That's about what I remember from a TV show about the LHC a while ago; roughly about 1 m in diameter (what's that in foot, 10 square feet?), 7m (23 feet) long. If the beam is directed into it, it heats up to about 800 degrees C (~1700 degrees F according to Google) in an instant.
I can picture the scientist going "Operation room, the pizza's a bit stale, and the coffee machine blew up. Would you mind rerouting the beam once more?"
(s/degrees/the simple circled degree character that/. is munging for some reason/g)
Somewhat related to this, the biggest german women's magazine announced a couple days ago that they will no longer hire professional models because they are too thin: Article at The Guardian. Money quote: "For years we've had to use Photoshop to fatten the girls up. Especially their thighs, and decolletage. But this is disturbing and perverse and what has it got to do with our real reader?"
Some animals seem to have "Extra Sensory Perception" (the cat Oscar, for example, seems to be able to predict the impending death of terminally ill patients (Oscar_(cat))), although I am more inclined to the opinion that these animals are paying attention to (for them) quite obvious things which we just have not identified yet.
that I will finally be able to take a picture of a woman, talking on the phone to a friend, having her mouth _shut_? (provided that I dim the lights so the flash will do its work) Will 80 attoseconds be enough for this?
Wow, that was still a really stupid patch. There was an #ifndef PURIFY there for a reason. It's because the openssl authors knew that line would cause trouble in a memory debuger like Purify or Valgrind. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Rational_Purify
Actually, Kurt did ask on openssl-dev whether this change is acceptable, and did not get any answer that this would be a no-no (his mail and subsequent answers can be seen here).
Nah - they step into the bedroom and shout 'fork!'.
Very Cool. Should give you some bonus points on your geek card :-)

Argh, /. ... That was supposed to say 'about 1 m^2 in diameter'!

So he's related to Joerg Schilling?

Looks good to me...

Especially as there are way enough other meanings for SMB. "Self Mating Beam", for example, should be good for some more MS-related jokes...
Both MS (http://www.cebit.de/suche/popup/kurzliste.html?vst_jahr=2008&vst_nummer=007&sprache=1&session=1&halle=004) and Sun (http://www.cebit.de/suche/popup/kurzliste.html?vst_jahr=2008&vst_nummer=007&sprache=1&session=1&halle=002) did attend this year's show.
