So that link I posted (http://www.atoomspionage.com/Irakrecent.htm) from JULY 2003 about them finding more parts for a centrifuge buried in a physicists garden...?
Yes, yes, I know. BUSHITLER! QUAGERMIRE! STOLEN ELECTION! TWICE! Spare me. I'm sick of the spittle on my face from you raving fucking lunatics out there that can't handle the idea that maybe, just maybe, the CIA, KGB, and MI6 could have possibly been justified in thinking that Iraq was a real threat to the world.
Now, if 1.8 tons of low enriched uranium and plans for a centrifuge to to make weapons grade uranium are entirely LOST on you well... whatever. Do me a favor and go piss in an electrical outlet.
Dude, the link you posted even SUPPORTS what I'm saying!
He said the number of international staff on the ground had also increased with about 50 UN international personnel in Banda Aceh alone
50?! How much money has UNICEF got for this operation? Isn't this a little disproportionate?
Tell you what, go find a picture of a guy with the fancy blue helmet handing food and water out to people in the tsunami area. You can't. They aren't there yet!
I'm not sure how I got modded down to 0; Troll. That's a first for me. How anybody can say with a straight face that donating to UNICEF is a good idea when there's far, far better and less corrupt charities out there is beyond me.
UNICEF. Check this guy who's on the ground and watching the UN's presense first hand: http://diplomadic.blogspot.com/
Hint: The only way to get away from the UN there is to go where there's actually people in need. Hang out in 5 star hotels and you'll be swamped by 'em.
I'm ashasmed to know that my country is where their head quarters sit.
Square root of 5800? 76.1mph. Pretty sure that's about how fast you're going after 700 feet. Just from memory, I've forgotten a lot of physics. Now, if you think a 700 foot drop into water is survivable.. well... at that point I don't think it matters much if it's concrete or water.
Besdies, have you SEEN one of these wingsuits? Go to birdman.com, they're the market leader. You are NOT going to want to swim in this thing. Especially not with a rig on your back.
Here, check this: http://justinbuist.org/images/120kmh_at_3meters.mo v
That guy is just a few feet from being able to land the thing on that slope, IMHO. However, he posesses some modicum of common sense it seems.
This has almost been done before (see the video). All that's needed is: a) A slightly slower speed helps (slightly different suit than the Birdman stuff). b) Some practice to perfect your flaring technique. c) Somebody bat-shit crazy enough to think this up. d) Somebody insanely bat-shit crazy to try it.
After watching a video I found online, I think this guy qualifies for friggen nuts: http://media.hugi.is/hahradi/fyndnar/jeb_2003big.w mv
The actual numbers, IIRC, are 1 in 100,000 jumps are fatal. The VAST majority of these actually operator error while nearing the ground on high performance canopies. For instance taking a steep turn using your risers when you're too low and smacking the ground at 60-70mph.
Malfs on your main parachute are 1 in 1000 from what I understood. Those are packed up in 5-10 minutes in a rather hurried fashion. Your reserve is carefully packed painstakinly by a FAA certified rigger who spends 30-45 minutes working on it VERY carefully. The reserve is also repacked every 120 days by FAA regulations.
I don't know the stats, but a double malfunction is a VERY rare occurance. It's more than likely "operator error" that causes the death of a skydiver.
No one ever said anything about 100mph+. The guy's got a winged suit on. He's most certainly not going to be travelling at 100mph+ unless he deliberately holds his legs and arms in. Nor is anyone suggesting he's going to belly flop.
Bit of a misconception here -- wingsuits do not make you go "slow" they just change the direction! Those buggers are going to be pushing him FORWARD at 65-70mph while decending at 30mph. Basically, this guy is going to have to flare himself like a plane or ram-air canopy would right before he smacks into the ground. I'm wagering it'll be on an incline.
You're right, he won't be doing 100mph -- probably more like 90mph until that flare.
Nonsense! He just moves his limbs and breaks the spin. Even with traditional planes most spins are recoverable, given enough altitude.
I've never flown a wingsuit, and I did less than 20 jumps when I figured I'd give the sport a try, but, you're mistaken.
Objects in motion tend to stay in motion!
If you're spinning and you collapse the wings, you're still going to be spinning. Heck, you go "cannonball" style and you'll probably be whipping all over the place! That's not fun, and seeing green-blue-green-blue alternating about 3 times a second gets disorienting.
You don't naturally fall in a straight line without any spin or rotation. You'd got to form your body properly to do that. Going "fetal" isn't going to help you.
