Nothing new under the sun. In Japan the problem has been known for ages as keitai manbiki or degitaru manbiki, meaning "Cell phone shoplifting". They go to a shop and when they find an interesting article on a magazine, instead of buying the dead tree they take a pic of the page and then walk away.
