I recently switched to sphinx (http://www.sphinxsearch.com/) its written in C and compiles nicely on my linux servers, indexes documents at crazy speeds and theres piles of options
I highly recommend above (use it on 200,000 queries a day vertical search engine for one of our sites)
€ir$cum? i told their sales people where to stick it many years ago, UPC 20mbit cable with no caps is much faster and reliable and none of this nonsense
btw I run a site along the lines and I have an interesting setup, the database server is in one country and the web frontend is in another with secure tunnel between so if someone does a traceroute to the site and then goes datacenter and pulls the server out of rack all they get is a proxy, its far from perfect but at least the database is safe
