    Long term option? Not at all. The oil in Alaska and offshore doesn't last forever. It is a mid term solution at best.

    Chrome, Subversion contributions and the bulk of Android are examples. I guess I exaggerated a little, but they aren't completely closed source.

    Whenever you pay more than the distribution cost for a piece of software, it is overpriced. Zeros and ones does not cost anything to produce, more than the duplication and transfer cost.

    If only I had mod points to bury you to oblivion. It takes considerable time, effort and resources for engineers to design, write and test software. There is no way that paying the bare minimum to cover distribution costs will pay the salaries of everyone involved in developing a product - the zeros and ones don't randomly arrange themselves. Whilst many developers volunteer their time as a hobby, you can't expect everyone to do so.

    They mentioned that Google makes money from their open source software. They do have a lot of OSS, but it doesn't make much money at all. Therefore, Google probably shouldn't be in the list.

    You can get a similar deal here for around 10/15 pounds a month from most operators. The difference here is you are paying for a single day's usage.

    Assembly is platform specific. When dealing with a specific platform, the number of bits in a byte doesn't change.

    The main benefit(?) of digital has been more channels.

    The main benefit to consumers is less noise in the signal, drastically improving the quality. Resolution isn't the only measure of quality.

    The rectangle is also a primitive in OpenGL. Also, with the correct viewport settings a triangle would still be sufficient to cover the entire screen.

    Scottish names tend to use either, it isn't exactly exclusive. And that was effectively my point - just because one group has a convention doesn't mean they can claim complete ownership over it for future use.

    The Mc prefix is also used in Scottish naming conventions, what if someone was selling Scottish chocolate cakes online? Common patterns are not enforceable trademarks.

    You know, I still don't understand why there is even such a thing as a user agent string. That is, I can see why i.e. Microsoft would want such a thing but I do not see any way that it's in the interests of users. If we really want standards and we really want openness, having no way for a Web server to determine what the browser is can only advance this goal. Then the only concern is whether that browser is standards-compliant.

    At the time of writing, this only achieves 3, Insightful? Come on mods, be a little more generous...

    I thought the idea of Ubuntu was to provide a community-based GNU/Linux distro by improving the experience, not just to do whatever it takes to get more users. Displaying a EULA is not common practice in the GNU/Linux world, and displaying one isn't the best way to improve the experience.

    Be it military, with imminent threats of destruction from a nation that has no way to harm anyone but themselves, yet turning a blind eye to nations that could (Iraq vs. North Korea for example?)

    Umm, you're wrong. Look at the PS3. It's meant to have OTHER OPERATING SYSTEMS installed on it.

    There is a difference between meant to have and supported. Installing Linux isn't a requirement, and the DRM in the game doesn't affect the Linux install or the XMB install (unless it requires a firmware update, which is a Sony OS upgrade for Sony hardware, rather than a 3rd party hack on top of a Microsoft system).

    These "better languages" are easier to use which allows for less experienced coders to perform the tasks. This is not an ideal world we live in.