Yes. Wingsuits right now are used with a parachute to slow once the glide is over because wingsuits don't really slow you enough to safely land. If this guy's successful, it's possible we'll see a wingsuit as a backup for a parachute, but more possible that we're going to see wingsuiting taking over for traditional skkydiving in most markets, including military applications. Wingsuits, if this guy's successful, seem a lot less error and failure prone than the traditional 'chute after sufficient training.
Dude, did you have a Cheech & Chong Christmas? Put down the pipe, homes!
Parachutes are pretty much idiot proof -- or about as idiot proof as you can get in the environment we're talking about. Exit plane, pop chute. Is it a circle/rectangle a few seconds later? Good, don't hit anything and you're kosher. Not good? Pull the reserve.
Don't get me wrong, a nice cushy landing on target with a sporting parachute takes some skill. Some of the smaller ones come in pretty fast (45mph-ish) and let you do some neat tricks. Risky, but probably quite fun. The idiot proof ones bring you in at 15mph.
A wingsuit landing? There's a REASON this hasn't been done before! He's not creating some uber wingsuit to do this. A new design, yes, but we're still talking about something that's sending him 70mph forward and letting him fall at around (probably) 30mph. This design, from what I gather at the DropZone.com forum post on it, may have reduced the forward speed without making him fall too fast.
Backup to a parachute my ass! Coming in head first at 65mph forward and 30mph down? IIRC you're supposed to have about 150 jumps in before you start running wingsuits at altitude. A wingsuit is not a beginner piece of equipment, and landing one -- well, nobody's done it yet.
I ran across this video a year or so back, when I was actually doing that jumping out of planes thing.
I believe it's of Loic Jean-Albert, the fellow that shot the photos in the article. I could be wrong, but pretty sure the guy in the video is named Loic. What the fellow does is jump out of a helicopter over a mountain that he had picked out because of the angle of slope. He matches the slope after he picks up speed and comese about 9 feet from the surface. Granted, he's flying at about 70mph, but quite honestly if he had some kind of sled/sky on his chest I betcha he could have put himself down on that mountain.
What you're missing here, dave420, is that while the device isn't INTENDED of us geeks it would behoove everybody involved if they released an uncrippled version that would actually run our geeky crap. -I- might actually find a use for such a thing with that small form factor and come up with some nifty projects for one.
$200 is a drop in the bucket for a lot of us geeks. With a different BIOS it'd be usable by us.
What you don't seem to understand is that there isn't a limited supply of these things. On the contrary the prices for the 3rd world would DROP as it became more cost effective to make them as supply state-side to geeks increased. You are aware that as things are manufactured in greater quantities that the prices naturally drop, right?
Respectfully, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the basics of US operation at the federal level, sir. I presume you are a foreigner, from the tone of your message, but take heart in knowing that a large (probably 80-90%) of the US populace also agrees with you. Most people simply just "miss the boat" on such matters.
If you are concerned that a collection of data will be TURNED against you, your problem isnt the data, but those who would wield it.
You are correct in this matter -- but the problem is that we'll never know who in the future will have that data. Yes, we're a Republic, but we still stand the chance of electing officals that are absolutely horrible to the populace. Hitler was elected by the populace! That crap can and has happened. The less information the Federal government has the better.
They absolutely must prove that under no circumstances can they do their jobs without said data for me to reliquish it.
Nowhere in the Constitution is education mentioned. They have NO business in it and they have NO reason to collect data on the matter. I don't want the feds knowing what college classes I took, what guns I may own, what my sexual preference is, or how much money I made. It's none of their damned business frankly.
Simply, if you USofAmericans cant trusted the government/buracracy/judiciary to uphold the safety-clauses, shouldnt YOU ALREADY have a fucking problem.
I think this sentiment is a big reason why most of the US population, ufortunately, and the world at large, fails to understand WHY privacy/liberty advocates rally against the above bullcrap.
Simply put Federal government is a problem by it's very nature. If you disagree I would urge you to read the Federalist Papers and the Anti-Federalist papers penned by the Founders of the US. The Anti-Federalists simply stated, through a series of papers, that the Federal government would grow out of control and gather more powers than delegated. The Federalists figured a strict Constitution would hold it in check. Well, the Anti-Federalists were right. An issue such as this wouldn't have even surfaces if they weren't.
This is why I am so astounded at politics in America. If you are so certain that a database of College students will be exploited -- even with promised to the contrary -- you are far FAR behind the curve on your problem.
