Liquid Television, et al didn't make MTV, they were the beginning of the end. MUSIC VIDIOS MADE MTV, that is what people wanted, that is why it was called MTV (the 'M' is for Music in case you don't remember) they used to have music on that channel, and vidios to go with the songs....
Yeah, I know I can't spell.
Because he went on public record many times prior to his death saying he NEVER wanted any of his works made into motion pictures. Most of his family (if you beleive rumors) won't even speak to the one who sold out the rights to the movies. If you honor Tolkien, you really should agree the moveis should never have been made.
Note, this is the first time I've posted a request to mod parent up or down. I am not posting as A.C. This rating was totaly unfair.

Suntse is posting an opinion about how commercialism has ruined, or at least tarnished, a great literary work. Many of regaurd Tolkien's work as, if not sacred, at least worthy of respect. Many of us will also agree that commercial exploitation is a bad thing(tm) So why is this flame bait? Because the user cursed? Are we that juvenile that we can't handle crude language? Or was this modded down because the moderator just likes the movies and didn't consider the message behind the post? Moderater, if you read this, please email me with the responce, or better yet, reply (this will undo your moderation if they havn't changed the rules).
Ok, Ok, I know I shouldn't but I'll bite. (Congratulations' you've successfully trolled, but you havn't fooled anyone.)
What the GPL seeks to do is make it so that as soon as there is any problem with a product, anyone with ability can fix the problem and then release an improved version. This works well in a buisness setting. Let's leave the whole computer arena for a second to hypothetical land.
Let's say J. Random Hacker decides to make a factory that makes a mechanical pencils. His plan is good, except for a few flaws, but he starts selling them anyway. Soon Joe Blow buys a pencil and realizes a quick effecient way to fix the problems. He can then fix the pencil and, if he wants, start production of the improved version. However, after Joe Blow's product has been out a while, Ford P, although he has never actualy bought a pencil has seen how they work and figures out a way to make the fully functional pencil work even better, it now doesn't require the user to click it, the lead extends automaticly, Ford P. can implement his improvement and everybody has functional pencils that they don't have to click themselves, and the person who makes each improvement gets credit for as long as his version is the best. That is how the GPL should work as well.
In a non-GPL world J. Random Hacker makes a pencil with some flaws, just the same as before. Joe Blow however doesn't have access to what he needs to figure out how to fix it because it is illegal to take it apart to see how it works. The world is stuck with faulty pencils.
Which one shows innovation?
Hint, it isn't the second.
IMHO About as much as taking a fish's bicycle away affects the price of tea in china. Except, perhaps, a little less so. Oh, not counting Great Britan, Blair seems to capitulated enough to the USA that GB would probably follow US anywhere.
OK, I can understand the privacy concern, but don't let it get out of hand. It is very unlikly these devices will come with a power supply that lasts much longer than the expected shelf life of the item being sold. Also, in order to comply with FCC regulations, they couldn't transmit huge amounts of power or the total field strength in the walmart (where thousands of such devices would constantly be in operation) would exceed safty limits. This basicly means that they won't be able to track you far or long. Far enough to catch a shoplifter, possibly, far enough to keep track of you by a chip in your shirt you purchased at walmart? Probably, but the equiptment to do so would be way to expensive to do routinely, and face it, if the situation is beyond routine, "they" have much better ways of tracking people that don't rely on a chip that can be sent to a different continint via airmail. Most importantly though, with a scale of operations the size of walmart, does anyone think that they intend to spy on everyone there (more than they already can with a security camera every other step)? Inside the store possibly, but the logistics of setting up a grid that can track the transmitters outside of walmart would be extremly impractical. This will probably be what it is supposed to be, a way track not people but merchandise, which has no right to privacy anyway, and to catch people who want to get away with some of it. The only simi-paranoid-rallying use for this that they MIGHT be able to collect aggragate patterns to organize the walmarts for maximum impulse shopping success. But doesn't Kroger and many other grocery stores (with "discout" cards) do this already, yes, there was some minor outrage at first, but has anybody's rights to privacy been significantly damaged by these peaces of plastic? I doubt it.
I know EXACTLY why they always say this. Geeks/Nerds arn't better people, really, than jocks. However, instead of physical one-upmanship, geeks tend to try for MENTAL one-upmanship. Thus, whenever this topic comes up on a nerd/geek fourm, SOMEBODY has to come along and show they know more than somebody else by explaining the difference in origional and US meanings of the word. Is mental one-upmanship bad? No, such attitudes fuel much of the development of civilization, it is the same attitudes that drive the increase in technology, it is among the reasons the human race survived long enough to subdue the earth. It is magnificant! Is it childish too? Yes.
Where does that leave my stance on the issue? You figure it out.
OK, I admit, while making my point the thought crossed my mind. It is a fairly weak point in the argument, but not an indefencable one. First of all, let prepose that as it is impossible to judge the mind the makers of the Anime, speculation on motive is irrelavant as unprobable. What that leaves us to discuss is what should be discussed, the final product. Your argument, thus stated, would be something similar to the following I beleive:
Anime is discrimatory against women, because it objectifies them. This is evident because they are often dipected light or reavealing clothing.
