My suggestion has always been that elitists can move to *BSD if they think linux has become too popular. And if BSD becomes too popular.. then they can move to BeOS and so on.
No need for them to ruin an OS that is becoming popular with a "holier than thou" attitude.
Enough with the meme crap! You are just going to frighten people away from your cause if you keep ranting about meme this meme that. They will think you are part of some wacko religious cult.
THe abuse of statistics is hardly a new concept, and doesn't need any 'memist' explanation.
The issue is really about what is the function of a library: to give any information about anything, or to only give information on selected topics. It is also about certain people forcing their morals on everyone else. Is the United States a Christian Theocracy or a Democracy?
Newsgroups failed because there is no moderation. Your discussions of your favorite topic can easily be drowned out by spammers, flamers, and other assorted idiots.
It seems as soon as any discussion moves beyond "a few friends and I" it always degenerates into a form that requires moderation... thus the rise in easy-to-moderate web bulletin board type systems and moderated mailing lists.
The most difficult part of the new moderated discussion world is to find moderators who don't abuse their powers.
Keep in mind that the EFF is just a front for the US Libertarian Party... To me, this seems a bit unfair. We need a non-partisan organization to help computer-related causes. I'd like to help this guy out, but I'm certainly not going to do it through the EFF.
Just a note to those who might mistakenly think HackerNews.com is a source of unbiased news - it is run by a bunch of Objectivists.
Of course the other choices aren't that great either-- AntiOnline (haha, yeah right..) or Rootshell (completely out of date). Bugtraq is good but it mostly focuses on bugs not hackers.
Too bad there isn't a site that reports on the biases of the different internet news sources (and I don't just mean computer-news sites).
Civ: CTP is -far- better, IMO. I've been playing CTP for months, while Alpha Centauri didn't even last a week.
Maybe Loki will do some improvements to Alpha Centauri (hopefully in the area of graphics and sound) to make it more enjoyable. Then maybe I could trade my Windows version in for the Linux version:-)
Wow, I didn't realize we had nazis on slashdot. I thought people here were more intelligent than that. Check out the URL this guy has listed under his name.
The whole point of slashdot is to put up links to real articles and make idiotic editorial comments on them! And, if you don't agree with the slashdot mob, you get moderated out of sight.
I *gasp* DON'T want my bank to give away source code to their software either!... and I know this violates the GPL propaganda line. Tough. The fact is security through obscurity WORKS, otherwise what would be the point of SSH or/etc/shadow??
The fact is that wireless communication has become a commodity item, and as a result some of the reason people take up amateur radio in the first place has disappeared. Why after all, would someone engage in something that requires expensive equipment and a special license when they can go out to the local electronics store and pick up a pair of FRS radios for under $150? Or suffer through static crashes and the ins and outs of HF propogation when they can grab a cell phone and dial any phone on the face of the planet?
Because it is fun, I imagine. Personally, I've just gotten into radio the last few months and find it very interesting. As long as there are geeks, there will be amateur radio.:)

As for incorporating the movie ending into the show, I don't think that would be fair to people who hadn't seen the movie.
And what if we aren't rich enough to have any stock??

Thanks.
So the creator of the operating system is also a "dumb customer?"

It's not for everyone.. Different people have different tastes. Personally, I prefer Gibson over Stephenson!
I will make a bot that pretends to be you. It's nick will be 'Arrogance' -- shouldn't be too difficult.
WMP is a lot more stable than RealPlayer too. Real has some catching up to do!

The cookie file isn't updated until you quit Netscape. Quit Netscape and then look at the cookie file.

Hmm. Is this "News for Nerds" or "Comittee to Elect John McCane?" Just wondering...

A shame they don't have similar reporting on MILITARY wastes!!

It's sure a lot faster than Mozilla. This is important to those of us who can't afford to buy a new computer every six months :-)
So what law did they break? I don't understand this.. It is illegal to make small microphones?? ??? Guess I better throw away my tape recorder!
How about a satellite that electrocutes people who tailgate.
There is that other comic they print in Linux Journal (not the UF one) that is MUCH funnier than UF...
For the same reason you don't want a car that only gets 5 miles per gallon.
slowly forgetting? I don't think so-- American society has always thrived on ignorance...