We're not certain that such a violation would happen -- but it is a possibility. Are you certain that I would misuse your personal information? Well -- how about you fax over your bank records and receipts for everything you purchased in the past few months. I'll maybe help you sort out your budget. You're not certain I'll misuse the information after all. How about your diet and excersise schedules? Send 'em on over -- I'll aggregate the data to make a perfet diet/excercise routine for the populace after a while. It's for the common good, you know.
Sorry, I misunderstood you. It's just that I've seen enough from the "left" that it's possible that somebody would expouse such thoughts and be entirely serious.
I hate to break it to you but the conservatives have more guns and they use them a lot more than liberals and geeks. They kill a lot of animals with them in particular. Why exactly do you think the right wing is so keen on protecting gun ownership. Hint, its not to keep the government in line, its so they can smack down the liberals and minorities if they ever get out of line.
Wow, there's a sterotype that's way out of line with reality.
Yes, conservatives tend to own some guns here and there. This is actually more appropriately attributed to their rural upbringing, typically, which happens to coincide wih their conservative upbringings and later on decisions in life.
I'm not sure what you mean by more than the "geeks" actually. I'm a shooter, I own guns, and I hang out at shooting ranges. I'm well aware of your typical "bubba" sterotype, with a hunting rifle and a shotgun, but they're actually very nice guys by and large. Gruff sometimes, but nice guys.
The ones you see our there with semi-automatic military pattern firearms? They're often just liberty minded folk. More then often they work in a professional white color job -- they're even geeks quite often! I'm one of 'em.
I've never seen a gun owner advocate shootin' liberals. Sorry, ain't happening.
The only thing trending in favor of geeks is they may have superior skills in first person shooters and flight simulators but I'm not sure those skills translate in to meat space.
They don't translate in the least bit, unless you've got an FPS in mind that shows you how to coordinate magazine changes in your rifle, field strip and clean it as fast as possible in the dark, etc.
If you think playing Counterstrike, or whatever, is going to teach you how to tear apart an AK in the dark and reassmble it in 45 seconds... you've lost touch with reality.
The only thing an FPS will teach you is: conserve ammo and change mags when you're low.
You're missing trigger control, sight picture, weapons maneuvering, determing when to use lethal force (or target idenfication), and a whole mess of other stuff.
Odds are you won't be able to load a magazine with any proficiency your first time trying it. I couldn't, and it took a little time to get used to it and make it a 2nd nature. Double stack rifle mags are easier, and pretty much brain dead, but pistol mags are tougher. Eyes closed and in the dark I can do it like I'm wiping my ass, but I've done it Lord knows how many thousands of times.
The "bubba" conservatives aren't going to shoot you, and they've usually got ZERO interest in understanding that their arms can be turned on actual human targets.
Your FPS skills mean nothing.
Your fellow liberty minded gun owning geeks are a group you entirelly forgot about it seems, or weren't aware they existed.
Very powerful if you ask me. I used it on a project back in 2000-2001 and was pleased with how it turned out at the time. I'm sure the current product is much, much, better than it was back then.
Double-barreled shotguns aren't too common, unless you're a trap shooter. Sure, you see 'em on the movies all the time, but a decent one will run you much more than a pump-action shotgun. Your pump shotgun allows you to shove 4-5-6-7 maybe 8 shells up into a tube. You then rack the slide (everybody knows what it sounds like it seems) -- and you've got one in the chamber and extras 'on tap'.
It's a LIFO buffer... so you'd shove the lead 000 Buck in there first, then the rubber rounds last.
Or, just cram the whole thing full of 000 Buck, chamber a round, and shove one more back in. That'll do ya.
Did not relize the 68 law covered all foreign made full auto's, so how did full auto AK's make it into the US, even if every GI from 1962-68 picked them up off the field in Vietnam, they couldn't get them back home without some trickery, and there's no way uncle sam would have allowed their legal importation prior to 86, we were trying to starve the Soviets?
Ya ever wonder why you don't see full auto AK's for sale anywhere?
After WWII the idea of "war relics" was pretty much shot to crap. Apparently the US government didn't think it was proper to let troops trained with weapons of military use to bring weapons of military use back home. Actually it was done more to curb any "imperialistic" image that we had. We don't want to make it appear that our solidiers are killing other soldiers just for their guns. Fair enough.
Since the AK-47 went into production in '49 and the GCA of '68 happened, well, in '68 -- there really wasn't ever a period for US Citizens to import the firearm in question. For one, I'd imagine the US population wasn't exactly enthralled with the idea of owning Commie weapons in that time period. Second, I don't think the Russians would have ALLOWED their arms manufacturer's to send weapons over here. The Ismetch plant was busy cranking out AK's for their satelite states and their main army in that time period.
