I'm not a fan of scientology but I'm sure you're familiar with creation myths. Is a scientist with native american ancestry crazy because they follow a spiritual path that includes a myth that states the 'water spider' first brought fire to the inhabitants of earth? What about ancient greek or hindu (or anyone else) mythology?
I'm pretty confident that we have plans in place to minimize the impact Seoul should military intervention be necessary. We have some incredibly destructive conventional weaponry we could use without resorting to nukes. How hard would it be 1) map out known artillery locations 2) take them out 3) light up each piece of unknown N Korean artillery as soon as it exposes itself by firing on Seoul?
It seems to me the only way that the N Korea is a credible threat is if it is allowed to fester and grow in capability. They can barely get a missle off the ground at the moment. Other that smuggling in a nuke via ship to the coast I don't think they pose much of a credible threat today. Inaction would seem to be the only way to guarantee they continue to be a threat. This stance of wait and appease them is what allowed them to become (however slight right now) the nuclear threat that they are today. I'm not sure I would counsel more of the same.
Nothing is neat or simple when it comes to killing people. It always amounts to butchery and it's always ugly. The problem comes when your enemies feel confident that they can predict your response and that that response will lack teeth. Being reasonable is admirable. Being seen as reasonable isn't aways a good thing because it means you aren't feared. I'm not sure what else can expect North Korea to respond to but fear of retribution.
I have little confidence that the current US administration would do much of anything about a demostration of ability to strike North America. An actual strike sure they'd respond but dealing effectively with a posturing insecure little bully like N Korea? That isn't in their playbook.
Squirrels are often eaten here in the US. I've eaten plenty of them. Just have to watch out for the brains or you can get a relative of mad cow disease.
You don't want a burger made with less that 15-20% fat. It will taste like crap. There is a reason butchers add cow fat to venison when grinding it up. Nothing wrong with fat.
I'm pretty sure it does happen at a fairly large scale. Say something like 80% of people on food stamps... Everyone I know on food stamps trades groceries for other items. They have say 600-700 a month in food stamp credit available and only use 300-400 so what they do is they buy their friends food in exchange for a lower amount of money than the food actually costs.
I don't know your brother's situation but I do know several people on food stamps with a single child that get around 400-500/mo just in food stamps in my state. I know one lady with 3 kids that gets something like 1000 dollars/mo that makes good money as a postal worker and has a working husband though I'm not sure the marriage is 'official'.
Keeping in mind that we don't know the history of the family... given what I know this is a parental fail imo. The parents not the judge should have decided what "sentence" was appropriate.
Their kid definately showed poor judgement but the parent is the authority figure not the cops. This was just a stupid (maybe very very stupid) stunt to stay up past bedtime... I can't see sending my kid to jail for something like that. Make their lives miserable sure. Punish them sure. Cede your authority to the police and allow them to throw your kid into a juvenile detention center where god knows what kind of abuse will happen to them? No.
This is really the only answer. It's not like this is even taken "personally" by large companies. Speaking from experience threats of lawsuits and lawsuites are pretty much how one large company communicates with another...
I'm not sure how accurate that is... Nations record things like infant mortality differently. If you're relying on each country to report this themselves then you'd have to verify each countries methods. I'm pretty sure I've seen in the past that the US method for reporting this is expected to yield a higher number. Apart from that you'd probably also want to control for the lifestyles of those participating. This is something I'm certain they don't do and as everyone knows the average "American diet" is something of a byword for all things bad.
I don't know that I'd agree. I know lots of people that went to college and now consider themselves 'educated'. At the same time it would be a challenge to have a discussion with 80% of them centered in any of the areas of study you mentioned. Education should be a lifelong pursuit not some stamp you get next to your name when you're 23.
At least in my little corner of the US, the formal education system doesn't seem to have much at all to do with education.
Isn't the fiscal cliff basically what everyone has been moaning that they want to see from the democrats and republicans? Democrats want tax increases and republicans want spending cuts. Both sides need to give... If they were to compromise, how is the fiscal "cliff" all that different from that result?
Social security takes 12% of the pay of every eligable worker. It takes 12%!... If you allowed me to have that money on top of 401k to invest as I like I could retire at 35 so I don't find it especially impressive that they are only a little insolvent. That is never going to happen so personally I think we should meet current obligations for those over 60 or so, cut in half what we take from citizens for SS and then deny it to anyone who is not living in abject poverty. The reality is that it is a tax and it is welfare. Middle income people resonably well off have their pensions and 401k to lean on.
So if you assume the same economic gains from the tax cuts (and subsequent tax revenue generated) and at the same time add the money from the cuts back into the pot you don't have a deficit? That's wouldn't be a suprise.
I don't really follow most EU countries very closely but I've read of many people making the case for downgrading the UK credit rating to as much as A+ from AAA. I know the worst case scenarios that we all like to discuss for topics like climate change, collaps of EU/US etc. rarely come to pass and we'll probably never agree on this today... so I guess we'll give it 8-10 yrs and see where we are.
Why was this modded down? It's a well thought out post with absolutely no attacks in it against one side or the other. I've listend to several think tank / washington debates on this topic and people on both sides of the aisle agree that entitlement spending is unsustainable and the main cause of concern for the budget long term. Democrats want to see more revenue sure but the problem is mainly entitlement spending. Even Harry Reid today spoke of needing to comprimise with Republicans on Medicare reform and being willing to do so in revenue is increased a bit.
Since when does having an MBA qualify you for anything? People know when they're overextended. I guess you could argue that poor people are so incompetent they need to be protected from themselves. Poor people do tend to have more of the instant gratification types in their ranks and they make poor decisions... as a rule that's why they're poor. I still find it a contemptable position to take but I guess I see where you're coming from.
You're not wrong but 2000 are pulling in 10K or more a year just from Pandora. It's not exactly sole source of income territory but thats not bad when you consider that it doesn't take into account gigs, cd/mp3 and t-shirts sales from websites and stuff. It would be interesting if you could track the revenue they get indirectly after a new fan learns of them thorugh Pandora but I don't know how you'd do that.
This is true for states like Texas. I don't know that I've ever heard anyone brag too much about North Carolina tax structure. I didn't look it back up but if I recall correctly they're kind of middle of the pack to high side for a US state if I recall.
It most certainly would be direct violation of the 1st ammendment if he were in any way penalized for making the film. This isn't "there's a bomb about to go off everyone run!" in a crowded building. This is a guy expressing contempt for someone elses belief system. He can poke as much fun at anyone he desires as often as he likes.

Much of the reforms have been rolled back by the current administration. I could provide links but a simple google search will yield plenty.

Have you seen the average adult food stamp recipient in the US? I think most of them could live for 6 months on body fat alone.
Keeping in mind that we don't know the history of the family... given what I know this is a parental fail imo. The parents not the judge should have decided what "sentence" was appropriate.
