
I am sorry but PROGRAMMING is not ENGINEERING, it is however very close.
You pointed out lots of DESIGNS that make Apples nice. The ENGINEERING is not done by them.
Oh and the slike aluminum cases are really slick. I honestly like them, and think they are the best laptop case going. But they do burn a bit. Because they were DESIGNED, not ENGINEERED. An ENGINEER would get rid of that heat, and would give two shits how cool it is.
And I didn't say Dell was any better. But ENGINEERING is VERY different than design.
I never said it would be peaches and cream for them to pick up and go to Finland. I merely pointed out that there is direct conflict arrising between operating in the US and their stated objectives.
I realize it isn't just as simple as moving to Finland.
Well according to them the US is limiting their ability to 'to make our community as inclusive as possible'. So that would seem that the US is not a 'country that affords them the gretest opportunity to succeed.'
I realize it isn't just as simple as moving to Finland. But what you said makes less sense.
Yeah and they are way more fun and the urge to burn tires is uncrontrollable!
And it isn't that hard to learn te crusie in a good RPM range, and not over rev the engeine without the clutch engaged. If you learn those 2 things, and do them 80% of the time you will beat the horrible inefficent wastes that are torque converters.
And how are you 'wasting' time shifting? You are in the car. You are driving. Your left foot is doing NOTHING if you have an auto.
Unless you are fiddeling with the GPS, while talking on the phone, and tuning the radio, in between dipping your fries in ketchup, and shaving on the way to work. Oh and reading the paper.
And still your left foot does nothing.
As a former employee of REI who always made the list back then. I would agree that this list means nothing.
I mostly worked at REI for the disconuts, while I was at college. I had loans, and my incredible cheapness to actually live. I got paid less than a person working the drive through. I was extreemly knowledgable about cycling, where I worked. And fairly knowledgable in camping, and clothing. It wasn't the worst place to work, but not the best. They required you to work on weekends and weekdays, even though there were plenty of people who wanted to work one or the other. And they prevented you from trading shifts to avoid weekends on a regular basis. The seemed to always schedule you on the day you wanted off. And well in my case scheduled me during my "Can't work peroiod" on a weekly basis. It may have just been my store, but I don't remember thinking people thinking the other stores in the area were any better.
But I also worked on the east coast, and we heard stories about how much more relaxed and better things were out in WA.
Because when there is a Senate seat won in Mass, and you live in California, you would not want to know the ramifications to the healthcare bill in the senate?
Well there are 3 things that a newspaper gives you.
1. There first is 'news' in your description. What is actually happening on the ground. This can NOW, be largely attained for free, or very low cost.
2. They offer you analysis of the 'news'. What they predict will happen, what trends are going around, ramifications of 'news', and their opinions of what happened.
3. Adverts. These are supposed to pay for 2 above.
Print editions also supply you paper, and your subscription supposedly pays for the paper and delivery.
The problem is that this model is not working now. The internet has pulled the advert money from the papers, and spread it out over the entire internet. The papers are going through a paradigm change, and are not acknowledging it. They are attempting for people to pay for 2 instead of ads, and getting the ads to pay for the medium. Everyone is up in arms because they used to get item 2 for 'free'; rather it was paid for by someone else. Now it is getting flipped.
I hope that news outlets can survive this transition. It will mean better news for everyone. When they are not responsible, or dependant on advertisers’ money they truly will be independent. And if you look at the ‘best’ journalist institutions around you will find that almost all of them don’t bow to governments, or corporations.
As far as I know google/telecom versions of Android will only turn on one radio (exclusive of bluetooth) at a time. For battery, and instantanious power draw.
But Verizon CDMA network won't let you send data and talk at the same time. Not that being able to talk and surf at impossibly slow ATT speeds at the same time is really worth anything.
Well I believe it does. I can say that I and the person that I shared a copy with will not use it at the same time.
Now I would expect that in order to be prosecuted that the publisher would have to prove (innocent until proven guilty) that I used my copy and the exact same time (and I would think the exact same segment, as I could lend parts of the book if I wanted) as whoever I shared it with.
It is the publishing industry’s and the music industry’s greed that pushed them to digital formats. They should realize that there are problems involved with bringing the material value of your product to ZERO! A book costs 15$, an ebook costs 11$ (you expect me to believe that the printing and distribution, and sales of a physical book is only 4$). Their greed is biting them in the ass.
They are probably making triple on an eBook over what they make on a print book. So if they loose two REAL sales they are still not losing money.
Just because he *probably* wont remember. And *probably* won't do anything about it. And it *probably* won't be a violation of your rights. DON'T MEAN YOU SHOULD BE COMPLACENT!
It can be all three, and if you let it be that way for a while you won't be able to say anything when those things start happening.
Most of what we are talking about there is no $/hour rate. It is a $/year rate. And you are only required to produce an acceptable amount of work and be available during the week. As far as I know that is what most salary positions entail.
Who cares if an employee surfs for 4 hours on Shashdot/ESPN/Wootoff? If they get an acceptable amount of work done why care? If I actually produced as much as I could (might hit some burnout) I would REQUIRE a much higher salary. A salary that can't be justified because an Engineer with 5 years expierence cant be paid 50% more than I am being paid.
And I am a REAL engineer. Not a programmer. Not that programming is easier, but it isn't quite engineering.
I concur. I always thought (growing up) that prison was supposed to be a rehabilition facility. While also sepreating a 'dangerous' population from the regular population until they were fit to reintegrate.

Refinement and DESIGN. There is nothing apple does with engineering the other guys do. They put commodity parts into slick aluminum casings.

Yeah use our cool browser that reports almost all of you browsing back to us. We won't be evil, we promise!
Or it could violate my 4th amendment rights a an American citizen!
I would hope that would be more important than Attorny client privilege.

Yes I am saying that is is 100% acceptable for them to surf the web half their time in the office, under the condition that:
They finish work that is fair for their pay!
Why should I work extra hard so you get your bonus? That arguement goes both ways.