That's what makes it so easy, IMHO, to make the AK-47 clone to look to evil. NOBODY in the US (save for pershaps very very few examples) has a legit one. The only people with actual full auto AK-47's in this country are criminals -- like the North Hollywood bank robbery deal. To the non-gun person they look the same and everybody thinks it's a machine gun. The ONLY time you see them on the news they make it look like an actual AK-47 which is a true full-auto machine gun.
Well, I didn't see this mentioned by anybody: Rubber balls out of a shotgun. Somebody said rock salt earlier and got modded 5: Funny. WTF is that?
Here's a webpage that sells a number of 12 gauge rounds: http://www.ammoman.com/webstore_12GA.htm
Shipping with him is great, and the prices (at least on the other stuff -- I don't buy enough 12 gauge loads to know) is very well priced.
You've got plenty of suggestions on how to DETER people away from the residence. Motion sensor lights, dogs, stickers, etc.
Once they're in your house it's a whole nother matter. It's nice and quaint that you don't want them to be injured. Bust into the area where I'M sleeping for the night (this goes for when I'm on the road) and odds are injury will be the least of your worries.
I'm sure every gun hating hoplophobe on Slashdot is going to call me friggen Rambo for this setup, but here's what I run:
Remington 870 (cheap, and with the synthetic stocks and rubber recoil pad very managable) -- if you can find one get a smooth bore barrel in 18-20". Odds are the off-the-shelf stuff is going to be 20". Stick with that. I load with 4 rounds (pretty limited mag) of 000 Buck. I do NOT keep one in the chamber myself BUT if that was my primary HD (Home Defense gun) I sure as heck would.
On top of that I keep a good pistol at the bedside. I actually tend to change this out now and again with various models as it depends on what I'm practicing with most at the time. However, that's kept "Condition 1" -- one round in the chamber and safety on.
Explanation:
Shotgun is there in the event that I get some kind of advanced warning of an intruder. My door is solid steel and the deadbolt is pretty danged solid. Odds are I'll hear you banging on it a bit. In that event, shotgun comes off the floor and a round goes into the chamber. Time provided the spare round goes into the tube and I hunker down behind my bed for cover and line 'er up on the door. Oh, yes, I live alone. Whole situation changes when you've got kids, but since you're writing and your mother lives alone I presume you're all moved out.
If you get in instantly (window crashes, or door takes one solid whack) I'm just rolling off the bed and grabbing my pistol.
Now, if I wanted to take a "feel good and don't hurt anybody" approach I'd do the following:
870 stocked with 2 shells of the rubber shot stuff. One IN THE FRIGGEN CHAMBER! Here's why: Presuming you have a house of reasonable size it will NOT be immediately apparent which room is your mother's bedroom. Racking that shotgun, while it MAY scare them off, will only cause them to draw their pistols and proceed accordingly. No need to give them a head's up. Behind those two rounds of rubber balls keep some 000 buck shot. If they're still advancing after 2 rounds of rubber balls (presuming they DIDN't shoot you mother while she wasted valuable time with a less-than-lethal-hope-this-works method) then hopefully the 000 buck'll do the job and make them STOP!
You don't shoot to kill. I don't train for that. You shoot to STOP. Maybe the rubber balls will work. We KNOW the 000 Buck works (or 00 Buck, suit to your tastes)
Ammoman offers a variety of them. When you see "Tactical Law Enforcement" next to the names dont' be afraid. That that really means is "docile, won't rip your shoulder off loads only good for maybe 25 yards against human targets" -- which is EXACTLY what you want when arming a woman.
20 gauge is suitable also -- but I'd stick with a pump for reliability.
I'm a geek, but there's no way in HELL I'd be able to sleep at night if I told my mom that I thought her best bet was to sit there with a media player hooked up to a computer and motion sensor that'd play the sound of a shotgun racking if she died. No thank you.
A lot in life boils down to what you would REGRET MORE later on the down the road. I wouldn't want to be the guy at my mom's funeral thinking "Man, I thought that
March, 2003.. okay.

I've never seen a gun owner advocate shootin' liberals. Sorry, ain't happening.
There's plenty though. Wanna join the club?

Very powerful if you ask me. I used it on a project back in 2000-2001 and was pleased with how it turned out at the time. I'm sure the current product is much, much, better than it was back then.
Smashing Pumpkins Into Small Spiles of Putrid Debris
You sure about that?
You want my job?
Follow me around for a day. You'll change your tune.
In the future you may want to slide the words "the movie" in there somewhere.
This story is a week old. Last I heard Jeb declared the ruling invalid and Nader's on the ballot.
Actually.. most don't.