From this argument one can draw the following rubric: if an art form dipicts a gender in a way generaly stimulating to members of the oppisite gender, it is unfair to the portrayed gender.
I think few who are familiar with Anime will say that they do not do their utmost to portray the males in "accidently" provocative poses, attire that makes them sexualy stimulating to females, and possess attitudes often considered attractive to females. For examples of this idea I want to mention Escoflone, where you seem to see Van more often shirtless than not, Dragonball, which often portrase the male hero as totaly nude (yes it is a child, and not sexualy intended, but as a case of how nudity can be excepted as non-dehumanizing it still makes the point) and Kenhen because Sano seems to be completly unable to keep his upper clothing from slipping aside revealing his manly studly chest. Although there are other examples I think those three, from three very different Animes shows a pattern that women are not treated differently than men.
Oh, and if you want to bring up the Animes where men arn't treated in any way as sexual objects, I'll bring up the Animes where women arn't either.
Yes, but isn't the words "geek" and "nerd" also basicly terms we wear with pride, but are stolen from words with very negitive conotations? The general meaning of these words to many is STILL negitive. Is this not about the same thing? I say just put a blurb explaining the origions of the word Otaku, and its differing meanings, and let the Anime fans decide if they want to call themselves that.
I'm sure this explains why so many Anime's have women heroines, whereas most American cartoons, especialy action cartoons, have stereotypcial male heros protecting helpless, or at best sidekick class women? Considering the Japaneese culture is less tolarant of woman's rights than the USA in most ways, it is IMHO amazing the positive image of women that many Anime's portray. Note, I'm not talking about the XXX rated stuff, XXX rated stuff in ANY format tends to be crude and potentialy offensive, that has nothing to do with the fact that some is Anime.
(IANAL) According to the bastardized US law, trade secrets have legal protection against unauthorized disclosure. If somebody in the Coca Cola company who had signed a nondisclosure agreement gave me the formula for coke, I couldn't use it legaly. So basicly, declaring something a trade secret in the US is almost identical to patenting it without the minor inconvienince of the possibility of the patent running out. (If you care, the only difference is if you don't protect a trade secret, you can't go back and get it back legaly, you can't say turn a blind eye for a while then sue for infringement)
Um Old English is directly Branched from old Low German, (Old low German would still be understandable to most native German speakers) So unless you want to say that modern English isn't really based on Old English (if you want to make that point go ahead, I'll follow up) you pretty much have to admit that modern English is derived from German. Or I suppose you could say that old Low German isn't really german, but that would be equatble to saying that the KJV bible or the works of Shakespere arn't written in English.
Is there a linguic scholor who can tell me how many places I messed up? I'm trying to remember stuff I learned in High School.
I know most of you know this already, but for those who don't the USA is one of just a few countries that use a point only to seperate whole numbers from decimal numbers, in many countries, including Germany if memory serves, you use the point as an American would a comma in a number, and a comma to seperate whole and decimal parts of a number.
Some terminology is meant to confuse the consumer, some is not. I think that the examples I give, including "unlimited" are not intended to confuse and most people who go into the buisness deals know exactly what "unlimited" means. If we want to get techincal on buisnesses having to mean everything they say, Wal-Mart's policy "You Must Be Satisified, our Policy Guarentees it" which is all over the store should allow me to go up to a cashier and say, "I won't be satisified untill I have some really great sex" and she (or he!) would be obliged to comply. Wal-Mart doesn't mean this and shouldn't be expected to act in such a manner. There is such a thing as common sense stores shouldn't be required to define every term they use, if the term is generaly understood by the market, any more than McDonalds should be required to put "Warning Contents May Be Hot" on coffee cups. They are so required because of frivolous lawsuits and people without common sense, but that doesn't mean it is a good thing(tm).
Hmm, Although you may have a point technicaly, I think most people understand that, so far as ISP's go, "unlimited" means unlimited time, in contrast with those ISP's who sell internet time by the hour. I think this is generaly understood by the market and really isn't any more of a gripe point than "pure" olive oil (which is a distinction in grade of oil, not percentage of forign matter) or "Annual" intrest rates, that still compound monthly. All three terms are generaly understood by the market to have certain meanings and trying to change the requirements on using the terms would add more confusion to the market, not make terms clearer.
Actually, I was one of those mature little kids that everyone was shocked to find out how young I was for a while, NOW when I get on everyone thinks I'm young, go fig.

Ah muds, the universal destroyer of time. The great addiction: You thought cocaine was addictive, you've never gotten into a mud. I remember the first time I sat down in the afternoon to play a mud, and noticed it was late morning before I logged out... (I would have been in ~7th grade at the time). Then there was one time I went to the computer lab, where my class was supposed to be having a final exam, about an hour early, I logged on to a mud, and missed the exam because I didn't notice the entire class had come in, taken the exam and left while I was on the mud. I failed that class because I missed an exam that I was in the room it was being proctored in. Ah, the memories...
No! I don't have a problem! I don't need your 12 steps I can quit mudding anytime I want to! (Gonnna go mud now)
Lilo and Stitch was, IMHO, Disney's best picture since Walt died. However, no, there still wasn't much competition, Spirited Away still blew L&S out of the water. Any other year, I would have been completly on the L&S bandwagon, I really wish it had been released a year earlier so both films could have won something.
