Youd'd thing with the InterNet rising to the top of the world economy, you might see some some class in its limited physcial constructions. However these data centers are as dull and drab as any industrial construction.
A first guess is that InterNet commerce eventually will decrease the number physical stores that need be constructed. However, there are some interesting anomalies along the way. During Web 1.0 some merchants like Amazon and Webvan invested heavily in new warehouses. One succeeded and the other went bankrupt.
Now we see the search engines and cloud computers are building massive data centers around the world. In the long run they may reduce or replace corporate data centers.
Even 1% false positives or negatives in a huge application will lead to lots of problems.
An auxiliary question is whether machine accuracy exceeds humans. People make mistakes too.
Thats just a silly stereotype. When I lived in China some decades ago it took about three days for the "sameness" to disappear from my perception. It was a lot harder for buildings however. They do really look the same.
The Mauder Sunspot Minimum in the 17th century has been arguably tied to the Little Ice Age, a cool period. The new 11-year sunspot cycle #24 has been very slow to start as predicted in late 2007. There have been as few as five sunspots in all of 2008. During the active part of the cycle there are up to 150 at a time. The sun is about 0.1% weaker during the cycle minimum. Perhaps this correlates with cooler weather. There are better tools now for tying solar weather with earth climate and maybe someone will find a causal tie.
Theres lots of "slave jobs" (minimum wage) in IT on campus, help profs etc. That way you arent really an entry-levelperson naymore once you graduate.
maybe happens every few centuries

The Quietest Sun

There was a quiet period in the 16th and 17th century. It corresponded with a brief global cooling. I wonder if scientists have looked for other quiet periods. Most of the studies have been the opposite, suggesting solar cycles hundreds of millions of years ago. Looking for "absence of evidence" is harder to establish scientifically.
Its pretty common in the oil industry from people I hear to have the "annual lecture" or tested video course on ethics, mainly that dealing with US & foreign government officials. Its sort of an inside joke when it doesnt work.
My father used play math quiz games with us when were young. Made it fun and challanging. I havent heard other people do this. And he was Italian, not Asian.
Writing comics is damned if do and damned if you dont. The grind to meet deadlines is daunting. Yet if you stop for a while the creative juices may start forcing you draw again.
In Salem Massachusetts. They're more civilized in Afghanistan.
So it in a movie last year. Wink. Wink.
Nasa missions took three days. But life support was important.
The slowest moon mission was an ESA moon mission that took 14 months to reach the moon via ion-drive. It cost very little in fuel.

thats why I think the original article is wrong.
By definiton a supercomputer is a computer within order of magnitude of the world's fastest computer. Last year's model dont count.
Pirates and bankers are parasitic. Neither creates new technology or wealth.

$200K salary and $300K office, staff overhead. The prof is expected to pul in that much in grants.
Plato promoted a society run by philosopher-thinkers. Those would be the equivalent of technocrats today.

The largest tech VC firm estimated over a quarter of startups will die due to capital problems in a recent Wired story.
I suspect this is a "version 0.1" company that never dealt with real customers before.
I remember when televison was accused of rotting one's mind.
It was originally scheduled as a 2008 Xmas movie, but deferred to summer 2009 for marketing reasons. Its pretty much in the can already.

Like a simple video game. That will motivate much of the class.

They had live TV, but small images. Unfortunately the head investigator Steve Benten died a few years ago.
Its a content site, nto a carrier, so it bears responsibility. Maybe that will help to clear up some of this web garbage.
