  1. Re:Boo f*cking hoo on Used Game Market Affecting Price, Quality of New Titles · · Score: 3, Insightful

I really can't see how game prices are too high or even much higher than a few years ago.

The content of most games today (being it story or quests like in Fallout 3 or graphics / models / textures like in... well, almost all of them) aren't even comparable to the older classics.

Since i'm currently playing it, i'll stick with Fallout 3 compared to its predecessors as an example.

Quest-wise, they may have the same amount of content, i guess 1 and 2 even a bit more in the writing department.

    - In Fallout 3, every NPC response is voice acted
    - Id guess that just adding a non-functional building in a detailed 3d environment takes about 10 times more (people) ressources (developer/modeler/QA) than in a isometric engine
    - 3D terrain also adds a large amount of playtesting

These are just a few examples.

BTW, i'm not saying that 3D makes everything harder, i would think it saves a lot of work, too (not necessary to draw 500 sprites for every possible character action, clothes etc). My point is just that game development has become MUCH more complex in the last 10 years.

Please note that Fallout is just an example for why games are a - in my opinion surprisingly tiny - amount more expensive today, i don't really want to discuss the game itself or how it compares to its predecessors.

I agree. I just pointed it out since the original fallouts where better suited for that, since you could use your action points for moving instead of just attacking.

There is no very limited Level scaling in FO3; All creatures have a certain level range that scales with the player. But if you progress a few levels, you will one-shot every raider or mole-rat that gave you serious headaches before. And previous mole-rat teritory will not suddenly be infested with deathclaws or something.

FO3 isnt really great as a melee character, i give you that.

The combat is the best ive ever experienced in any not-strictly-turnbased game. Ever. The VATS isnt optional, youll die a lot if you dont use it.

I loved Fallout 1 & 2 and i absolutely love FO 3. The sheer amount of places, quests - i finished it after 85 hours and have visited about 70% of the places (judging by the map).

The writing isnt as good / funny as in FO1/2, but thats the only, minor fault i can find with it.

They are quite watchable even on a 32 inch flat. I just watched 3 full mst3k episodes this weekend. No comparison to stage6 (RIP) of course. I wouldnt know why one would send an URL to xbmc, though. There are enough great scripts for viewing / browsing on the xbox itself (youtube2a, navi-x)
