Uber's chief executive is calling for Washington state to develop a "portable benefits system" to give contract workers in the so-called gig economy access to health care and retirement planning accounts.
Anybody can already sign up for an IRA or Roth on their own. What exactly is this CEO asking for?
But those are active services they provide and it costs them to maintain those things.. Apple Carplay is just... there. Once installed, there is nothing they have to do, and no extra cost to them. In fact, they have to disable the Carplay remotely somehow at the end of the free year if you don't pony up.
I agree. I was kind of excited to get a new car with an interface for my iPhone. I plugged it in and was thoroughly underwhelmed. Instead of seeing my screen, I just saw a few random useless apps that didn't work as well as what was on my phone. I really wanted to use google maps for directions/traffic, but I guess that isn't going to happen. I haven't used Apple Carplay since...
I'm much more sensitive to the smell of car exhaust now and find it more annoying.
What does this have to do with owning an EV? Unless you were running your exhaust into your cabin for some weird reason on your old ICE car, I don't see why you would notice a difference.
Electronic tracking of sales tax rates indexed by shipping address makes it much simpler to handle these days.
There is one other sticky problem that needs to be sorted out: What items are to be taxed? In California, most food isn't taxed. But some foods are (i.e., going to a restaurant). So a merchant must not only know the particular sales tax rate (which isn't too difficult these days), AND whether or not their particular item is taxed in that jurisdiction.
People all over the world accept bitcoin, so it has a much broader base of support than any state sanctioned currency
I think you are misusing the term 'broad' in this statement. Broad would indicate that I could go anywhere and have a good chance of finding somebody in another country that uses bitcoin. If only 1% of the population/businesses on the planet accept bitcoin, then it doesn't matter how many individual countries they are located in, it still doesn't have a 'broader base of support'. I'd bet that I'd have a much better chance of being able to use my US dollar in a random spot on the globe than being able to use a bitcoin...
Just to be clear: you made this comment on an article about solar AND STORAGE.
You:
The article was about solar and storage replacing gas peaker plants.
It is very sad for you that you struggle to keep all of these concepts in mind at once, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE YOUR OWN COMMENTS. It renders your comments... more stupid than they already are.
First, I'm going to bet that they err on the side of not placing drivers on the commercial list.
Why would you believe that? In fact, if their supercharger networks starts to get overused, they would have every reason to err on the side of placing as many drivers as possible ON the commercial list.
"...his trial has not yet been scheduled. "
Soooo... what happens if he is never convicted, and the government has to return his assets? They no longer have the bitcoins, and if the price doubles between now and then, they would be out millions of dollars to repurchase them to return. And if they say, "Here is the original money we made of the bitcoins", he could rightly argue in court that he was not returned what was taken.
I'm not sure how that is illegal, either. If I own a business, I most certainly have the right to tell a homeless person sleep or taking a dump on the sidewalk in front of my doorway (if you think this doesn't happen, you've never been to San Francisco), to kindly move along. Now, I can't forcibly remove them, but the robots aren't doing this either.
The really funny/hypocritical thing that ISPs do is to boast about how great it is to stream video (Netflix, youtube, etc.) over their 'blazin' fast internet!'. Why, every member of your house can be streaming their own thing at the same time!!!! You would think that if video streaming was just SUCH a horrible drain on them that they would avoid any mention of streaming video.
Yes, but daytime is when you should be generating and storing it, not sucking from your batteries (which you will need that night when there is no sun). Unless you plan your storage to account for this extra power (which will add to the overall system cost).
...for illegally operating on a public right-of-way...
If it's public property, how can you be illegally on it? I know you can take over/block public sidewalks (well, unless you are homeless, then SF and other liberal cities don't give a rip), but how is a roaming robot illegally on a public sidewalk?
Google and Facebook combined had around 30 billion in profit last year. There are 125 million households in the US. So even if these two companies gave every penny of profit, you can still only give each household less than $250. People that suggest this 'basic income' fail at math. Every. Single. Time.
(Bacillus aryabhatti, collected from a practice football field used by the Oakland Raiders, grew fastest.)
Seeing the fans in the stands, I have no doubt that the Oakland/LosAngeles/Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders are the germiest organization in pro football. As a 49er fan, I just couldn't resist taking a shot at the Raiders:-)

Tesla proved that it's possible to make an EV that's an object of desire to average car buyers.
How do you consider $70k+ vehicles as something for an 'average' car buyer?

Well, don't you WANT them to check that their packaging is working correctly?

Wow, you sure do like to type things. If it makes you feel better, we can just both pretend that I read any of that.

Oil has already peaked.
Wow, a post from 1970. I didn't know /. existed way back then...
To make that many watts, you need a bigger power source, BOOM, you get into the exact same rocket equation you have with chemical engines.
Or a combination of nuclear/solar could be used to produce power to drive the ion engine.

Yeah, it's not like NASA could ever develop something like an ion engine https://www.nasa.gov/centers/g...
I usually take my old ones somewhere out in the woods or in a field remote...
Well, I guess this isn't TOO terrible...
...and douse them with diesel and light them, and then get away.
Wait, what? Why would you waste fuel, possibly start an out of control fire AND fill the air with toxic smoke? Just leave them there!
Anyone banging their head in the wall has psychologically induced brain trauma.
No, that is physically induced brain trauma. Regardless of WHY your head hit the wall, it is the physical impact that did the damage.

If natural gas furnaces are good, why not just leave the heat pumps in place, and have the furnaces kick in once it drops below a certain temperature?
